Spanned figures in multi-column layouts

2006-12-07 Thread Steve Rickaby
I am struggling to find a way to make an anchored frame span more than one
column of a multi-column layout. If I set the frame uncropped, it messes with
the text flow (the text threads to adjacent columns above the figure, which is
not what I want), and if I set it cropped, half of it disappears behind the
adjacent column of text. If I create a paragraph for the anchor that has
'across all columns' set, I get the same effect as setting the frame uncropped.

I suspect it might be something to do with the runaround properties of the
frame, but I seem to remember that this can only be accessed using Dark Magic.
Can anyone suggest a solution? What I want to achieve is for a figure to span
more than one column, but for the text threading to be unaffected by the
presence of the figure.

TWO BUILDS ON THE SAME MACHINE

2006-12-07 Thread Michael Zaichenko

Hello all,
here is a technical question. I have to install 2 builds of the same
FrameMaker version on one machine. Is that physically possible. I have dlls
that are written for 7.1p023 and I can't rewrite them for an update, however
my main powerhorse is 7.1p116. I need both to operate comfortably.

I'm on XP.
Any ideas?
Michael

Re: Spanned figures in multi-column layouts

2006-12-07 Thread Art Campbell

Try setting:
* Your Anchor para tag pagination to across all columns.
* The Body (or whatever) tags just above the Anchor tag to Keep With
Previous para. This should prevent them from jumping into the next
column.

Links to web work from FM, but not from PDF

2006-12-07 Thread Linda G. Gallagher
Framers,

FM 7.0
Acrobat Pro 6.0

I've used links to web sites before, but for some reason some that I just
created work fine from my FrameMaker file, but don't work from a PDF.

Here are the things I checked or tried:

- Hypertext markers look fine and I've applied a character tag to denote the
link area.

- Ctrl + Alt + Click from FM works fine. My browser goes to the correct URL.

- Generate PDF data is turned on when printing to ps file.

- Links in the PDF change the cursor to the hand with the w, but nothing
happens when you click them.

Any ideas? My project is due tomorrow. :o

RE: Acrobat Pro 8.0 and FM 7.2

2006-12-07 Thread Ridder, Fred
Usually you want to have Acrobat installed before you install
FrameMaker in order to get Save As PDF (a feature I personally
prefer not to use, ever) to work.

But one other thing to check is whether your computer has a
port defined with the name FILE: (all caps and with the colon).
For some strange reason, the Acrobat install occasionally
clobbers that port and without it the Save As PDF feature
doesn't work.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Re: Need Programming Algorithm

2006-12-07 Thread David Taylor

It's not pseudocode, but try these changes to Simon's algorithm.

Make each list the same length (the maximum number of values for a
property) and fill the unneeded indexes in each list with some unique
marker. Test for the marker in each loop. When you find it, drop
out of the current loop and all lower loops. (To skip the lower
loops, set a flag when you find the marker and have each loop drop
out without doing anything if the flag is set. Clear the flag each
time the first loop starts.)

Hi Simon,

You are right, except if one or more of the lists is empty, it
short-circuits everything.

Rick

Hi Rick.

Unless I greatly misunderstand you, I believe you just need a series of
nested loops, driven by a series of string lists.

The rough algorithm is:

New StringList NewVar(vlFirst);
// Go through the first row of the table and add members to the
stringlist.
New StringList NewVar(vlSecond);
// Go through the next row of the table and add members to the
stringlist.
New StringList NewVar(vlThird);
// Go through the next row of the table and add members to the
stringlist.

// (If you don't know how many rows you'll have, you could assemble them
in an EVector object.)

// Now use nested loops:

Loop While(vFirstIndex = vlFirst.count) LoopVar(vFirstIndex) InitVal(1)
Incr(1)
  Set vFirstText = vlFirst[vFirstIndex];

  Loop While(vSecondIndex = vlSecond.count) LoopVar(vSecondIndex)
InitVal(1) Incr(1)
 Set vSecondText = vlSecond[vSecondIndex];

 write console vFirstText + ' ' + vSecondText + ' ' + vThirdText +
' ';

 Loop While(vThirdIndex = vlThird.count) LoopVar(vThirdIndex)
InitVal(1) Incr(1)
Set vThirdText = vlThird[vThirdIndex];

 EndLoop
  EndLoop
EndLoop

RE: Links to web work from FM, but not from PDF - partial solution

2006-12-07 Thread Linda G. Gallagher
The links all look right when the tooltip pops up. I checked that the Create
Named Destinations option was turned on (thanks, Tammy), and it was. I tried
rebooting, too, (thanks Fred). Still no joy. If my browser is closed, it
now opens IE (which is not my default browser), but doesn't go to the page
in the link. It just opens to my default home page. If I leave IE open, the
links to nothing.

I'm still not exactly sure what's happening, but Rick Quatro wins the prize
(just try to collect, Rick ;). He suggested opening the PDF from my browser
(Firefox, in this case), then trying the links. Lo and behold, they work
fine when I open the PDF from Firefox.

It seems like there's something else between my Acrobat and browser that's
not making them work. My firewall is not popping up anything, so I don't
think it's that. Of course, the proof of the pudding will be whether they
work for my client, and I haven't heard on that yet. Crossing my fingers
that they do, or I'll be back.

RE: Acrobat Pro 8.0 and FM 7.2

2006-12-07 Thread Dov Isaacs
In reality, it should not make any difference what order you
install Acrobat and FrameMaker with one caveat. If you are
installing the full Acrobat product (which you are), you must
NOT install the copy of Distiller bundled with FrameMaker.
If you have already installed that bundled Distiller, you
must totally uninstall it (and any other versions of Acrobat
and/or Reader on your system) prior to installing Acrobat 8.
If you are prompted to reboot your system after any uninstalls
or after installing Acrobat 8, be sure to do so. The installation
process depends on your doing that reboot immediately.

Although this has not been a problem in recent versions of
Acrobat, per the suggestion of another poster, you should make
sure that the FILE: port is not missing from your system.

To further complicate things, Acrobat 8 changed the location where
.joboptions files are stored. Acrobat 7 stored the .joboptions files
at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Adobe PDF\Settings.
That is where FrameMaker looks for them. Acrobat 8 (actually
Distiller 8) stores the bundled .joboptions files in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe
PDF\Settings
and each user's personalized .joboption files in
C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe
PDF\Settings
where is your Windows user id.
For FrameMaker 7.2 to work directly with Distiller 8 with the
save as feature, you must make sure that FrameMaker 7.2 sees
all your joboptions in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Adobe PDF\Settings.

Hi everyone, hope you are relaxing during the holiday season. Yeah right!

Anyway, I have a queston, it's about something I do NOT remember ever seeing
in my long experience with FrameMaker, but who knows I may have forgotten.

My ChapterTitle, Heading 1TOC, Heading2TOC, all have a right aligned tab at
6.0" - the font is ITC Gothic Book 12 pt, and 10pt. I'm using
FrameMaker 7.2- what's happening is the page numbers along the right
are ever so slightly
wavering back and forth. No clear cut line of numbers.

It's not a big difference but enough to make the eyes go crazy. Do you
remember, know a fix for this? I tried applying a character tag "Page
numberTOC" set at Arial, 10pt for all paragraphs starting with the tab
character and ending with the page number. But still get the wave.

Any help is appreciated, sorry to hear that the list was having problems
with bots and other obnoxious net-folk, hope the web site is back online
soon.

TIA for any help you can offer

Need Programming Algorithm

2006-12-07 Thread Rick Quatro
Hello All,

I have an interesting FrameMaker programming problem that I am having
trouble solving. I have a PDF that will help explain the problem at

http://www.frameexpert.com/SettingsGrid.pdf

Each row in the table represents a property setting (font size, leading,
etc.), while each cell in the row represents a specific value for that
property. Each property row can have zero or more values.

I need to assemble a list of all possible property/value combinations, as in
the lists below the table. I assembled this list "by hand." I am look for a
programming algorithm to assemble these combinations programmatically. I
will be using FrameScript, but I really just need a reliable algorithm which
I can translate into FrameScript myself. Each row could be represented by a
list, for example, (a,b), (1,2,3), (x,y,z), (i,ii), etc.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I'm on XP.
Any ideas?

Spanned figures in multi-column layouts

2006-12-07 Thread Art Campbell
Try setting:
 * Your Anchor para tag pagination to "across all columns."
 * The Body (or whatever) tags just above the Anchor tag to "Keep With
Previous" para. This should prevent them from jumping into the next
column.

Need Programming Algorithm

2006-12-07 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Simon,

You are right, except if one or more of the lists is empty, it
short-circuits everything.

Rick

Hi Rick.

Unless I greatly misunderstand you, I believe you just need a series of
nested loops, driven by a series of string lists.

The rough algorithm is:

New StringList NewVar(vlFirst);
// Go through the first row of the table and add members to the
stringlist.
New StringList NewVar(vlSecond);
// Go through the next row of the table and add members to the
stringlist.
New StringList NewVar(vlThird);
// Go through the next row of the table and add members to the
stringlist.

// (If you don't know how many rows you'll have, you could assemble them
in an EVector object.)

// Now use nested loops:

Loop While(vFirstIndex <= vlFirst.count) LoopVar(vFirstIndex) InitVal(1)
Incr(1)
   Set vFirstText = vlFirst[vFirstIndex];

   Loop While(vSecondIndex <= vlSecond.count) LoopVar(vSecondIndex)
InitVal(1) Incr(1)
  Set vSecondText = vlSecond[vSecondIndex];

  write console vFirstText + ' ' + vSecondText + ' ' + vThirdText +
' ';

  Loop While(vThirdIndex <= vlThird.count) LoopVar(vThirdIndex)
InitVal(1) Incr(1)
 Set vThirdText = vlThird[vThirdIndex];

  EndLoop
   EndLoop
EndLoop

Acrobat Pro 8.0 and FM 7.2

2006-12-07 Thread Susan Modlin
Hi, folks.

I've recently upgraded to FM 7.2 and Acrobat Pro 8 (in that order) and my Save
as PDF function has gone missing. The dialog box comes us and I choose all my
options, but nothing happens. No PDF, no nothing. I remember that there was a
right order in which to install, but I've forgotten what it is (and the
archives are next to impossible to search). Apologies if this has already been
beaten to death.

I'm running Windows XP Pro, SP2, and patched/updated FM to 7.2p158 after I
installed Acrobat. There are no other Acrobat versions on the machine.

Thanks.

Need Programming Algorithm

2006-12-07 Thread David Taylor
It's not pseudocode, but try these changes to Simon's algorithm.

Make each list the same length (the maximum number of values for a
property) and fill the unneeded indexes in each list with some unique
marker. Test for the marker in each loop. When you find it, drop
out of the current loop and all lower loops. (To skip the lower
loops, set a flag when you find the marker and have each loop drop
out without doing anything if the flag is set. Clear the flag each
time the first loop starts.)

Acrobat Pro 8.0 and FM 7.2

Acrobat 7 stored the .joboptions files
at "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Adobe PDF\Settings".
That is where FrameMaker looks for them. Acrobat 8 (actually
Distiller 8) stores the bundled .joboptions files in
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe
PDF\Settings"
and each user's personalized .joboption files in
"C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe
PDF\Settings"
where "" is your Windows user id.
For FrameMaker 7.2 to work directly with Distiller 8 with the
"save as" feature, you must make sure that FrameMaker 7.2 "sees"
all your joboptions in
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Adobe PDF\Settings".
