Re: Clarification on Handling Large Book Files

2009-02-05 Thread Brian Lamborn

Joseph,

The problem may be your network, not a Frame issue at all. I have noticed at my
location that if I am working with files on a network drive that the
performance is way slower. For this reason, I work on a book on my local drive.
At the end of the day I copy the folder with the book to the network directory
as a backup. I always clear out (delete) the previous day's backup before
copying to the network directory. I haven't had any performance issues doing it
this way.

The side benefit of doing this is when the network goes down (which it only
does when it is very inconvenient for you), you still have your files and can
continue working.

Thanks,

Brian

Apparently, my imprecise language for describing my problem with 650-page is
causing some confusion. Here's a clarification.

I am talking about one Frame book that contains multiple frame files.

This book contains 650-pages, which I convert into one PDF.

This Frame book is on a network.

There are no OLEs, only graphics. These graphics are imported by reference.

Here are my system specs:
Windows XP Professional
Intel Core Duo CPU
2 gigs of RAM

Screen Capture

2009-01-26 Thread Brian Lamborn
All,

Not really a FrameMaker question, but...

I am creating some manuals and I need to include some screen shots of our
configuration software. Any recommendations on which screen capture software
works best?

Thanks,

List of Figures/Tables Question

2009-01-26 Thread Brian Lamborn
All,

I am using FM8.0p273 on a XP SP3 machine.

When I insert a table or figure into my document, I have the formatting set up
to number the figures and tables. The formatting is set up as follows:

F: Figure n+:

T:Table n+:

The numbering works flawlessly. However, when I generate a list of figures or a
list of tables, I would like FrameMaker to pull the numbering with the title,
not just the title as it does now.

In the past when I was FORCED (by client requirements) to develop manuals using
Word, I could do this. Surely Frame has a way of making this happen. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Screen Capture / Framer's List Issue - Slightly OT

2009-01-26 Thread Brian Lamborn
All,

Sorry about this post hitting hitting the list today. I actually sent it last
Thursday, a little while before Lea Rush's post on the same subject hit the
list. I was one of those that Richard Combs mentioned, whose posts weren't
reaching the list. That seems to be fixed now.

Anyhow, I have the info I needed and I am currently trying the SnagIt demo and
so far it is working well.

Thanks,

Finding Fonts

2008-12-30 Thread Brian Lamborn
All,

I have been using InDesign for several years and have recently started using
FrameMaker (FM8 on XP Pro) again (use dictated in each case by client
requirements) after several years away from it. InDesign has a feature where
you can search for the use of a specific font. Does FrameMaker have a similar
function? I have a document that says I am using unavailable fonts when I
open it. I also cannot run the Update Book function because of this same error.

I have gone through the document page-by-page and do not see any fonts that
appear out of the ordinary. I have all of my Paragraph definitions are set to
use Arial. I have manually selected all of the text and attempted to force
everything to Arial. I then save the file and close. When I re-open, I get the
same error.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Brian
