PDF format becomes ISO standard (ISO 32000-1)

2008-07-02 Thread The Web Maestro
Greetings FOP Folks,

I thought I'd let you know (in case you didn't already 'hear') that
the ISO has a new standard[1]:

ISO 32000-1, Document management – Portable document format – Part 1: PDF 1.7

Here're some choice pieces from the article...

The Portable Document Format (PDF), undeniably one of the most
commonly used formats for electronic documents, is now accessible as
an ISO International Standard - ISO 32000-1. This move follows a
decision by Adobe Systems Incorporated, original developer and
copyright owner of the format, to relinquish control to ISO, who is
now in charge of publishing the specifications for the current version
(1.7) and for updating and developing future versions.

"By releasing the full PDF specification for ISO standardization, we
are reinforcing our commitment to openness", says Kevin Lynch, Chief
Technology Officer at Adobe. "As governments and organizations
increasingly request open formats, maintenance of the PDF
specification by an external and participatory organization will help
continue to drive innovation and expand the rich PDF ecosystem that
has evolved over the past 15 years."

...

The new standard, ISO 32000-1, Document management – Portable document
format – Part 1: PDF 1.7, is based on the PDF version 1.7 developed by
Adobe. This International Standard supplies the essential information
needed by developers of software that create PDF files (conforming
writers), software that reads existing PDF files and interprets their
contents for display and interaction (conforming readers), and PDF
products that read and/or write PDF files for a variety of other
purposes (conforming products).

Enjoy!

Which FOP version are you using?

The embedded file URL ist malformed, maybe the recursive URL resolver

It depends. If is a real XML node (i.e. not ),
then the solution could be as simple as adding a matching template

Hi,

I need to be able to parse a block of text that may contain the html
superscript tags and convert this into FOP superscripts. I haven't a clue
how to do this and was hoping some experts out there may offer some help.

Basically I will have an xml file like this:

My xslt translation file has the following:

Will I have to reformat how the xml file is generated to enable me to
process the tags? eg.

   the quick brown fox
   2
jumped over the lazy dog

thanks in advance for any help.

Will not create "Test1 Test2" but "Test1Test2", so if you do want a

RE: Inline blocks in fop 0.94 (not block with inlines)

2008-07-02 Thread Griffin,Sean
It's not the spaces *between* inlines where you want the non-breaking spaces,
it's the spaces *within* the inline. What you want to say is that this inline
is an entire string of non-breaking characters, and since hyphentation is not
set on the parent , it shouldn't be hyphenating those strings either.
Given this setup, FOP will only find break opportunities between the inlines,
which is exactly what you want.

Embedding fonts

2008-07-02 Thread Thomas S.

Hi,

I have a problem with embedding fonts while running Apache FOP within a
web application. This seems to be caused by a problem with reading the
font metrics from a jar file.

Obviously FOP can read the configuration from the jar, it also doesn't
complain while starting:

Also embedding images from the same jar isn't a problem, but using the

Running FOP having the font metrics as a normal file works perfectly,
but for productive usage this isn't very helpful.

I would be very grateful, if someone has an idea to get this working!

Kind regards,
Thomas

RE: Inline blocks in fop 0.94 (not block with inlines)

2008-07-02 Thread Griffin,Sean
I haven't tried this, but I still think using non-breaking spaces is the way to
go. So if you did this:

Today is a beautiful day 1
Today is a beautiful day 2
Today is a beautiful day 3

And "Today is a beautiful day 1 Today is a beautiful day 2" fit on the line but
"Today is a beautiful day 3" did not, then you'd get:

"Today is a beautiful day 1 Today is a beautiful day 2
Today is a beautiful day 3"

My method of inserting space characters between the inlines probably won't work
exactly as I have it, and you'll have to translate/replace the space characters
from your input into non-breaking-space characters, but it seems like it could
work...

Thanks Griffin,Sean for your answer but i think that my problem is more
complicated
I'll give you a better example

I have this text* in an inline. ---> *"Today is a beautiful day #"
ok;;

SO,

Today is a beautiful day 1Today is a
beautiful day 2Today is a beautiful day 3 .
Line width is an unknown parameter and i want text "Today is a beautiful
day #" always together in the same line...
If my line has space only for
Today is a beautiful day 1, Today is a beautiful day 2, Today is a
beautiful
day 3

I don't want this but this

Today is a beautiful day 1, Today is a beautiful day 2,
Today is a beautiful day 3

Do you understand me ;;; thanks a lot...

RE: Inline blocks in fop 0.94 (not block with inlines)

2008-07-02 Thread Griffin,Sean
I'm not exactly sure I follow the question, but I think (hope) I understand it
well enough to answer. The example you gave seems a bit off, though, as I
don't see how the word "Test3" would ever break in the middle. The only break
opportunity in the "Test3 Test3" inline would be at the space between the first
"Test3" and second "Test3". If you truly don't want spaces within inlines to
be treated as break opportunities, it seems a possible solution would be to
replace all space characters ( ) with non-breaking space characters
( ).

Also...

Test1
Test2

Will not create "Test1 Test2" but "Test1Test2", so if you do want a break
opportunity between those inlines, you'll need to insert them manually.

RE: Forward references in marker element throws NPE

2008-07-02 Thread Browning, Jamie
Andreas

Thanks again for your clear response.

If there is any way in which I can positively influence the decision to
include this patch then I would like to do so.

I am currently employed in a financial services (Insurance) company in
the UK, where we are undertaking an upgrade of our use of FOP from
version 0.20.5 to 0.94 (or 0.95 depending on likely release date).
Unfortunately this bug is a real show-stopper as we have to preserve
existing documents. In the Insurance industry it is vital to be able to
vary elements (in this case document footers) based on the
content/position of the page within the document. In many cases there is
a legal requirement for certain company details to appear on certain
pages.

The way we are currently doing this is through the use of the
element. Unfortunately in most cases the document footer must also
contain pagination details (e.g. Page 1 of 10) and it is this feature
that has regressed in 0.94/5.

I am sure that there is alternative way to achieve this and for new
documents that is no problem. Refactoring existing documents is much
more of a pain and more time-consuming (cost).

I guess I could commit it to the release branch as well, but I would
rather see confirmation from other devs first.

No problem for me to apply this fix to 0.95 (after all, it's only a
very small patch), but if someone's already preparing the release,
I'd rather not get in their way...

Anyone?
