I tried reproducing the problem but fop-1.0 seems to raise an exception:

this is an outofmemory issue so what does not work in one machine may work in
some other. you only see the issue if your machine runs out of memory in

(1) luis is correct that embedding is performed by default without the
referenced-fonts element;
(2) in particular, when i add referenced-fontsmatch
font-family=SimSun//referenced-fonts i see the same behavior: glyphs
