buying FrameMaker

2013-10-15 Thread Anita Legsdin
Is it at all possible to still buy FrameMaker 10 somewhere? I'm retired and
no longer have access to the program, and buying version 11 is a bit too
expensive for me. Any hints?

job opening

2011-12-31 Thread Anita Legsdin
I will be retiring the end of January, and my position is open. I currently
work out of Bellevue, WA, and the people you would be writing for are also
located in Bellevue, WA (although the applicant could reside in either in
Seattle/Bellevue, Foster City CA, or American Forks UT). You would be
writing documentation primarily for Authorize.Net. You can find the listing
on the Visa website (http://corporate.visa.com/careers/index.shtml), job
#114173. Although it's not required, a knowledge of structured
documentation (DITA) could possibly be helpful.

Accept and reject changes

2011-06-22 Thread Anita Legsdin
I'm using Frame 10, trying out the Track Text Edits feature. It's no problem
when I make changes, but when it comes time to accept or reject changes, it
looks like I have to go to the menu bar every time I want to look for the
next change, then accept or reject it. I don't want to blindly accept all
changes. Is there a way to keep a dialog box open, like Word does, so I can
easily walk through the document?

half-size pages

2011-06-04 Thread Anita Legsdin
I'm desperately trying to set up a document that will be printed as a half
page: 5.5 wide by 8.5 tall. Frame is giving me Heck for trying to tamper
with an 8.5x11 page size, and I can't do it in Frame. The best I've been
able to do is to create the document in Word (SO easy), save it, then import
it into Frame. Once I've done that, then I can continue adding material.

Isn't there a ready-made templatre that I can use? (Now that I no longer
need it) A landscape page with two columns just doesn't work the same
way, a hard return won't move the following text to the next column.

Thanks,
Anita

frame 8 and 9 crashing

2011-03-08 Thread Anita Legsdin
I have a file that reduces both Frame 9 (p237) as well as Frame 8 to a pile
of dusty rubble, although I'm wondering why it's only starting to crash NOW.
The file has been in production since September, and this is the 4th update
to it. Here are the particulars:
 1. Windows 7, 32-bit
 2. There are 2 major conditions in the file (SOAP and XML)
 3. Frame crashes when creating only one of the conditions (XML)
 4. It didn't start crashing until I added this 4th update--which is located
far from the location which is messed up.

I added a new table, with about 8 rows at the end of the table marked with
the SOAP condition. About 8 or 10 pages later is the table which has been in
the file, unchanged, since the first version; the first 3 rows of this table
have alternating SOAP and XML conditions applied. This is the page that is
now, suddenly, messed up. The .fm file that I reopen after the crash has
text superimposed on top of other text (only on the page with this last,
original, table). The SOAP version of the guide is produced with no
complaint; it's only when I try to set the XML condition that Frame screams
and disappears. The error happens immediately after I set the Show/Hide
Conditions dialog.

With Frame 9, the crash is sudden and violent. Frame 8's crash is much more
polite (the error message is not the system error message, but a note from
Frame saying it has encountered an error and needs to quit).

If someone wants to see the actual file, I can email it to you. If you have
any hints, I'd appreciate hearing them. I finally removed the special
conditions applied to the first 3 rows of the original table, and now it
works smoothly, without crashing. What I don't understand is, if I added
section B, why should it be section A, in a different part of the chapter,
that fails?

Thanks,

RE: Real Life Migration to Structured Doc

2006-01-31 Thread Anita Legsdin
In my limited experience, Epic provides only an XML editor, and you're limited
to working in native XML. FrameMaker can not only open XML files, but saves as
XML as well, and in between is able to handle graphics better than Epic. If
you're used to using variables and conditional text, then FrameMaker is a
better tool.

You should also investigate training and other services provided by Lynne
Price, she's one of the best when it comes to structured FrameMaker.

We must move to structure to meet our future XML goal, but are
unfamiliar with both the transition and method to do so. We are also
unfamiliar with the possibilities and cost involved. We are merely
looking at all of the possibilities and the long term value for our
dollar.

variables and conditions in read/write rules?

2006-01-24 Thread Anita Legsdin
Environment: Frame 7.0
We use XML files to set conditions and variables for our production queue
system, which is Java-based. I'm thinking of alternatives, and am wondering if
it's possible to set up a structured application that opens these XML files and
translates a conditionconditionname/condition element into a Frame
condition, and the same with a variable element that contains a name and
description child element. I'd like to end up with a Frame document with
conditions and variables set as they are in the XML file, so that the settings
can be imported into other books. I thought it might be possible, by reading
the Structured Application Developer's Guide, but it's shy on examples. Has
anyone ever done this?
