[Framers] Thumb Tabs

2016-08-10 Thread Denis Daly
Hi,

For a new Technical User Guide, we are exploring the use of printed 'Thumb
Tabs' (correct name?).

These would be printed on page one of each section; their purpose to aid the
user in retrieving relevant information more quickly.

Do you think this is a sensible idea, and can it be done using FM?

I use FM12, Windows 10.

Thanks in advance,

Denis

Oh, yeah, "Acrobat Data" also includes compiled bookmarks for the headings,
figure captions, table titles and other any paragraph styles that you select as
bookmarks in the PDF Setup dialog.

Those are not new options. They have been part of the Print dialog
approximately forever.

Print to File means that Frame will pipe the printer output data stream to a
file rather than the printer port. If you have selected a PostScript printer
(including the Adobe PDF virtual printer as well as a physical printer model),
the output will be a PostScript file, which you would presumably then
explicitly distill to PDF if you have Adobe Acrobat Distiller. If you have
selected a non-PostScript printer, the file will be the correct language for
the selected printer (e.g., PCL for an HP printer), which will not be useful
for producing a PDF.

Generate Acrobat Data does exactly that -- it generates (and includes in the
PostScript printer stream) all the code necessary to make a PDF interactive
(e.g., ID tags for the paragraph that are targets of hyperlinks, hyperlinks to
those IDs and external URLs). When printing to a physical printer, all that
kind of information is extraneous, so Frame doesn't generate it. If your final
deliverable is PDF (either directly or produced by Distiller from a PostScript
file), you want to tell Frame to include all this data that Acrobat knows how
to handle.

HI,

I have just recently received a new PC and Acrobat Standard DC, at the same
time. Lots of changes at once.

I have am using File -> Print Book with the settings as in attached file.

I have managed to generate a valid PDF, but I was wondering if someone could
please explain the two check box settings on the left most Dialog Box (Print
Book)?:

1. Print to File

2. Generate Acrobat Data

I did have to uncheck the checkbox 'Rely on system fonts; do not use document
fonts' on the Adobe PDF Document Properties Dialog Box, though.

Thanks.

Hi Framers,

Just when things were chugging along nicely for us after the last major move of
our email list, GoDaddy (whose servers hosted this Mailman list) arbitrarily
decided to delete the entire list on Tuesday of this week. Brad Anderson has
moved the list to a new host, Dreamhost.com, and we are all set to go. Again.
Hopefully we'll have no more disruptions to our conversations. Thanks everyone
for your patience. And thanks to Brad for the long hours he spent futilely
trying to communicate with GoDaddy and then ultimately redoing everything again
on the new server.

Re: [Framers] Mif2Go conversion to Word

2016-01-06 Thread Denis Daly
I have been following this particular thread with interest.

Does anyone have an opinion on using Acrobat Writer to edit the PDF file
created from FM? The intention being to not revert to the original FM file and
that all future edits would be done using Acrobat writer only.

This process only to be used on a small number of FM files. 'Normal' practice
is to use FM exclusively. I am thinking of doing this as my workload is
increasing and we do not intend to purchase a second FM licence or train a
second user in FM. Instead a second person is available but that person has
Acrobat writer experience.

Thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,

Denis

Gary -

When FrameMaker has focus on a file - not when I choose a file in the .book
window - that works for one file at a time. I need to do this for several
books, each of which has numerous constituent (or "child") files. I project
that each book will be many hundreds of pages. I've been through the drill of
having to piece together numerous files to have only one Word file. That is a
_lot_ of work. I expect that to convert from .rtf into some format of Word
(.doc or .docx) will be just that much more. Then, if for any reason, I must
change a source file, then I have to go through the drill again.

It is exactly that type of situation for which the preferred method is to
encode as many features and functions in the FrameMaker files so that they
exist in the output such as .pdf.

I just saved one file as .rtf, and in it, simple cross-references to
subordinate (or "child") headings do not work. Same in .doc, and the layout is
severely fouled, to boot. In .docx, the cross-references do not work, but the
layout does not appear to be damaged.

It occurs to me that I could combine all the constituent files into only one
file and not even use the .book feature of FrameMaker, but I'm sure that that
is not a recommended - let alone a best - practice.

So, those are not possible courses of action for me. Unless, of course, I
might be allowed to provide work product of such quality, which I seriously
doubt.

And, as Dan Harding indicated in his email while I was developing this email,
.fm to .rtf or .doc or .docx is a bad deal.

You want File > Save As and for "Save as type", select Microsoft RTF. You can
open that file in Word and then continue to work on it as an RTF file, or save
it to a Word format. I prefer going from a PDF to Word over going from FM to
Word, although the reasons escape me at the moment.

But I don't do hard core work in Word, so I'm just wondering if there is
something I am missing, of if there is a lingering dedication to Mif2Go based
on Word conversion issues I know were present back in FM 7 or even 9, but maybe
not so much today. I hope others will chime in if they have any insight on
that. I know Jeremy was a great guy and he earned a lot of respect from the FM
community, but Mif2Go was not an easy tool to work with. It did absolutely
everything I ever wanted it to do, but it was not an easy path to get there.

Gary

HI,

It has been recommended to me, by my Manager, that I use Sourcesafe to control

Currently, I manually archive on a weekly basis by copying files from my local

To add to what I said earlier, I'd say don't be specific about the samples you
want, and assume that any single sample will be a subset of what is needed in
the template. Ask for a group of samples that demonstrate the range of things
that are desired and then expect there to be things that are missed in that set
of samples. Creating a template is an iterative process.

Example of a good Accessory User Guide

Hi,

Would anyone have a good example of an effective template of a user guide for

I am looking for an optimum layout which conveys succinctly the instructions

different layouts; just wondering if someone has already been down this road

Without meaning to be critical, Denis, your question isn't really answerable as
it stands. What sort of accessory, and for what? Is there anything on the thing
for which the accessory is an accessory for? Do you need to match that?

Looking at your company's website, it seems that you are involved in ordnance
detection and disposal. That's a pretty specialized and technical field and
would, I imagine, involve many legal requirements for hazmat warnings and so
forth. Doesn't your company have an already-defined set of documentation
guidelines, look-and-feel and/or templates?

If you can provide more details, maybe someone on this list can give you some
leads. Aside from that, unstructured FrameMaker template construction isn't
hard, but if you want to start with something that will stand the test of time
you might consider involving a document designer. It's a big field, which
starts with the document end-users' requirements, delivery media and so on.

Okay, I just did some testing ... the CMYK bug at Acrobat PDF output is NOT
fixed in FrameMaker 12.0.4 as far as I can tell.

My output PDF still shows the problem, although I cannot tell anymore if some
things were fixed, since I deleted my old test output files.

FWIW, I do get a lot of error messages sent to the FrameMaker console with CMYK
selected (none with RGB selected), so I will look to see if there is something

Well, one of the main things I’m looking for in going from FM11 to FM12 is the
fix for the fatal crashes that I get from using the scroll wheel on my mouse in
conjunction with the xrefs panel. That’s #1 for me – I usually blow up once a
day with that one. The second feature that I’m looking forward to is the
“remember where everything was left” feature that allows you to exit out of FM
and then pick up right where you left off when you start it back up again – I
usually have 4 or 5 docs open at one time remembering where I left off from
the prior week gets really challenging.

Jeff is right-on, as far as I'm concerned. Definitely install Acrobat before
installing FM (making sure to not install the FM PDF creation thingy on top of
your existing Acrobat installation).

My own question is if my company should bump up to FM 12 from FM 11 if our
deliverables are only pdf files. That's it -- my company is just not concerned
with html, etc.

Plus, at $1,000 a pop, Adobe isn't too concerned with pricing itself out of
reach of more potential customers. What are the differences between the two
versions that we should make the move?

I was just wondering about best practice regarding this.

I assume it is recommended to use Acrobat rather than say a cheaper PDF editor

Also, could someone explain what happens when Acrobat is co-installed, in terms

Just for completeness, is the RGB vs CMYK problem only an issue using the PDF
creator that comes bundled with FM, or is it also an issue with the separate

Hi Denis,
Save As CMYK PDFs is still broken in Frame 12.
I raised a bug on the Adobe bug base and had an email 2 weeks before
Christmas saying that they'd fixed the issue and it would be sorted in the next
update (v12.0.4, I suppose).
But there is no indication when this will be released. I emailed them to ask
and they didn't reply. I asked on the Adobe FrameMaker forum and just got lolz.
So I am having to change a bunch of colour definitions in by source files and
make RGB PDFs as a workaround for now. Annoying.

I am still unable to save a PDF using CMYK. It will save fine using RGB setting.

Adobe Illustrator Dimensioning Tool

2014-11-28 Thread Denis Daly
Hi,

Hopefully, it is ok to ask this question here.

Does anyone know if AI has a dimensioning tool, please?

I have used Corel Draw in the past and it had a very easy to use tool, to
enable dimensioning of objects (width, height, etc ).

A quick online search revealed that a plugin is required. Is this so?

Thanks,

Denis

RE: . PDF query

2014-10-20 Thread Denis Daly
Thanks to everyone who replied. I appreciate all your comments.

I will report the issue to Adobe as recommended by David Davis.

I have just saved the Book as a PDF (RGB selected) and all the images and text
appear to be present.

We will eventually wish to send to a print company though. I hope Adobe are
able to fix this bug.

In the meantime I will investigate the .ai issue and see if that is causing my
problem.

Thanks again,

Denis

I doubt you're doing anything wrong, it's just FrameMaker being buggy.

Hi,

My name is Denis Daly. I have recently started using FrameMaker.

I have had an odd issue today. I saved an individual chapter as a PDF and about
40% of the images were not present. They are available in the 'Graphics' folder.

I resaved and the same thing happened.

I then saved a third time but selected RGB instead of CYMK; all images were
present.

I am using FM 12 with the recent update installed.

Can anyone explain this behaviour, please?
