thanks for you answers, that's what I gathered from the cvs history as well :-)
the app I'm working with needs a fairly recent fop version due to some
obscure batik integration (?), so I'm now looking at a creative way
of embedding two fop versions in the same webapp

That feature is currently not fully supported in CVS HEAD. It will take
another one or two months until this works. CVS HEAD is work in progress,
so use it at your own risk. If you need multi-column support, please use
FOP 0.20.5 for now.
