RE: Add Master Page of Different Size

2009-05-25 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Hi Nancy,

Sorry for the delay. This can be done using postscript code on your master
pages. Make your master pages the largest size you'll need (in this case 11 X
17) and then place a postscript textbox somewhere each master page to trim it
to the final size you want.

For 8.5 x 11 use:

[/CropBox [0 0 612 792 ]
/PAGE pdfmark

Best,

Take 2. Sorry for blank email.

Hi, everyone. How do I add a master page that is 11 x 17 in a document that is
otherwise 8.5 x 11?

If I add the master page and then use Format/Page Layout/Page Size, and change
the dimensions there, all the master pages are changed to the new size.

Thanks.

Frame 7.2 re-installation issue

2009-05-25 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
I reinstalled Frame 7.2, but I can't get it to open. When I try to open
Frame, the splash screen comes up and most it seems to load. But when it
gets to the Core the splash screen closes. I checked Windows Task
Manager and the FrameMaker.exe task is running when the splash screen is
open, but FrameMaker.exe disappears when the splash screen closes. I am
able to get Frame 7.0 to work, but not 7.2. I tried uninstalling all
FrameMaker versions and reinstalling, but it did not help.

The cause could be the numerous changes that I've made to my computer in
the last few years, including installing and uninstalling the trial
version of Acrobat 9, repartitioning my hard drive, etc.

Does anyone have an idea of how I could solve this? Thanks

I know framemaker 9 has been really buggy with keyboard shortcuts, but I
haven't seen anything about this issue. According to the FM 9 help system,
the keyboard shortcut to open the spell checker is: esc shift+f+i+s. I've
tried pressing the following on my keyboard: press the ESC button, then

RE: Procedure How to Write a Manual!

2009-05-25 Thread Andy Kass
I've enjoyed reading all the input on this thread, and I had a few more
thoughts.

Unfortunately, the way Reid writes it below, it looks like anyone can have the
writer role. I would've written:

4. Technical Writer who knows enough to understand the SME, learns about the
audience and its lingo, distills all the essentials out of these to make an
easy to absorb document, and knows the tools and formats well enough to do it
all quickly.

In any job, I think people need their core skills but also an understanding and
certain competency in the skills of those around them. To that extent, I'm sure
engineers can and do write decent docs sometimes, but they're probably more
efficient at their engineering tasks.

I'm pretty sure we all know this, but it is exactly this that is important to
communicate in the case of this pointy-haired boss. Nor does the boss seem to
understand how a good writer can save money and improve customer satisfaction.
To be a good writer, you also have to understand where management is coming
from...

BTW, I actually don't think it's productive for writers to use big words for
the sake of using big words. Writers must use whatever words speak to their
audience.

I think the list agrees that not just anybody can write a
good manual. And No, writers cannot be just anybody.
They must be committed, they need to love language, and
as Annie Dillard says ...you really need to like words...
 words such as 'transmogrify'

Or, if you will extend the metaphor to IT, endianess.

The best writing happens as a collective effort with the
writer at the center. So, for example, take manuals. To
write a good manual, one needs:
 1. Subject matter experts for authoritative content
 2. Enthusiastic reviewers who know the audience and have
  exposure to the subject matter
 3. Editors who know the language
 4. The technical writer

Trying as a single individual to serve in roles 1 through
4 is possible, but the more 'eyes' you have scanning the
pages the better the expected outcome. This is especially
true if you are writing complete books, manuals, and
 periodicals, from scratch.

There is also an equally beneficial flip side to this postulate.
If you find either transmogrify or endianess to be ugly,
and if you think anybody in particular can plant a garden,
repair an automobile, or write a technical manual, you might
 be management material.

Good points, Mike. Let's not forget that devil reverse type (drives me crazy

There are so many considerations regarding document design you could write a

As a general rule, if you have a system that you use for beta trials
and other experimental stuff, you should probably plan on rebuilding
it every year or so to start fresh. After you get the basics on, you
may want to ghost the drive so you can restore it more quickly.

Just as a BTW, the release candidate of Windows 7 seems really stable
for most of the things I do day in and day out. May want to get a copy
of that instead of restoring whatever OS you're using.
7.2 and later seems to run fine; I haven't even found a plug in that's
misbehaving.

It's not from Mif2Go, which is merely doing a
SaveAs MIF and a reload of the MIF and resave
of the FM. It's from Frame, either during one
of the saves or during the load.

Sounds like it has to do with a color property...
that's what FSeparation is for fonts, CSeparation
for conditions, etc. It's the position of the
color in the ColorCatalog. So it means something
is referencing a color that's not defined.

Hi all,

I know framemaker 9 has been really buggy with keyboard shortcuts, but I
haven't seen anything about this issue. According to the FM 9 help system,
the keyboard shortcut to open the spell checker is: esc shift+f+i+s. I've
tried pressing the following on my keyboard: press the ESC button, then
press shift+f+i+s. Now I've noticed that I haven't been able to get any of
the esc+shift combos to work, so this may be a user error on my part.

Keyboard Shortcut Problem

2009-05-25 Thread David Spreadbury
In Frame 7.2, you can also accomplish the same thing with Alt+e,l, or with
the mouse select Edit > Spelling Checker, or select the abc icon on the tool
bar.

Hi Joseph,

Are you trying the key combinations with a document open? As far as I know,
some of these shortcuts only work with an active document.

French Language Challenge

2009-05-25 Thread Jim Owens
In Frame, each paragraph tag has a designated language (on the Default
Fonts page of the Paragraph Designer). If I recall correctly,
the spell-checker for that language is applied.

Frame 7.2 re-installation issue

2009-05-25 Thread Art Campbell
As a general rule, if you have a system that you use for beta trials
and other experimental stuff, you should probably plan on rebuilding
it every year or so to start fresh. After you get the basics on, you
may want to ghost the drive so you can restore it more quickly.

Just as a BTW, the release candidate of Windows 7 seems really stable
for most of the things I do day in and day out. May want to get a copy
of that instead of restoring whatever OS you're using.
7.2 and later seems to run fine; I haven't even found a plug in that's
misbehaving.

[Free Framers] MIF2GO - (6507): Value of Separation out of range (11)

It's not from Mif2Go, which is merely doing a
SaveAs MIF and a reload of the MIF and resave
of the FM. It's from Frame, either during one
of the saves or during the load.

Sounds like it has to do with a color property...
that's what FSeparation is for fonts, CSeparation
for conditions, etc. It's the position of the
color in the ColorCatalog. So it means something
is referencing a color that's not defined.
