This is great, and something I'd like to see more of, given what travel does to our environment. What can we do to make sure you feel enabled to participate? Assuming you'll be in Vancouver, -9 hours from Belgium, this is going to be quite a sacrifice for you. We usually get started between 09:00 and 10:00, so midnight to sunrise for you. Alternatively, if we're good about having work items on a public board, you could work on things while we sleep, in true F/OSS fashion. So I guess that brings me back to my question, what can we do? * Remote video? (assuming participants are comfortable with that) * More IRC conversations, or dedicated stenographer? * Etherpad for notes/conversations? I think one thing that would help is for remote participants to prepare a list of topics they'd like to ensure are discussed, since we usually start by white-boarding topics for the 3-day session. Affiliation change and stepping down
Friends, It is with both a sad heart and great excitement for the future that I'm notifying you of my decision to step down from the GNOME Board of Directors. As of Oct 5th, I will be a RedHat employee. There are already two wonderful board members who are also employed at RedHat (our limit according to the bylaws). The board was notified a couple of weeks ago and is in the process of replacing my seat. Please bare with them while they figure out the details. This board, like many before them, are deeply passionate and I have no doubt they will succeed without me. I look forward to serving you on a future board! -- Christian ___ foundation-list mailing list foundation-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/foundation-list

Re: More questions for Board candidates
Hi, On 05/21/2015 02:25 PM, Karen Sandler wrote: I have a few questions for the candidates too. I agree with what has been said by Jeff and Josh that it's important that people on the board have a diverse skillset, so I wouldn't expect all board members to answer yes on these, but I think it's good to know if at least a few people on the board have some background in these areas... Have you ever done any fundraising? Yes. I've been a technical resource during both fund-raising and acquisition stages of multiple start-ups. I've also done deep dives with potential investors. Determining what technology to focus on can be crucial to fund-raising. I do not have experience sourcing new income (with the exception of the Builder crowd-funding), however this is something I'm increasingly interested in. Are you comfortable asking sponsors for money? I am. I'm comfortable discovering the reasons it is in their best interest to do so. It's not always obvious how important our stack is to various current and potential sponsors. Have you ever been in a manager role? I have not, other than my time as a maintainer of various projects. While these are different roles, encouragement and fostering growth are key to the success of either. Do you have any experience talking to reporters? To a degree. My experience has been with ensuring they have the information necessary to write articles and less about press releases. Have you ever talked to a group of people about why software freedom is important? I regularly take part in both Free and Open Source software outreach in the San Francisco area. I've spoken to small (a couple people) and large (100+ people) and am comfortable with both. If that sort of thing would mean more work but ultimately lower fees, then perhaps GNOME could also take an administrative cut off the top for managing the donations on behalf of the relevant project developers? It might also be worthwhile for us to set up a dedicated wiki page guide explaining what alternative fundraising platforms GNOME want projects to use and compile a list of links on there and have some recommendations for standard practices. It might also be handy for those wishing to fund their projects if we compiled and outline the logical steps a project manager and/or project developer might take to get set up and seek permission and support with launch etc. If crowdfunding was a service that the GNOME foundation offered it's members, I would be in favor of that. However, as it stands today, I believe this would cause undue burden on the board. Additionally, I'm against a policy on external links based on their JavaScript, full stop. Didn't I tell you this at the time? Since then, I have come across one site, crowdsupply.com, which offers a way to send money bypassing the nonfree JS code. That makes it better than the others. I urge people to choose crowdsupply.com for future campaigns. The problem is that it takes *months* to prepare a proper crowdfunding campaign. So if you didn't suggest crowdsupply to me back at the hackfest, it was simply *too late* to be reasonably actionable (despite that I might agree it would be a good idea).
