[Framers] Leading white space for paragraph formats at the beginning of a text flow

2019-06-30 Thread Peter Kelly
Hi everyone,

I've come across this strange behavior of Frame where if I insert a paragraph
at the beginning of a text flow, Space Before does not seem to be taken into
account. I have to use empty carriage returns to create white space before a
major heading at the beginning of a flow, for example. Am I missing something?
As always grateful for any help received.

Best,
Peter

[Framers] Does the Insert>Image workflow in FM2019 produce an image that is copied or imported by reference?

2019-06-01 Thread Peter Kelly
Hi everyone,

I am using unstructured FM 2019 and am trying out the Insert > Image workflow.
It seems to be copying the image into the document and also seems to maintain a
reference to the location of the image. Any changes I make to the source image
are reflected automatically in my FM document as if the image were imported by
reference. When I use the Insert > Image feature I am not given the choice of
whether I want to copy into the document or import by reference. When I select
the graphic and view Object Properties, it indicates "Imported by Copy." I am
assuming then if I don't want a bloated file I should continue to import by
reference using File > Import > File and selecting Import by Reference.

Thoughts?

Best,
Peter

Re: [Framers] Runaround properties for tables in FrameMaker?

2019-05-22 Thread Peter Kelly
Thanks for the answer. A student of mine wanted to be able to do this to use up
white space. I don't think it's worthwhile really to insert tables into text
boxes since that would disturb the automatic flow of text before and after the
table.

You can't do that using table properties. You could if you created a text frame
and inserted the table inside the frame. If you have standard table
configurations that take up the same space on the page, you could probably save
a text frame somewhere, copy and paste it in, then insert the table.
Or Silicon Prairie has the Autotext plugin which would let you set it up in a
document and insert as needed, frame and table at the same time.

Why are you trying to do this, btw? Is it because your tables aren't as wide as
the page so you want to take advantage of the blank space?

[Framers] Runaround properties for tables in FrameMaker?

2019-05-10 Thread Peter Kelly
Hi Framers,

Have always had good advice from you so am out to test my luck again. Is there
a way of specifying runaround properties for tables? Whenever I have a table in
a main text flow, I am not able to make text runaround the table. I've only
been able to make text precede and follow. Creating a two column layout for
this just seems like a lot of work that would not be re-used. Any advice is
appreciated.

Best,
Peter

[Framers] Formatting source code snippets

2019-04-08 Thread Peter Kelly
Hi everyone,

I have seen variations of this topic in the archives dating from 2007. I was
wondering what strategies FrameMaker 2019 users employ to reproduce code
snippets in API reference guides and the like. I used to format each
indentation with a different style and also used to just copy and paste into a
monotype style to preserve the formatting without having to re-create it in
Frame. Any suggestions or better work methods are much appreciated.

Best,
Peter

Cross-references and text insets

2010-04-21 Thread Peter Kelly
Hi everybody,

We are working with unstructured FM 8 on Vista. I have a chapter which
has several user workflows all of which have one or two procedures that
are common, so I decided to use text insets. At the beginning of each
workflow then I have summaries of all the steps that cross-reference the
procedures. Sometimes the same procedure (a text inset) might be in
several workflows.

All this to say that I have cross-references to the same text inset that
appears in several places in the same container document. I have tried
manually placing the marker inside the text inset file and then
inserting the cross-references from the container document. When I
create the cross-reference I select target paragraphs from within the
current container document. When I update the book file though the page
number of the first text inset seems to be propagated to all the other
cross-references. I thought the whole point of text insets was to reuse
them multiple times even in the same container document if need be. I
guess not if they need to be cross-referenced? Am I doing something
wrong or should I just forget about trying to cross-reference the same
text inset in several places in the same container document?

Best indeed,

Peter Kelly

OT: Adobe TCS2--RoboHelp 8 integration with FrameMaker 9

2009-05-09 Thread Peter Kelly
Hello everybody,

I just tried evaluating the Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2 and
found that RoboHelp 8 in particular did not produce consistent results.
I managed to corrupt every project I created only by continuously making
changes in the style mappings from FM to RH and then regenerating.
Sometimes the TOC would not generate at all. Has anyone been using RH8
and has anyone been able to get good results? If so what are you doing
right? Yes I watched the tutorial Adobe produced on FM9 and RH8, which
helped improve my results but it doesn't change the fact that RH8 seems
unstable.

Best,
Peter

Continuous figure numbering skips a chapter

2008-06-13 Thread Peter Kelly
Hello fine Framers,

For the life of me I can't figure out why my figure numbers are
restarting at every chapter but my table numbers are continuous. The
numbering begins at chapter 1, restarts at chapter 2, and then becomes
continuous at chapter 3. Chapter 1 leaves off at Figure 7 and the first
figure in chapter 3 begins at Figure 8...

The autonumber format for my figure caption is: F:Figure n+: \t
I am running FM 8, and yes I have the latest patcheroos.

All enlightenment is much appreciated,
Peter
