Subject: RE: Frame 11 Stability - Upgrade or Downgrade the new copy to
Frame9? HELP

I've had pretty good luck with FM 9, 10 and 11 and have used all three in
production settings over that last 8 months. There are quirks in all of them
although I would have to say the 11 is the best (now that that update has
minimized the crashes).

The new features and interface changes in each can be frustrating to
acclimate to. However, FM 11 fixed the focus problem with the Find/Change
dialog and returned the ability to call up various catalogs with hot keys,
both essential features of power users who were driven mad by their removal
in earlier versions.

For those of us who use various versions to match the needs of clients,
having to maintain installations of the various versions is a bit clumsy. My
primary clients use FM5.5, 6, 7, 9, and 11 so I have various versions on
different computers. (Note: Translation work necessitates, at times, return
of the translated files in the clients preferred format, and with FDA
controlled stuff, mifs throwing out of newer features stuff carries the
potential for problems even if no new features were thought to have been
used in the handling process.)

I'm afraid to update my TCS3 to TCS4 for fear it will cause problems with my
access to FM10. (I'm using FM 11 onsite at my current contract job, their
licence on one of their computers). Of course I could just buy a whole new
license for TCS 4 rather than upgrade, but that expense makes no sense to me
at this point, and given that installing CS6 resulted inthe deactivation of
my Acrobat license after 30 days, I don't trust Adobe's installers to leave
other licenses untouched.

Details of my Acrobat deactivation for those who care: Installed CS6
resulting in a non-installation of the Acrobat X component since I already
had it installed for TCS3. (A window notified me that Acobat X had not been
installed.) However, the deactivation of Acrobat exactly 30 days later
convinces me that rather than seeing this as a non-installation, something
in the CS6 installer flagged Acrobat as being in the try out mode and then
deactivated it after 30 days.)

Hi folks,

Does anybody know what this progressbar file is used for?
It sits under C:\Program Files\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker10\fminit\progressbar

Sometimes, when Framemaker performs a lengthy and time-consuming operation, I
get the Framemaker (Not Responding) message, even if it does not get stuck
completely. I think, using a progress bar instead of this stupid and
misleading message would be more appropriate. When seeing this message, an
inexperienced user may just try to exit Framemaker instead of waiting a bit
longer.

Thanks,

Cross-reference to a previous file

2012-12-11 Thread Roger Shuttleworth

Hello All

FM11.0.1.382 on Windows Vista.

I have a FM book that is divided into parts, with divider files that
indicate where a part begins. After the divider file comes the first
chapter in that part. I want to insert a running header/footer to catch
the title from the divider file and put it in the following chapter
files' headers. So for example:

book
  part 1: Inventory
  chapter 1: Setting up inventory

In the header for chapter 1 I want to pick up the word Inventory from
my divider file.

I understand that, using $paratext[paratag] in the running H/f I can
define the paratag to use, and FrameMaker searches backwards until it
comes across a matching paragraph. But does it search preceding files,
or just the current file? (Because in my testing it only seems to find
things in the current file.)

Thanks.

odd FM10 search bug?

2012-12-11 Thread Robert Lauriston
I'm using FM10 Find with Document scope to search for a string that
appears five times in the current document, the first three in running
text, the last two in a table.

Find seemed to come up with seven instances, which made me think there
was a duplicate copy of the table. After a very confused few minutes I
figured out that Find was actually looping back to search the table
twice, so the seven hits are 1-2-3-4-5-4-5.

Anybody else encountered this?

managing feedback on work in progress from multiple SMEs

2012-12-11 Thread Robert Lauriston
I'm working in an agile shop where the developers are mostly on Linux
or treating Macs as Linux boxes. Source is in FM10.

It would be nice to be able to do the doc task for each user story
when the developers finish with it, but I've had problems with people
not getting their comments back to me quickly, and ending up with
having to piece comments together from various drafts. In some cases I
got conflicting comments on the same stuff. No big deal to sort out
but a big waste of scarce time.

Sending out PDFs of only the pages with changes a particular person
made avoids most of those problems, but it's a lot of extra work.

Acrobat shared review is problematic since I'm continuously updating
the FrameMaker source, though at least there would be only one draft
in circulation at any one time.

I could wait until all of a sprint's updates for a particular document
are done before sending it out for review, but that might lead to a
serious crunch.

Has anyone come up with better technique for managing this sort of workflow?

Re: Cross-reference to a previous file

2012-12-11 Thread Lin Sims
Current file only, unless that's changed with FM11 (and I doubt it).

Where I work, we have a sort-of-similar issue, and we solved it by
using cross-references. It means you'll have to remember to check that
you're pointing to the right files if you add any new ones in, but it
beats typing everything in (and you'd have to manually update that
way, too).

progressindication.swf in the FM10 installation directory

2012-12-11 Thread Roman Banks
Hi folks,
?
Does anybody know what this progressbar file is used for?
It sits under C:\Program Files\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker10\fminit\progressbar
?
Sometimes, when Framemaker performs a lengthy and time-consuming operation, I
get the "Framemaker (Not Responding)" message, even if it does not get stuck
completely. I think, using a progress bar instead of this stupid and
misleading?message would be more appropriate. When seeing this message, an
inexperienced user may just try to exit Framemaker instead of waiting a bit
longer.
?
Thanks,
Roman

Frame 11 Stability - Upgrade or Downgrade the new copy to Frame9? HELP

2012-12-11 Thread Keith Soltys
I'd be interested in hearing about that too. I've given up on the track edits
feature in FM10 because of crashes.

Regards
Keith

HELP

Have you (or anyone else) seen an improvement in the crashes when saving books
that have files with track edits on? That one of the big things that bothers me
about FM 10. I have the TCS 4 upgrade, but haven't done much with it.

Frame 11 Stability - Upgrade or Downgrade the new copy to Frame 9? HELP

2012-12-11 Thread Robert Lauriston
That would almost make it worth paying for FM11, except on principle
I'm not going to pay to get back old features that were removed by
"upgrades."

Cross-reference to a previous file

2012-12-11 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hello All

FM11.0.1.382 on Windows Vista.

I have a FM book that is divided into parts, with divider files that
indicate where a part begins. After the divider file comes the first
chapter in that part. I want to insert a running header/footer to catch
the title from the divider file and put it in the following chapter
files' headers. So for example:
book
   part 1: Inventory
   chapter 1: Setting up inventory

In the header for chapter 1 I want to pick up the word "Inventory" from
my divider file.

I understand that, using <$paratext[paratag]> in the running H/f I can
define the paratag to use, and FrameMaker searches backwards until it
comes across a matching paragraph.

Cross-reference to a previous file

2012-12-11 Thread Lin Sims
Current file only, unless that's changed with FM11 (and I doubt it).

Where I work, we have a sort-of-similar issue, and we solved it by
using cross-references. It means you'll have to remember to check that
you're pointing to the right files if you add any new ones in, but it
beats typing everything in (and you'd have to manually update that
way, too).

Cross-reference to a previous file

2012-12-11 Thread Robert Lauriston
Another way to work around that is to consolidate everything into a single file.
