I don't think Ubuntu is responsible for heatup. It can be various reasons.
I also occasionally run into same problem. I have a laptop with hybrid
graphics, and for instance, video call with skype gives me a lot of problem
taking 100% CPU often. So it seems it is my ATI graphics driver issue.
First
I switched to Unity 2D and disabled OpenGl on Cairo dock. Now it's doing
okay. Thanks.

I installed ubuntu 12.04 yesterday and it seems the cpu is at full throttle
most of the times. And it freakin heats up all the time. The fan is roaring
