You're missing the InDesign property that aligns a stroke's weight from its
center, or inside/outside, if it is a shape's border. Probably other
graphic applications have the same abilities.
Keep in mind that FM evolved around the time when the use of thin lead
strips to separate lines of metal

If Frame handles lines like most other tools do, the line object you draw has 0
width. Then when you add width to the line, 1/2 of that width gets added to all
"sides" of the line, including the ends. In other words, the line takes on an
"end cap" that is as thick as 1/2 of the line width
