Master Page variables and conditional text settings not being imported

2009-07-17 Thread Mark Southee
I'm trying to import the above from one file to the rest of my files in a FM 8
book. All the files are open and the import does not report any errors. However
the import does not work. I've even tried to just one file in the book, with no
joy. Any ideas what is going wrong?

 Suite

Integrated Toolkit for Technical Writers Includes Major Upgrade to

 RoboHelp

 Business Editors/Technology Writers

 SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 2007--Adobe Systems
Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced Adobe(R) Technical
Communication Suite software, a first-of-a-kind, integrated solution
for authoring, managing, and publishing technical information and
training content across multiple formats and languages. Using the
Adobe Technical Communication Suite, technical communicators and
instructional designers can create powerful documentation, eLearning
courses and user assistance programs containing both traditional text
and graphics along with rich media, including Adobe Flash(R) Player
 compatible video and 3D.

The suite includes Adobe RoboHelp(R) 7, a major upgrade to Adobe's

help system and knowledge base authoring tool, as well as Adobe
 FrameMaker(R) 8, Adobe Captivate(R) 3 and Adobe Acrobat(R) 3D Version
8 software. Product and workflow integration and support for rich
media formats -- including Adobe Flash Player compatible video, SWF,
MP3 and AVI files as well as industry standards, such as Adobe
Portable Document Format (PDF), XML and Darwin Information Typing
Architecture (DITA) -- empower authors to deliver compelling
information, save time and reduce discrepancies in content.

Adobe's leadership in the industry puts us in a unique position
to deliver a completely new product, targeted squarely at technical
communicators and instructional designers, said Naresh Gupta, senior
vice president, Print and Classic Publishing at Adobe. The Technical
Communication Suite provides all the tools publishers need to take
technical communication to the next level with dramatically improved
workflows and rich features like video, animations, 3D and Unicode
 support.

 Inside the Technical Communication Suite

Introduced today, RoboHelp 7 delivers major new features enabling
technical communicators to author, manage, and publish engaging
content for embedded help systems and standalone knowledge bases. For
the first time, technical communicators can easily update their online

help systems with information authored in FrameMaker 8, without the
need to re-import files for each update. The new release also adds
Unicode support for publishing in multiple languages.

Automated wizards and topic templates allow users to incorporate
standard and advanced help features, including table of contents,
indexes, glossaries, graphics, sound, video, simulations and
navigation. Authors can generate multiple tables of content and apply
conditional tags, index items, folders, and tailor output for specific

purposes and formats, such as HTML, Adobe PDF and FlashHelp(R).
RoboHelp 7 also supports a Multiple Document Interface (MDI) allowing
easy copy and paste editing across topics. Additional new features
include an updated and customizable user interface, enhancements to
the HTML editor, and improved navigation and search features. For more

 details please visit www.adobe.com/products/robohelp.

Launched in July 2007, FrameMaker 8 is a complete authoring and
publishing tool that combines the simplicity of word processing with
the power of XML. The new version adds support for 3D, DITA, XML and
Unicode. With the integration of Adobe Captivate 3 technical authors
can deliver high-impact information with quizzes, visual product
demonstrations and simulations - all without the need for multimedia
development skills. Acrobat 3D version 8 delivers a complete and more
secure way to collaborate with extended teams on 3D designs via Adobe
PDF documents. Technical communicators can easily manipulate and
incorporate interactive 3D models without having to purchase CAD
 software.

 Pricing and Availability

Adobe Technical Communication Suite will be available for
Microsoft(R) Windows Vista(TM) and Windows(R) XP and is expected to
ship by the end of October 2007 at an estimated price of US$1,599.
Users can upgrade for an estimated price of US$999 if they have prior
 versions

Frame to pdf bookmark problem

2007-06-13 Thread Mark Southee
I've started to get a strange problem when printing to pdf from some
newly created files.

I've got a Chapter Title paragraph style - Chapter:TitleBook, and a
Heading one style - Head:1Book
I have the pdf settings so the Head:1Book tags are indented once from
the Chapter:TitleBook.

However the pdf bookmarks always come out with the Head:1Book headings
above the Chapter:TitleBook heading.

Am on Frame 7.2p158 on WinXP Pro and Acrobat 7 (it's also the same for
Acrobat 8)

When I create a Frame TOC, this has everything in the right order.

I've got other books/files which convert fine with the identical set up.
Any ideas what I could have done wrong?

Frame to pdf bookmark problem

2007-06-13 Thread Mark Southee
Fred, it doesn't seem as straight forward as that. It only seems to
affect the first file in the book structure. I created 2 identical files
(all with the same text flows and connections). Whichever file was at
the top of the book structure, the problem as I described occurred, but
only for that file. Subsequent files where unaffected.

A similar question was asked and answered on-list last week.

The most common cause of the behavior you describe is when the chapter
title is in a separate frame that is not properly connected to the
frame(s) for the main text flow. Check your master pages.

Spelling Checker not checking table titles

Have just noticed (and reproduced) that the spelling checker is not

Hello,

Thanks for the reminder about paste special. Is there something similar
to change for shrink-wrapped images?

When I use ESC + m + p and get a shrink-wrapped image in my anchored
frame the anchored frame settings are "At Insertion Point" and I have to
manually set it for "Below current line, center".

Thanks for any suggestions. I may not thank you immediately; I get the
digest.

This brings up a topic that will affect us soon. My company just merged with a
company on England. They write their manuals the English way (i.e. colour,
theatre etc.) and we write the American way (color, theater). In 2007, I will
be working on a project with them so the docset will be split up between their
local tech writer and me.

So the question is, which English do we standardize on?

Verner,

I believe my copy of FramMaker is the International English one.

When you install it you see a dialog asking you to choose between US English or
International English. I guess you wouldn't see this dialog if you had a
US-only version.

Choosing International English installs A4 versions of the custom templates. I
don't think there's any other difference.

(One extra step I take after installing is to change the Language setting in
maker.ini from USEnglish to UKEnglish - this sets UK English as the default
language in the designers.)

RE: Help Needed Linking by Reference from SourceSafe

2006-12-11 Thread Mark Southee
Hi Roger,

We are on the same set up here (until we move to a DITA based CMS
solution). I'm afraid you can't get SourceSafe to work in the way you
want, due to the locks it puts on files that are checked out. As only
one person can have binary files checked out to their local drives at
any one time, other users would have to wait until they have they have
been checked in, then check them out themselves.

SourceSafe can handle multiple checkouts on ASCII files, but binary
files like graphic and Framemaker files are a no go I'm afraid.

Cheers

Is there a way to keep a folder of graphic files in SourceSafe checked

Hi all,

I'm at the indexing stage of a 400 page book for a product I hadn't
worked with for about 3 years (so no memory of what I indexed before).
The manual has also been totally restructured, and many features
superseded by different ones. Now I'm looking at building the index, and
the 'old', manual way is probably not going to work for me too well.

The minimum I'd like is to see index entries inline. Anything extra is
gravy, but I'm not convinced I do need much extra, so if I can see and
work with entries inline (a View option?) for cheap/free, I'd start
there. But if I have to pay for this feature, can you all recommend a
product that has the best combination of other, extra features for the
price?

I've so far found:

http://www.fsatools.com/ - IXgen (comparatively more costly, lots of
features, but would I use them all?)
http://www.leximation.com/tools/info/markertools.php - Leximation marker
tools, less costly, but I have more trouble seeing the usefulness of
some of the features http://www.siliconprairiesoftware.com/Products.html
-Silicon Prairie index tools, cheapest, but doesn't seem to link
directly into the frame marker system, does some other kind of marker?

Anyway, I realize this is a regular question, so I do appreciate any
time taken to send suggestions. Succinct, bulleted lists would be
sufficient.

Thanks,

There is a pdf in the zip )fm71_usingdita.pdf). There are installation
instructions in that. Could have been a bit more obvious though.
Something like Installation perhaps :-)

Word count question

2006-08-22 Thread Mark Southee
When doing a word count on frame files with lots of conditional text, do
I need to show all to get an accurate figure for all text or does the
word count ignore the conditional text settings?

Yes!

Yes! FrameMaker can't count what it can't see.

RE: Framemaker vs. Flare

2006-08-18 Thread Mark Southee
I used the Beta of Flare as, at the time, RoboHelp had been 'sun
setted' by Macromedia. As a help tool I thought it was good. It's xml
based, which meant no more RoboHelp proprietry kadov tags in the
html/css. The promise of support for DITA in future releases was also
encouraging.

But it's no alternative to Frame!

Of course, now Adobe are making encouraging noises about RoboHelp, so
I'm not in such a hurry to think of an alternative.

Conditional text seems better in the sense that there probably are other
things in the chapter that are conditional, but I've heard there is a
limitation on the amount of conditional text types you can have.

What do most people do for this?

Eps problem

2006-08-10 Thread Mark Southee
I've imported an eps for a cover graphic (full US Letter size) that in
Frame looks horribly pixellated and only displays in black and white.
However, when I pdf it it shows in perfect color, as nature intended.
Are there any settings in Frame I can use to get it to display properly
(I didn't create the eps)? The eps was done in Illustrator on a PC, if
that makes any difference.

Cheers

RE: Eps problem

2006-08-10 Thread Mark Southee
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

As usual, time has been an overriding factor, so I got the originator of
the eps to pdf the cover, which allows me to edit some relevent text
(these were originally graphics).

Not the solution I was after, but pretty eficient ( as long as our
logo's don't change too often!)

It was only on certain UNIX versions of FrameMaker that EPS would be

 Hi Mark

FrameMaker cannot display the eps graphic. It only displays an
included preview. You have to enhance this preview, e.g.
increase the dpi setting, to get a better display (and a bigger
filesize). Look at the settings in Illustrator when saving the graphic

 as eps.
Earlier releases of FrameMaker could display the eps graphs directly,
 when DisplayPostScript was available ...

Eps problem

2006-08-10 Thread Mark Southee
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

As usual, time has been an overriding factor, so I got the originator of
the eps to pdf the cover, which allows me to edit some relevent text
(these were originally graphics).

Not the solution I was after, but pretty eficient ( as long as our
logo's don't change too often!)

Cheers

Mark

It was only on certain UNIX versions of FrameMaker that EPS would be
so-rendered. That was never a feature of FrameMaker either on Macintosh
or Windows.
