* Compound images are lost and must be preserved independently of FM (for
example by making images incorporating its screen shots, call outs, line
art, etc. into one graphic)

There are some scripting solutions for converting compound images to
composite images in FrameMaker. I don't have an off-the-shelf solution, but
if you contact me off-list, I can tell you what is possible based on your
specific requirements. Thank you very much.

Subject: Re: [Framers] FrameMaker to Confluence

My company is preparing to copy numerous FrameMaker 7 manuals to Confluence.
Based on past postings among contributors to this list (including the late
Jeremy Griffith at OMSYS), I've developed a working method for converting
legacy FM chapters via Mif2Go to Confluence-friendly XHTML that can be
imported into Confluence's "<>" Source Editor. There are a GREAT MANY
bothersome prerequisites and manual-tweak steps, but it seems to be my only
recourse. I've tested the method on a few chapters and it seems to work,
but have not begun my all out assault on the dozens of manuals I'll
ultimately need to convert over.

Not sure if Mif2Go will work on the latest versions of FrameMaker, so this
all may be moot.

The process is too long to paste politely into a single Framers posting, but
I'll gladly share it with anyone privately on request.

The types of steps required included:

* Obtain latest version (including beta modules) of Mif2Go, as only this
contains Jeremy's Confluence-friendly output options
* Remove any tables from anchored frames
* All images must be reinserted within Confluence later
* Compound images are lost and must be preserved independently of FM (for
example by making images incorporating its screen shots, call outs, line
art, etc. into one graphic)
* Links, Footnotes, and Small caps must be marked for fixing later in
Confluence as they don't convert well
* Remove discretionary hyphens
* Numbered lists need to be recreated manually in Confluence
* Links and cross references need to be recreated manually in Confluence
* Unexpected character formatting must be corrected in Confluence
* Check for bad image references in IE (ok in Chrome and Firefox)

Thanks,
Kevin Ryan

Re: [Framers] New paragraph tag revert back in TOC when book is updated

2018-04-19 Thread David Artman
I suggest you forget about the Heading 2 Special and do it The Right
   Way.

   Heading 1:

   .< =0>< =0>< =0>< =0>\t

   Heading 2:

   ..< =0>< =0>< =0>\t

[You are unclear--between you code examples and your rendering
examples--whether or not you want a period after every numbering
structure, so I'll assume that you do.]

   Heading 3:

   ...< =0>< =0>\t

   Heading 4:

   ....< =0>\t
   Heading 5:
   .\t
Notice that the < =0> reset to zero without displaying the building
   block value. Viz:
   [1]https://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/2015/using/index.html#t=usin
   g-framemaker-2015%2Ffrm_page_layout_pl%2FLists_and_autonumbering-.htm
This method relies on resetting paragraph number each chapter in your
book (to make first building block = 0); but it does not require
multiple styles for each heading to reset other numbering structure
   parts to 0.
IMO, the only reason one should use multiple styles for the same
'thing' is if you want different padding or coloration or something.
And I only use "First" styles (common in step numbering) to change
Space Before Pgf compared to normal step styles [FWIW].
Finally, unless you have a style rule (.gov means probably so!), I'd
alternate , , , and ... and maybe even get into if you
find yourself diving down to H5 and lower. A string of period-separated
numbers can become eye-melting with the wrong typeface and the right
numbers (all 1s; 3s, 8s, and 9s; and so forth).

   HTH;

   David

   Hi Framers,
I've been wrestling with a couple of elusive issues in Frame 12 when
trying to add a new paragraph tag in my chapters and getting it to show
up in my TOC. I was hoping one or more of you might be able to put me
on the right path, please. I'm having some difficulty articulating the
issues as I write this, so I'll just start with "Issue #1" for now.
   Issue #1
In my FM book chapters I have been trying to create a one-off of the
Heading 2 paragraph tag (let's call it "Heading 2 Special") where the
   numbering syntax is set to
