RE: Changed Section and Subsection Numbers

2013-06-28 Thread William W. Saylor, PE
Harvey,

I had a similar problem on a ~10 chapter book. One or two of the chapters
would never get the formatting right even though each template was the same
and each chapter had the Format - Document - Numbering (and Page) set
properly. It was only when I would do Book Updates that the formatting and
page sequencing would be properly forced.

It may be as simple as going into the Paragraph tab in the numbering for
that section and changing that to Continue numbering from Previous file
(don't recall the selection exactly).

The numbering is a delicate interaction between a number of settings.
Usually putting your content into the containers provided by the template
(and removing overrides from any of the numbered paragraph tags) will fix
problems. (Of course, that assumes you have a good template.)

It is NOT usually a good idea to start trying this and that setting while
hoping for the best.

Framers: I need your help. In a multi-section book, my section and
subsection numbers in section 2 reverted from 2, 2.1, 2.2, etc. to 1, 1.1,
1.2, etc. I don't know why this happened; I didn't (knowingly) do anything
to this chapter. This section did read 2, 2.1, 2.2 this morning. I went into
Format - Document - Numbering and tried to fix the Chapter, Section, and
Sub-section tabs in Numbering Properties, but nothing is working. Section
2's numbering remains 1, 1.1, 1.2. Luckily, this glitch has not affected the
section and subsection numbers in any of the other chapters in this book. I
could use some step-by-step instructions on how to get the section numbers
to convert back to 2, 2.1, 2.2.

From time to time, files whose pagination was set to Delete Empty Pages have
inexplicably changed to Make Page Count Even, resulting in an extra blank
page at the end of any file with an odd number of pages. This hasn't
happened in a long time--maybe not since I installed FM11--but it reared its
ugly head again today.

Also, changing the Numbering Properties setting to Continue Numbering from
Previous Page in Book doesn't work at all. Not only doesn't the book
renumber on update (despite an alert telling me that book numbers and
document numbers don't agree so Frame is going to use book numbers--at least
that's what I think it means), but on next view the radio button for this
option is deselected and the one for manual page number entry is
re-selected. (Yes, I'm certain I selected the right radio button, clicked
Set, and saved each file before this happened.)

Seems odd that pagination is not behaving on two counts at the same time.

Thanks for any help.

I am using FM10 on Win7 writing a multi-chapter technical book. Is there a
simple way to attach a following caption to an anchored frame when I let the

auto-referencing to the Captions extensively.

cannot generate PDF

2013-02-14 Thread William W. Saylor, PE
Bodvar, Art, and many others

For whatever value it may have, and to thank all who helped,
the source of my Adobe PDF problem was:

-It was not one of the several imported graphics

-In the text of the document there was an opening ?(? in a variable
that somehow was coded as Vijaya font. It was not visible and, as a legal FM
font, caused no errors in the font pod.

-I saved the offending page and ?bisected? the text until I found
the nugget that would not print.

-I assume there are some number of legal FM fonts that might give
the same error.

Thanks again,

Bill

Hi Bill,

The most usual thing here, as most have suggested, is that a corrupt graphic
on or next to the problematic pages is causing this. However, as the error
message mentions Encoding, I would also look at the fonts on these pages. Is
there any text (or an entity for holding text) on these pages that could be
using a corrupt font, not used earlier in the document or a letter from such
font not used earlier? You might have to look at the MIF file to see this.

Hope you find the cure. :-)

RE: cannot generate PDF

2013-02-13 Thread William W. Saylor, PE
Art,

This is FM10 on a WIN7 machine. I am using the Save As to
generate the PDF. I could print the chapter successfully to my local HP
OfficeJet and every other chapter works just fine making a PDF. The page in
question has about five images (MathType equations come in as images) but
they look no different from the hundreds of other images. I think I am using
the Adobe that comes with FM. I ultimately need PDF files for the publisher
and every other chapter works fine.

A few others in the forum are likely to disagree but I think it sucks.
:-)

There have always been issues with it over the years and releases, so much
so that I just quit using it myself (still have to use it to debug for
others) in the FM7 time frame because it was too buggy. It has always used
an arcane interface that, when it works, uses a totally different method of
specking and creating the PDF file than printing to the Acrobat logical
printer instance. It is much improved in the 11 release, but I still haven't
gotten into the habit of using it at all.

I follow the KISS principle and just print to the Acrobat printer. It's more
controllable and more stable, IMHO than its evil twin.

Bottom line is if the SaveAs PDF isn't working for you, try printing to the
Acrobat printer instead; it's become a basic debugging step to determine if
the problem is in the output generation or in the files.

Cheers,
Art

Cheers,
Art

Thanks for your additional insight, Scott! Seems logical. Those who need to
use FM10 until a patch is available (if indeed needed) can install FM11 as a
trial version, and save as FM10 when FM10 can be used again.

When various FM10 bugs were discussed in the list a while back, FM11 was
mentioned as the patch for FM9/10 (for a fee), but that's a different story
;-)

[ Two years ago or so I encountered the licensing expired problem when
installing TCS2 on a new computer. The only real fix then, after spending
many chat/phone hours with all kinds of solution attempts, was to get a
new serial number from Adobe's representatives in Israel at the time. The
old serial number was absolutely valid on the previous computer or when
tested in other computers with de-activation. ]

astrological symbols as fonts

2012-10-30 Thread William W. Saylor, PE
I am working on an astrodynamics test with the usual quantity of
mathematical equations, Greek symbols, etc. I use MathType as an equation
editor since it has more extensive capabilities than the FM equation editor.

Traditionally there are several symbols used to represent the planets,
earth, sun, moon, Ares, etc that are basically astrological symbols. I could
use these symbols in FM directly if I could find / make them.

1. Does anyone know of a font that includes these symbols?

2. How hard is it to create such symbols and be able to use them in FM
(particularly as subscripts)?

Subject: FM10 - font error

I am using FM10 on a book project and have inherited some older (FM7?) files
that were exchanged using the .mif format. Somewhere there must be a "Times"
font called out, which is no longer available. When I open a single chapter
there is no problem - just an error message saying Times New Roman is used
instead. However, when I put the chapters in a book and use the
document>formatting>number command to set each chapter I get an error that
FM10 can do nothing because of the previous error.

I have searched the document, all tags etc. and can find no reference to or
use of Times. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Bill
