Re: [Framers] Adobe removes functionality from a perpetual license? Adobe
Hi Tammy, I feel your pain. For years I was perfectly content using Acrobat Pro XI. My work computers would be cycled to new computers every two or three years but I was happy because my Acrobat Pro XI installation file would work like a charm, again and again. Until . . . my PC needed to be re-imaged for security reasons last year. Ever since then the program has refused to re-install and I've been forced to subscribe to Acrobat annually. For clean-up work I am still occasionally using a very old version of FrameMaker (one so old that I am embarrassed to tell you what it is; it makes FrameMaker 2019 seem like a spring chicken). It has survived the re-installations and still works, but I expect the same portcullis will crash down on it soon. We call our programs "tools" but the analogy has not been fully embraced by software companies. Imagine a carpenter getting an e-mail that the subscription to his/her hammer has expired and will need to be renewed. 'Your hammer will no longer be operable." Re: [Framers] : How Install FrameMaker Update Patches on Old FM Versions?
Robert, thanks a major bunch for the suggestion to run the patch exe files in XP compatibility mode! That worked and I now have the patches I need on my new PC. I wanted the FM patches to be up to date because I am still trying to get mif2go to work on the new PC. My management does not think kindly of PDFs books. It thinks a hierarchical set of interlinked topic pages is always the way to go. It was all I could do to establish a routine of including attached PDFs (created from Confluence space export) to the front summary page of my online Confluence guides. Confluence's native PDF generator is good for interlinks and bookmarks, but tends to be pretty ugly and to do silly things like vanish random images, break pages wrong, and resize (screw up) PDF sub-heading font sizes automatically under the misapprehension that it knows what it's doing. Our long-term customers probably sensed the quality loss when we shifted from FM-generated to Confluence-generated PDFs. If our customers start complaining about PDF quality I might be able to justify the Scroll PDF Exporter option you describe (and thanks for the "separate instance" tip, which I'll keep in mind). "How am I using MIf2Go to migrate to Confluence": A few years back I pored over posts to this list from Jeremy and you about this task, and I benefited from your suggestions then and from the beta version of Mif2go Jeremy produced that has Confluence-related flags in its INI file. I have a bare-bones function that Mif2go serves: Take our image-laden, multi-character-font-infested FrameMaker files, strip their images, and map about a dozen different colors and fonts of FM character formats to Confluence's simpler/more minimalistic Bold/Not Bold character formatting. Also to map FM headings to an analogous hierarchy of HTML headings. I've had an INI file I made just for this "FM to Confluence" purpose and it's gratifying for me just to be able to paste the Mif2Go html output into the "<>" Source Editor of individual Confluence pages within my online guides. Then I update the content in Confluence to our current product and add fresh images. And thanks, Ragnar. It's good to know the 7.2 version is stable in Windows 10. Thanks again everyone for your help here! Re: [Framers] How Install FrameMaker Update Patches on Old FM Versions?
Hi Phyllis, Hi, NOT what you are asking, but I am wondering: what will you do with FM docs in confluence? We are converting years of traditional FM-to-PDF books guides to online guides in Confluence that take better advantage of interlinked parent-child page hierarchies and the easy-update capabilities of Confluence. Incidentally, for those readers who still prefer PDF books, we are also including in the initial Confluence title page a link to a supplemental PDF-export produced by Confluence (not highly impressive) tweaked a bit in Acrobat to look more presentable. It is not a fool-proof process (as Mif2Go is out of date as well since Jeremy Griffith's passing!), but as soon as the conversions are completed, my company is unfortunately planning to move away from FrameMaker. [Framers] How Install FrameMaker Update Patches on Old FM Versions?
Hello, We are migrating and updating scads of accumulated FrameMaker documents into Confluence, using the old FrameMaker version 7.2 (with MIf2Go as a converter). Yes, I know this is an old version, but it works. My old PC is being decommissioned and I'm reinstalling FrameMaker 7.2 on a new Windows 10 machine. When I visit the FrameMaker patch web page at https://supportdownloads.adobe.com/product.jsp?product=22=Windows I see two patches applicable for FrameMaker 7.2 that I want to install. My problem is I forget just how I am supposed to handle the downloaded patches' Zip folders. When I unzip it one in place within the Downloads folder and click its contained setup.exe program, a wizard starts but gives me an ominous "Severe" error popup (not elaborating what is so severe), followed by an off-the-wall message that "The system is running very low on disk. You need to free up at least 40 MB of space" when in fact my hard drive has plenty of space. Alternatively, I also tried clicking Help > Updates from within the FrameMaker program itself, but this produces a pop up "Uploading Adobe Online Components" highlighting "AWEXFiles.txt" followed by a message that reads "There was a problem connecting to Adobe Online" and "Adobe Online Error;File Could Not Be Downloaded." Am I doing something wrong? Any tips from you FrameMaker mavens would be appreciated. Maybe it's an Adobe end-of-life statement for version 7.2. Thank you to everyone for sharing your Mif2Go experience with different FrameMaker and Windows versions. The gist so far is that Mif2Go should work on Windows 10, and FrameMaker itself seems to work down to Lea's FrameMaker 8.1 (as opposed to my 7.2). Re: [Framers] Transfer from FrameMaker into Word
I would advise against using Acrobat's "Save as Microsoft Word" function. When I tried this, Acrobat would produce an exquisite-*looking* copy of my PDF. But the moment I'd try to edit the file in Word, the layout would do silly things like wrap off the page into oblivion. Re: [Framers] FrameMaker to Confluence
My company is preparing to copy numerous FrameMaker 7 manuals to Confluence. Based on past postings among contributors to this list (including the late Jeremy Griffith at OMSYS), I've developed a working method for converting legacy FM chapters via Mif2Go to Confluence-friendly XHTML that can be imported into Confluence's "<>" Source Editor. There are a GREAT MANY bothersome prerequisites and manual-tweak steps, but it seems to be my only recourse. I've tested the method on a few chapters and it seems to work, but have not begun my all out assault on the dozens of manuals I'll ultimately need to convert over. Not sure if Mif2Go will work on the latest versions of FrameMaker, so this all may be moot. The process is too long to paste politely into a single Framers posting, but I'll gladly share it with anyone privately on request. The types of steps required included: * Obtain latest version (including beta modules) of Mif2Go, as only this contains Jeremy's Confluence-friendly output options * Remove any tables from anchored frames * All images must be reinserted within Confluence later * Compound images are lost and must be preserved independently of FM (for example by making images incorporating its screen shots, call outs, line art, etc. into one graphic) * Links, Footnotes, and Small caps must be marked for fixing later in Confluence as they don't convert well * Remove discretionary hyphens * Numbered lists need to be recreated manually in Confluence * Links and cross references need to be recreated manually in Confluence * Unexpected character formatting must be corrected in Confluence * Check for bad image references in IE (ok in Chrome and Firefox) Thanks, Kevin Ryan Kevin Ryan Technical Writer, Research & Development P: 802-865-1170x82412 F: 802-865-1171 E: kr...@harriscomputer.com 426 Industrial Avenue Suite 140 Williston, Vermont 05495 www.ssivt.com This message has been sent on behalf of a company that is part of the Harris Operating Group of Constellation Software Inc. [Framers] Windows 7 Update Garbling Graphics on Left Auxiliary Monitor Only
This is an "anyone found a better workaround?" question. I know this sounds strange to those who haven't experienced it yet, but a Microsoft security update (KB4034679) in the last few months causes big problems for my left-placed auxiliary monitor. It renders all three of my image editors (PaintShop Pro, Snagit, and GIMP) almost useless in one monitor only by garbling images, misrepresenting clipboard content pasted into the editor, and refusing to refresh images properly. Image screens on my left auxiliary monitor (my desk monitor) don't refresh properly and if I drag them around they display skid marks reminiscent of something you might see on the Road Runner cartoon (beep beep beep beep). It also causes "Image Not Found" errors followed by crashes in FrameMaker-all when the referenced image in question is correctly present. If I perform the same actions with the same programs on my right-hand primary monitor (my laptop), there is no problem whatsoever Here is a link by someone who has documented the problem well: https://www.computerworld.com/article/3215194/microsoft-windows/two-of-this-months-win7-patches-causing-second-screen-problems.html I have proven that the problem goes away when KB4034679 update is removed from my laptop, but since it is a security-based Microsoft update, my corporate IT wanted me to reinstall the update-also successfully restoring the problem to my system. :< Apparently this graphics-rendering problem affects only monitors having "negative screen coordinates"-as an external #2 monitor located to the left of the primary #1 monitor does. I just tested changing my Windows screen setup to have the #1 laptop on the left and the #2 desk monitor on the right-and the #2 monitor showed no graphics problem. But I would prefer not to have Microsoft determine how my desk is arranged. Might anyone know a less-silly workaround or fix for this problem? [Framers] Text Ghosting?
Hello, I'm observing a weird phenomenon beginning at a particular point midway through a graphic-intensive and conditional-text intensive 70-page FrameMaker 7.2 document. I Wonder if any of you mavens might have seen this odd problem before, as I rarely have any problem with this FrameMaker program and this is very novel for me. Starting just after an inline graphic on page 67 , the two remaining words in the sentence look as though they skidded horizontally out of control. "as needed" was weirdly morphed to display as something sort of like "aass nnddeedd" except with the letters mostly superimposed over each other, only slightly offset. Below that begins about two pages of conditional text, turned on, in which the ghosting is vertical. It's as though a paper sheet was run through a printer twice, a little vertically offset the second time so that you see each line ghosted 2-3 millimeters above another copy of the same text. The problem persist on printing and also on PDF creation. There is something funky with a graphic-containing frame nearby: When I turn on borders it shows a double line for its bottom border. There is also an "end of document" character floating about nearby and I have a feeling that this is normally impossible (there is another end-of-document character at the true end of the document ten pages later). I'm having trouble deleting the text. The pages before and after this section look ok. Am I hosed with a corrupt file or might there be hope? Seem to have some relief washing via MIF, but wanted to ask you experts. It won't let me delete the offending section to paste in from the washed file. Thanks for any advice. Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 7.2 Not Responding on New PC
Thanks again to those who've offered constructive assistance with my FrameMaker 7.2 "Not Responding" issue-and to Gillian for considerately alerting me of my backwardness and future unemployability. I actually AM considering an upgrade to the current FrameMaker version, as it does perform better for a particular conversion I may need to run more frequently soon. But basically version 7.2 has been a work horse that has met our needs well. I have nothing but respect for it. I'd like to suggest that this particular thread has run its course and should end. It seems to have become a vehicle for brow-beating. Time for other people's topics, I think! Thanks, Robert. More pieces of the puzzle. I do remember turning off Aero for my "old/good" computer's FrameMaker a few years ago (though I can't remember why), but have not done so on my "new/bad" computer. I will now. ___ This message is from the Framers mailing list Send messages to framers@lists.frameusers.com Visit the list's homepage at http://www.frameusers.com Archives located at http://www.mail-archive.com/framers%40lists.frameusers.com/ Subscribe and unsubscribe at http://lists.frameusers.com/listinfo.cgi/framers-frameusers.com Send administrative questions to listad...@frameusers.com
Re: [Framers] Framers Digest, Vol 120, Issue 2
Some clarification, since David Millis's bingo suggestion came to me off-list: Ending the DWM.exe process in Task Manager allowed me to recover from my FrameMaker 7.2's "Not Responding" state here in the Computer Museum. Here is David's bang-on advice: From: David Millis [mailto:david.mil...@drakesoftware.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 02, 2016 8:29 AM To: Kevin Ryan <kevin.r...@systemsandsoftware.net> Subject: FrameMaker 7.2 Not Responding on New PC Hi Kevin. I've had a similar setup and issue that you have for several years now. The hanging problem seems to manifest itself when I hold the mouse down for a while (undetermined amount of time but longer than just a click) and dragging to either highlight an area of text or dragging the scroll bar. I've been able to go to the Task Manager, click the Processes tab, find DWM.exe, and end task on that file. Sometimes I've had to end task on it twice. 99.9% of the time, this works. Once I get the screen back, I always follow immediately with a Save, but that's just me. Hope this helps. My company has switched everyone except my department to Windows 10. I have too many programs that would choke on a new OS if I didn't upgrade them. Good luck. Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 7.2 Not Responding on New PC
Thanks to all for the tips. Initially I thought David's first suggestion had it nailed because I had not installed the applicable "7.2 to p158" update from Adobe. My attempt to do so today met with a roadblock "GetDiskSpaceFailed" error. However, I don't think the lack of this update is the issue because my well-functioning old PC (also Windows 7) never had the update either (and it also gives the GetDiskSPaceFailed error today). My bad new and good old PCs are both 64 bit Windows 7 machines. At 16 GB my new PC has twice the memory of my old PC. Funny how two similarly equipped PCs can perform differently. They are side by side as I transition old to new. If the problem persists, I will try the XP mode. Thanks again. [Framers] FrameMaker 7.2 Not Responding on New PC
Hi, After using my older version of FrameMaker on Windows 7 without issues on a Dell Latitude E6430 laptop for several years, my company just replaced my laptop with a new Latitude E6540, also having Windows 7. I've recently begun using the program on the new PC for the first time since initial setup of my fonts, Mif2go, and Character/Paragraph tools. FrameMaker seems to work normally except that 2-3 times a day I can pretty much rely on a "FrameMaker Not Responding" freeze-up hosing my work out of the blue. Is anyone aware of any FrameMaker or Windows tweaks that might help me overcome this problem? RE: Frame vs. Flare for My Needs
Thanks for the warning, Steve. I know Word files can be difficult to manage and easy to abuse. For example, my experience has been that many if not most Word users don't use Word styles properly (assuming they even know they exist). My company provides large-scale Customer Information Systems for individual utility companies. The requestors of Word content in our case are typically reasonably Word-savvy educators/trainer's in either the utility or in partner companies with which we work closely during the project management phase. Your warnings of possible backfires are well noted, though. If I can reach the point of being able to provide Word-equivalent manuals alongside our primary deliverable — Frame-to-PDF guides — I will make a point to qualify that the Word version is being provided as a courtesy, that Word may be inferior to the PDF in some ways, and that my company is not responsible for how the Word content is used. This has been an interesting and informative discussion, but I think there is a tangential issue. Please forgive me if this is inappropriate to your specific circumstances, but I think what is being requested here is a Very Bad Thing. I have been through this sort of loop in the past, with customers requesting manual content in Word 'so that it can be updated by our engineers'. The problems are (at least) fourfold: . Word is unforgiving, and despite a popular belief outside of documentation engineering that anything in Word is easy, requires a high level of Word skills to produce professional output. Word lacks the tightness of control of FrameMaker, and can often behave in an unpredictable fashion, particularly with long and/or complex documents. . Development engineers generally lack documentation engineering skills (a sweeping statement, I know, and not always true, but something to be aware of). They will almost certainly lack advanced Word skills. . It is not impossible that the end result will be poor quality output after editing that still carries your company's details, reflecting badly on you. . Should this occur, it is also not impossible that you maybe called in to sort out the resulting mess, landing you in an unsupported FrameMaker - Word - FrameMaker scenario. Way a ways back, Interleaf used to offer Word round-tripping, but that is all ancient history now afaik. I am only advising caution. -- Steve Save the Date! 2015 Harris Customer Training Conference:http://www1.harriscomputer.com/en/conference/ October 21–23, 2015, Atlanta, Georgia - Atlanta Marriott Marquis. ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Frame vs. Flare for My Needs
Hi, I could use the advice of some Frame veterans on whether a switch from Frame to Flare might be a delusion-inspired wrong turn for me, or possibly the right way to go. My company's primary documentation output is PDF user/training/reference guides authored on FrameMaker 7. Not the current Frame version, I know, but sufficient with our good templates to produce solid, professional-looking documents we're proud of. Other current deliverables include context-sensitive HTML topics produced via Mif2go and a limited number of Process Assistance MS Word topics. These latter are a sort of MS-Word help equivalent that our customers can download from our application, edit if necessary, and even upload back into our application for others if they want to. I create Process Assistance MS-Word topics by cutting from Frame and pasting into Word, followed by manual reformatting (ouch). Our customers (utilities) have been requesting another MS Word output: Editable MS Word versions of our 20-300 page PDF manuals so that they can edit them for their own purposes (such as internal training). Unfortunately, we've been unable to find a workable Frame-to-Word conversion process to this end. I can do manual reformatting to Word in our short Process Assistance topics, but to do it on entire manuals would give me a nervous breakdown. So, with better MS-Word output generation as my primary goal, I've been considering a switch to Flare. Its capability to output in PDF, Word, and HTML seems as though it might ultimately streamline our processes. As I test Flare by my 30-day trial, though, I'm reminded of the many things FrameMaker does really well - things I might be losing if I made the switch: For example, precise page layouts, complex graphics, robust tables. To its credit, Flare seems to offer output versatility, excellent documentation and support, and a lot of Marketing momentum. Am I misguiding myself? Barking up the wrong tree? Thanks for any opinions or comments. RE: Frame vs. Flare for My Needs
Thank you to everyone who commented on my question. Looks like I may have been underestimating the Mif2go program I have already! I did a quick, non-scientific convert to Word comparison two or three years ago of FrameMaker 11 demo vs. Acrobat save as Word vs. Mif2go, and none of them really floated my boat at the time. But having configured Mif2go to generate our online help quite nicely from FrameMaker I did gain a lot of respect for its capabilities. The book describing how to use it is a bit daunting though! Thank you for purchasing a Boeing 747; here are your operating instructions. I'm looking for a Word conversion that's not a Word house of cardsI need something that can be editable and won't frustrate the editor with thousands of extraneous chewing gum formats whose sole purpose is surface look and not re-usability. The Acrobat save as word output was laughable in that it seemed to duplicate the look of our FrameMaker documents perfectly, but simple things like word wrap from line to line and page to page were apparently not thought necessary by Adobe. The documents would explode if you actually tried to change anything in Word. We have a lot of complex graphics in our Frame files: For example, frames containing a screen shot, arrows, text boxes, cross references, etc. (the works). Flare conversion seems to ignore or mishandle any graphic in which the screen shot is not alone in its Frame. My memory is these other programs may also have trouble converting complex graphics. Still, there are a lot of configurable variables in Mif2go that I have not researched deeply. So I will. My Mif2Go version is from 2010. Might an upgrade to Jeremy Griffith's last produced version be beneficial? Is it even available anymore now that Jeremy Has passed? Thank you again everyone!
