2010-03-05 Thread Shlomo Perets
One-hour webinars (free), starting 10am PDT:

* Multimedia Assistant, March 11
Learn how you can embed/link to audio or video files (filmed or software
demos) from PDFs created in FM, without the tedious work of inserting the
link/file and defining playback properties every time the PDF is updated.
With Multimedia Assistant, you use hypertext markers to define access
(embed or link) to local/web-based multimedia files in all formats
supported by Acrobat/Reader, so that the defined features are automatically
present in the PDF file.

Hi Adam,

Do you need to be able to use this numbering in generated files (TOC,

etc.) and/or cross-references? Or does it just need to appear this way
on the page? Thanks.

Subject: Customizing page numbering

Hi All,

We have some documents which need to have pages numbered in the
following way:
n / (n + 1)
where n is the page number. (IE. on page 33, it needs to say 33/34).

Inserting a variable defined as $curpagenum gives page n - but I
cannot figure out a way to insert n + 1 (ie. $curpagenum + 1 does not
give the result I hoped for..)

How would I go about doing this?

Re: Slightly OT: optimal PC for TCS2 / CS3 use

A semiconductor drive (RAM vs magnetic disk) will turbocharge the system
at about the same price as the TB drive.
You may not have room for files that should have been archived long ago -

Optimal will be a Core-duo 2.66MHz or 3 and above.
If you are running Win 7 which you should rather than Vista, try to go
for 64-bit. 32-bit will work fine. Max your RAM 4 GB would be good,
though with 64-bit you could actually use more. And a humongous hard
drive. Look for 1 TB as a good working arrangement.

Relative Path Problem for Linked Graphics

2010-03-05 Thread Alison Craig
Version: FM9 (9.0p237)
Unstructured
OS: XP Pro with SP3

I received a set of Spanish files back from my LSP today and as I was making
some adjustments within the files (I do the final format tweaking as DTP
charges are outrageous) it became obvious that they had completely screwed up
my graphics - which I import by reference. As the LSP is in Europe I am hoping
there is a simple batch method to change the relative path for my all graphics
rather than have to re-link by hand or wait for a set of corrected files.

The path is only out by one level.

The FM files sit directly above my Graphics (Linked) directory (which is
further categorized by Chapters, Appendices, etc.). However, there is now
another directory above Graphics (Linked) entitled FM

...\FM\Graphics (Linked)...

instead of

...\Graphics (Linked)\...

Is there a simple way I can get rid of the FM in the relative path (I don't
have FrameScript) or am I screwed and need to wait for updated files from my
LSP?

Alison

FYI: This isn't a mistake the LSP normally makes. I have no idea what they were
playing at but I'll be having words with them!

FM9 Crash: Internal Error Message

2010-03-05 Thread Josie . Cooley

Frame Experts:
I enjoy reading and learning from the Frame List Serve and hope someone out
there can help me.

I am using FM9.0p250 in a Windows XP environment. The book I (am trying to)
create is a pdf document.

For the past three days (working in the same book), Framemaker has crashed
and I have received the following error message:
Internal Error 9004, 7888662, 5205995, 5205700. Framemaker has detected a
serious problem and must quit.
Then, an error log is generated as a txt file.
As requested by the kind crash message, I submitted the txt files and the
Frame files to fmer...@adobe,com but, not surprisingly, have not heard
anything from Adobe.
There does seem to be a pattern to the crazy crash since it happens in the
same file every time while I am attempting to properly number a series of
Figures and Tables( N:TABLE $volnum-n ... which has been another
headache itself, but that's another story...)

Could it be a corrupt file? Can anyone interpret the internal error codes
or give me some place to look for help?
Thanks!

Probably. But I suspect that's not your real question. :-)

I take it you've seen that message. And that you have FM 8 and some
version of WebWorks ePublisher Pro. And that you're running some 64-bit
Windows OS. (It always helps to describe the environment in which you
experienced the problem and the version of FM and other involved
software.)

So, under what circumstances did you see this message? What had changed
since the last time you did the same thing without seeing that message?
(It always helps to actually describe the issue you're having.)

Did you check the path specified in the message? Was
FrameMaker8.Client.dll there?

If not, is WebWorks in the Add and Remove Programs list? If so, does it
have a repair option? If not, have you tried reinstalling it?

RE: FM9 Crash: Internal Error Message

2010-03-05 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
First off - how are you trying to create a PDF? Printing to the Adobe PDF
printer instance (rec. method) or Save As PDF (reportedly flakey)?
Do you have the Adobe PDF printer set as the default in FM (using the SetPrint
plug-in)?
Did it ever work before on this doc? Have you tried Art Campbell's MIF-wash
technique (save .fm as .mif, open .mif, save back as .fm) to fight corruption.
Could you be subject to the MS Hotfix for PDF creation? See the Adobe.com
developer blogs for info on the fix.

RE: Relative Path Problem for Linked Graphics

2010-03-05 Thread Owen, Clint
Alison,

If I understand your situation correctly, all you need to do is use the
Open All Files in Book commend from the File Menu (Shift + Open). When
you receive the Can't find the Graphic dialog, just navigate to the
new graphic directory and click on the correct file. Make sure that
update to New Path is checked, then hit OK. FM should automatically
find all of the remaining graphics in the new directory. Then just Save
ALL.

Clint:

That worked for Chapter 1 where all two of the images are in the same folder.
But all the other chapters and appendices - which are graphics-rich - have the
images stored in multiple folders below Graphics (Linked) so this doesn't
work for them.

ALL.

HTH,

Clint

I received a set of Spanish files back from my LSP today and as I was
making some adjustments within the files (I do the final format tweaking
as DTP charges are outrageous) it became obvious that they had
completely screwed up my graphics - which I import by reference. As the
LSP is in Europe I am hoping there is a simple batch method to change
the relative path for my all graphics rather than have to re-link by
hand or wait for a set of corrected files.

The path is only out by one level.

The FM files sit directly above my Graphics (Linked) directory (which
is further categorized by Chapters, Appendices, etc.). However, there is
now another directory above Graphics (Linked) entitled FM

...\FM\Graphics (Linked)...

instead of

...\Graphics (Linked)\...

Is there a simple way I can get rid of the FM in the relative path (I
don't have FrameScript) or am I screwed and need to wait for updated
files from my LSP?

FYI: This isn't a mistake the LSP normally makes. I have no idea what
they were playing at but I'll be having words with them!

RE: Relative Path Problem for Linked Graphics

2010-03-05 Thread Alison Craig

Unfortunately not, Clint. This is something that will be used over and over and
I need to the LSP to stay on the same page as I am.

If they can't give me the correct files by 9am Monday (my time), I have a
solution to implement. In the meantime, I'll work on tweaking the format of the
Visio files.

2010-03-05 Thread Lief Erickson
There's a plug-in out there that will solve this problem quite quickly. It's
called XtraBookUtils. It will scan your document, spit out the paths to your
files, then you can use Search/Replace to change the paths, then apply the
changes. I've used it many times and it's saved me hours of effort.

Thanks for the phone call and the FrameScript solution.

I've checked with my boss and if my LSP can't deliver me the fixed files by 9am

Hi All,

We have some documents which need to have pages numbered in the
following way:
n / (n + 1)
where n is the page number. (IE. on page 33, it needs to say 33/34).

Inserting a variable defined as <$curpagenum> gives page n - but I
cannot figure out a way to insert n + 1 (ie. <$curpagenum + 1> does not
give the result I hoped for..)

How would I go about doing this?

Slightly OT: optimal PC for TCS2 / CS3 use

The FM files sit directly above my "Graphics (Linked)" directory (which is
further categorized by Chapters, Appendices, etc.). However, there is now
another directory above "Graphics (Linked)" entitled "FM"

...\FM\Graphics (Linked)...

instead of

...\Graphics (Linked)\...

Is there a simple way I can get rid of the "FM" in the relative path (I don't
have FrameScript) or am I screwed and need to wait for updated files from my
LSP?

Alison

FYI: This isn't a mistake the LSP normally makes. I have no idea what they were
playing at but I'll be having words with them!

Cannot initialize API client error message

2010-03-05 Thread Jackie Connors
Hi there,

Has anyone seen such an error message?

"Cannot initialize API client c:\program files
(x86)adobe\framemaker8\fminit\plugins\WebWorks.FrameMaker8.Client.dll"

Thanks in advance

FM9 Crash: Internal Error Message

2010-03-05 Thread josie.coo...@aphis.usda.gov

Frame Experts:
I enjoy reading and learning from the Frame List Serve and hope someone out
there can help me.

I am using FM9.0p250 in a Windows XP environment. The book I (am trying to)
create is a pdf document.

For the past three days (working in the same book), Framemaker has crashed
and I have received the following error message:
"Internal Error 9004, 7888662, 5205995, 5205700. Framemaker has detected a
serious problem and must quit."
Then, an error log is generated as a txt file.
As requested by the kind crash message, I submitted the txt files and the
Frame files to but, not surprisingly, have not heard
anything from Adobe.
There does seem to be a pattern to the crazy crash since it happens in the
same file every time while I am attempting to properly number a series of
Figures and Tables( N:TABLE <$volnum>- ... which has been another
headache itself, but that's another story...)

FM9 Crash: Internal Error Message

Relative Path Problem for Linked Graphics

2010-03-05 Thread Owen, Clint
Alison,

If I understand your situation correctly, all you need to do is use the
"Open All Files in Book" commend from the File Menu (Shift + Open). When
you receive the "Can't find the Graphic" dialog, just navigate to the
new graphic directory and click on the correct file. Make sure that
"update to New Path" is checked, then hit OK. FM should automatically
find all of the remaining graphics in the new directory. Then just "Save
ALL".

as DTP charges are outrageous) it became obvious that they had
completely screwed up my graphics - which I import by reference. As the
LSP is in Europe I am hoping there is a simple batch method to change
the relative path for my all graphics rather than have to re-link by
hand or wait for a set of corrected files.

The path is only out by one level.

The FM files sit directly above my "Graphics (Linked)" directory (which
is further categorized by Chapters, Appendices, etc.). However, there is
now another directory above "Graphics (Linked)" entitled "FM"

...\FM\Graphics (Linked)...

instead of

...\Graphics (Linked)\...

Is there a simple way I can get rid of the "FM" in the relative path (I
don't have FrameScript) or am I screwed and need to wait for updated
files from my LSP?

Alison

FYI: This isn't a mistake the LSP normally makes. I have no idea what
they were playing at but I'll be having words with them!

Relative Path Problem for Linked Graphics

2010-03-05 Thread Alison Craig

Unfortunately not, Clint. This is something that will be used over and over and
I need to the LSP to stay on the same page as I am.

If they can't give me the correct files by 9am Monday (my time), I have a
solution to implement. In the meantime, I'll work on tweaking the format of the
Visio files.

Thanks again.

Alison,

I was afraid that might be the case. Is there any chance that you could
just put all the graphics in the same folder, maybe just for this book?

Clint:

That worked for Chapter 1 where all two of the images are in the same
folder. But all the other chapters and appendices - which are
graphics-rich - have the images stored in multiple folders below
"Graphics (Linked)" so this doesn't work for them.

Thanks, Alison

ALL".

HTH,

Clint

What about saving the files as MIF & using a find/replace tool to comb

Relative Path Problem for Linked Graphics

2010-03-05 Thread Lief Erickson
There's a plug-in out there that will solve this problem quite quickly. It's
called XtraBookUtils. It will scan your document, spit out the paths to your
files, then you can use Search/Replace to change the paths, then apply the
changes. I've used it many times and it's saved me hours of effort.

Relative Path Problem for Linked Graphics - SOLUTION

2010-03-05 Thread Alison Craig
Rick:

Thanks for the phone call and the FrameScript solution.

I've checked with my boss and if my LSP can't deliver me the fixed files by 9am
Monday (PST), I'm going to tell them I'll take the cost of your solution off
their invoice (which was delivered minutes after the files were!) as well as an
additional charge for my time.

So, you may hear from me Monday morning with a credit card number, ready to do
business.
