Subject: disappearing numbers from PDF graphics
Hi Orly, Sometimes Frame doesn't handle text, fonts, and numbers placed inside a graphic from Corel, PS, or any graphics program. Here are a couple of things I've tried in this instance. 1.) Import the graphic into Frame, then add the numbers in a text box. This solution depends on where you need the numbers placed. Best is if #'s surround the graphics. 2.) Check the Font size in Corel and make it larger then you want. Reimport then check the PDF for the numbers. Hi RJ, Agreeing with the group here, it's great to have you! I attended the Help Authoring Seminar in Orlando in '02 when you introduced the first version of RH4FM. Never got to try it due to a software purchasing freeze right after I returned from the seminar, (h?) but enjoyed the presentation very much. I must say that I'm delighted Adobe is finally showing care for a terrific product that certainly deserves attention. That mouse wheel question, AGAIN!
Hi Group, Just got a new Dell Dimension 5150 at work. Running Win XP with FM 7.0p579, and using an Wacom Intuos2 Graphics tablet, pen tool, and mouse. Has anyone out there found a driver that can make the mouse wheel work with Frame, with the above, or a similar combination of hardware? If so, could you be so kind and post a link to that driver. Such an annoying little nusance problem. RE: Bullet points
Hi Sonia, A wise, wise teacher once said to me, the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked. ;-) You've gotten great advice so far on your question, and I'd like to add my two cents method if I may. If you are at all familiar with a graphics program like Photoshop, you can make a bullet point exactly as you'd like, then save it in whatever extension you use for your screen captures. That way you can import your custom made bullet point from FileImport over and over again, and shrinkwrap where you'd like. IMHO, this is the fast and easy way, and I've had excellent results with it. To Grant and Roger, thanks so much for your input guys. I've copied both to my personal FrameMaker tip sheet. Is there a way of completely customise bullet points in FrameMaker to the extent of making the actual bullet (but not the text that follows) larger and also to widen the distance between bullet and text that follows? RE: Frame vs. Quicksilver - Please help me save Frame
Hi Paul, I just googled Quicksilver publishing software on Mac OS X. There are tons of articles, but it looks like Mac has some product they labeled Quicksilver too, which impacts the OS itself somehow. I don't think it's the former Interleaf product being discussed, but only had time to just scan a few articles. You'll have to wade through cyberland, and let us know what you find out. Although I'm harnessed to PC at work and home, I'm still interested in Mac. I learned on Mac computers ages ago while working for a community college. It's been ten years since I saw the Interleaf product and I can't remember if it was running on a Mac or PC. I thought that IL was effectively a dead product - web Me too, Bill! But I just Googled Interleaf and learned that Quicksilver is the new brand name for the original Interleaf code. So IL is alive and well, just now known as Quicksilver. Give me FM any day over that IL/Quicksilver product. It's clunky, klugy, and weird in more ways then one, IL that is, imho. POLL: Which method do you use to apply bold and italics?
I'm with Bill here, and it looks like 99% of the pollsters. Character catalog. ALWAYS, and FOREVER. From the beginning of FM use, I've been told by too many Framers that the B and I buttons, or Ctrl B and Ctrl I (aka, inline styles) can really mess you up in ways you don't ever want to know about. So, rather then test the dreaded experience, I've avoided A like the plague, and been successful at avoiding problems, even though I have no idea what the problems might be. Maybe we could start a new thread, the horrors of FM inline styles, and how I survived the experience. ;-) Might be fun, eh? Bill, You're singing to the choir dude. ;-) I planned out a global template for the long term. It's worked well for over four years and some 100+ manuals so far. What you describe as "The benefits" are exactly what I'm reaping as a result. It's a beautiful thing! Certainly worth the little bit of extra development time it took to do. Rita Muller Technical Writer Morrow Technologies Corporation >>And, it takes much less time to do this than you'd think. The benefits? Ability to apply global template updates to all books with no manual intervention beyond applying the template, portability of information, and no need for custom learning of book mechanics from one project to the next. -- Bill Swallow<<
Text with colored background
Is there a possibility in FM to define a character style with a background color? Objective would be to define a character style with a grey background to mean a button in a software to click, for instance... Like in Word when you highlight a text in yellow... has anyone done this before in FM v7.1 on PC? Thanks for your expertise! David ARNOULT Marketing Operations Hi David, You've gotten some great suggestions from the group so far. Since I work with engineers, I've used Bill Briggs' method before (adding a new equation) and it worked well. But, here's my favorite method. Use your graphics tool, Photoshop, PSP, etc. and make the button in that program, save as your preferred file format, and import the graphic. Then shrink wrap (Esc, m, p, I think) the graphic where you want it to live on the page. Sometimes this method creates a bit of a spacing issue, but I usually figure out some kinda work around. Happy Holidays to all the Framers. Such a great group of helpful folks hanging out here.
