Re: Switching to RoboHelp for large-scale Frame-to-HTML Help Project

2009-12-14 Thread Jim Owens
Lots of time might be overstating it. Every new tool requires time to
learn and set up. Getting working help from Mif2Go doesn't take very
long at all -- maybe a couple of days to figure out what you need to do,
and then do it. Customizing the output to your presferences takes
longer. With Mif2GO you do have scripting options, so you can take your
customizations as far as you want -- which needs time, it's true.

I agree that Mif2GO requires a better grasp of CSS and HTML. If you're a
documentation professional charged with generating Help, you should be
familiar with these technologies.

Installing Framemaker 9 demo

Hi.
I've downloaded the Framemaker 9 trial version. After installing the complete

In the start-up process I get an error 'Framemaker cannot initialize its

After this error, Framemaker quits.
Anyone with any help?

Conditional Text used within a table with endnotes.

2009-12-14 Thread kgrace4715
I have a table that consists of multiple rows. Each row of the table
represents a specific condition. I currently have endnotes that
appear at the end of the table. The first instance of each endnote is
added via Special Endnote, there after I insert a cross-reference if
. It should be noted that I want each letter to represent a different
occurance of the end noted item. The problem that I am having is that
when I turn the certain conditions off i.e., the instance that
defined the endnote may or may not be included in the resulting
document with conditions applied.

I am sure I could remedy this via a separate table for each condition
but that would mean more work trying to maintain the multiple tables.
If for example I need to add another colum in the future I would have
to do it for each table. The other option I considered is making a
separarate set of endnotes for each condition. The downside of that is
that if all of the endnotes labeled 2 needed to be updated I would
have to go through them manually and fix them.

I have tried the update references but it does not allow for starting
or adjusting the numbering for those end notes that are not needed due
to the conditions eliminating them.

Sample Table

CondtionA 1
ConditionA 2
ConditionA 1
ConditionB 2
ConditionC 1

1 This is endnote 1
2 This is endnote 2

I get :

ConditionB 2

2 This is endnote 2

Not:

ConditionB 1 (This was 2 but since 1 is not used as a condition it
should be adjusted to 1

1 This is endnote 1 (This is actually the text for 2 but reads 1 since
it is the first condition.

RE: DITA File - FDK Programming

Subject: Re: DITA File - FDK Programming

Hi Shanmugham...

I can try to point you in the right direction .. but this isn't a simple
task.

There are no DITA-specific FDK functions .. to FrameMaker, DITA files
are just like any other structured document. It sounds like you're
trying to replace the selected content (elements) with a conref of the
same content, and generate that conref source file on the fly. Is that
correct?

Note that you can't just create a new DITA file and stuff the selected
content into it like you can with an unstructured document .. you'll
have to create the proper structure to contain the selected elements. If
you've selected a li element, you'll need to provide the ul and
body to contain the li. You'll also need to assign an ID to the li
as well as the newly created topic so you can use that to reference the
conref.

There is no new DITA file FDK function. You have two options .. you
can either create a new FrameMaker file, using F_ApiOpen (using the
proper parameters to create a new document from a template), then build
the necessary structure and add the selected content, then save that to
XML .. or .. you can just write the raw DITA XML to disk using the
necessary structure (I'd opt for the second method).

There is no create conref FDK function. To create the conref you'll
need to delete the selected content, then create an API-defined text
inset (an FO_TiApiClient). In this inset you'll paste the content from
the conref source (which you've created and opened), then you'll need to
lock the inset. You have to set some properties on the inset so that the
DITA support in FrameMaker will recognize it. To do this, you need to
create a conref in Frame (using the default method) and analyze it with
the FDK (use F_ApiGetString to query the FP_TiClientData,
FP_TiClientName, FP_TiClientSource, and FP_TiClientType properties, then
use that information when creating your conref .. this data will vary
depending on if you're trying to create conrefs for FM8, FM9 or
DITA-FMx). Note that on disk (in the DITA XML file), the conrefs are all
the same, standard DITA conrefs, but in Frame where you're building
them, they are very different.

If you need help on using specific functions, you should probably post
to the frame_dev Yahoo group where most of the FDK developers hang out.

Good luck!

Re: Conditional Text used within a table with endnotes.

2009-12-14 Thread Peter Gold
I don't have FrameMaker available right now, so I'm working from
memory, but AFAIK, there's no Special Endnote command in FrameMaker.
Endnotes in FrameMaker are created by manually typing the notes
somewhere in the current file, or a different file, in paragraphs that
include the auto-numbering property. Usually end notes are placed at
the end of the current file, or the separate file is placed at the end
of a book. You can place the end notes after a table, if you like. The
end note references are created by inserting cross-references to the
notes with Special Cross-Reference, using a cross-reference format
that captures the auto-number.

Showing or hiding the cross-reference reference numbers - in the
conditional table rows, in this case - has no effect on the
auto-numbered paragraphs that are the cross-reference sources. If you
want the end notes to appear and disappear when their reference
numbers are shown and hidden, conditionalize the notes.

If you want the end notes to remain in place and renumber when the
conditonalized reference numbers are hidden or shown, you'll need to
invent a strategy.

However, I'm wondering if you're using table footnotes - they appear
after a table. The visibility of table footnotes should depend upon
the visibility of the table footnote source content. If you're using
table footnotes, are you saying that the table footnotes aren't
showing/hiding in response to the showing/hiding of the source
content, and they are not renumbering?

HTH

Peter

Installing Framemaker 9 demo

2009-12-14 Thread Serge De Beil
Hi.
I've downloaded the Framemaker 9 trial version. After installing the complete
package I try to start the application.
In the start-up process I get an error 'Framemaker cannot initialize its
dictionaries. Either the LanguageDir entry specified in the initialization file
is missing or incorrect, or the files in the LanguageDir are missing or
corrupted'.
After this error, Framemaker quits.
Anyone with any help?

Thanks.
Serge

Conditional Text used within a table with endnotes.

2009-12-14 Thread kgrace4...@aol.com
I have a table that consists of multiple rows. Each row of the table
represents a specific condition. I currently have endnotes that
appear at the end of the table. The first instance of each endnote is
added via Special > Endnote, there after I insert a cross-reference if
. It should be noted that I want each "letter" to represent a different
occurance of the end noted item. The problem that I am having is that
when I turn the certain conditions off i.e., the instance that
"defined" the endnote may or may not be included in the resulting
document with conditions applied.

I am sure I could remedy this via a separate table for each condition
but that would mean more work trying to maintain the multiple tables.
If for example I need to add another colum in the future I would have
to do it for each table. The other option I considered is making a
separarate set of endnotes for each condition. The downside of that is
that if all of the endnotes labeled "2" needed to be updated I would
have to go through them manually and fix them.

I have tried the update references but it does not allow for starting
or adjusting the numbering for those end notes that are not needed due
to the conditions eliminating them.

Sample Table

CondtionA 1
ConditionA 2
ConditionA 1
ConditionB 2
ConditionC 1

1 This is endnote 1
2 This is endnote 2

I get :

ConditionB 2

2 This is endnote 2

Not:

ConditionB 1 (This was 2 but since 1 is not used as a condition it
should be adjusted to 1

1 This is endnote 1 (This is actually the text for 2 but reads 1 since
it is the first condition.

I am having trouble following you. So the end notes are numbered and
the numbering does not update as some are conditioned out? Have you
tried saving the file and then generating/updating the book again?

DITA File - FDK Programming

2009-12-14 Thread Shanmugham Subbaiyan
Thanks Scott. This really gave me a good headsup. Let me explore that way...

If
you've selected a element, you'll need to provide the and
to contain the . You'll also need to assign an ID to the
as well as the newly created topic so you can use that to reference the
conref.

There is no "new DITA file" FDK function.

There is no "create conref" FDK function.

If you need help on using specific functions, you should probably post
to the "frame_dev" Yahoo group where most of the FDK developers hang out.

Good luck!

Conditional Text used within a table with endnotes.

2009-12-14 Thread Peter Gold
I don't have FrameMaker available right now, so I'm working from
memory, but AFAIK, there's no Special > Endnote command in FrameMaker.
The
end note references are created by inserting cross-references to the
notes with Special > Cross-Reference, using a cross-reference format
that captures the auto-number.

HTH

Peter

Creating E-mail newsletters

2009-12-14 Thread Amy Severson
Hello,

We are looking for some help on best practices/software for creating e-mail
newsletters and then subsequently posting to our website. Does anyone know of
any good resources and/or software that would work with the most popular
browsers? We currently publish via an html editor but are interested in being
able to produce in a Microsoft program or equivalent.

Thank you.
