Dear Framers:
I have searched the archives of this list as I know I have asked this
question before.

Esteemed colleagues,
I am using Frame10 v10.0.2.419 on Windows 7.
I am trying to evaluate the use of text insets in a manual. The manual
describes software that contains a number of individual features that can be
combined as required for a particular customer. Has anyone used text insets
Text insets are used when you've got the same chunk of content that gets used
over over again in variety of places - the usefulness is that if something
changes to the standard text, you just change the inset once let it propagate
through to all the places where it's used - no editing of each
Is your printer set to Adobe PDF? If not, set that and try again.

How big are the individual insets and how much variation is there among manuals?
Will the individual customers' manuals need to be updated or are they one-offs?
Not counting third-party add-ons, there are at least three ways to
handle such variations:

Hello,
Has anyone else encountered that certain fonts are not shown in the font list
in Framemaker 9? The font is definitely installed on my system and see it
available in other applications. But in FM 9, in any of the font lists these
fonts don't appear. One is Arial Greek. I'm suspecting
Tom,
The manual describes software that contains a number of individual features
that can be combined as required for a particular customer.
Have you considered using conditional text? For example, say you have 3
customer flavors:
- econo
- medium
- deluxe
You could show or hide features
Ditto what Jeff said.
We have FrameMaker 10 unstructured books.
Examples of insets are copyright information and terminology. We reuse
these in every book so they are consistent.
We use a spreadsheet to keep track of the insets and what books they are in.
Keep headings in the container file
Additionally, if you have reusable text insets *and* you translate your
manuals, you can save money as the text only needs to be translated/handled
once.

Joy Kocar had some mostly excellent suggestions regarding text insets. Just a
few comments/clarifications.

Are you really sure it's installed? It shows in Control Panel Fonts?
Arial Greek is probably a virtual font. With Unicode support, you should
be able to find the Greek characters you need in Arial (where they've
always been, but you couldn't access them in FM7 or earlier).

Hi Sam,
Unfortunately, that is how it remains unless you are able to enforce the
correct use of templates that were set up to only use styles that have been
designed to match those in the end application, FM.
I have in the past been able to to convince some content developers to only use
