Doesnt Ubuntu detect the drive automatically?? It is working fine in my system. Check the result of: sudo fdisk -l and try to find if it is detected by the system or not. Generally sda would be your first drive, and if detected sdb would be your second. (In general cases, it may differ) On

I don't think Ubuntu is responsible for heatup. It can be various reasons. I also occasionally run into same problem. I have a laptop with hybrid graphics, and for instance, video call with skype gives me a lot of problem taking 100% CPU often. So it seems it is my ATI graphics driver issue. First
