I suggest dropping all the building blocks tied to chapter file
breaks. It eliminates a source of potential errors. I just put
everything in one .fm file.

The autonumber format for my chapters is:

The autonumber format for my chapters is:
N:Chapter\ $chapnum:
I want to number my chapters alphabetically, so I set the chapter
numbering properties in my book to Fomat: Alphabetic (N). This works
One thing to watch for is that all styles that use this numbering stream have
the exact same number of placeholders. Otherwise you may encounter numbering
discrepancies.
The instance you show makes me a bit nervous since the $chapnum variable is
in second position.

restart my chapter numbering (Chapter #: 1). When I select "Continue
tever it happens to be.
