Please forgive me in advance! :)

Subject: English will become official European Language.

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be
the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the
other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English
spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan
that would become known as 'Euro-English'.

In the first year, 's' will replace the soft 'c'. Sertainly, this will make the
sivil servants jump with joy. The hard 'c' will be dropped in favour of 'k'.
This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome
'ph' will be replaced with 'f'. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expected to reach
the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben
a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent 'e' in the language is
disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as Replasing 'th' with 'z'
and 'w' with 'v'.

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary 'o' kan be dropd from vords containing 'ou'
and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl.

Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi TU understand
ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru. Und efter ze fifz yer, ve
vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

If zis mad you smil, pleas pas on to oza pepl.

Re: Thought for the day

2010-05-28 Thread Steve Rickaby
Clearly we have a great range of international English expertise on this group:
the thought of a collaborative dictionary of phraseology comes to mind. It
would be very useful for those like me who often have to work in another
English dialect: what to say, what not to say.

Many years ago I was slightly involved in a European collaborative project to
research how software could be designed for easy localisation, and there are a
great many more pitfalls than one might imagine.

I cannot resist a little levity for a Friday. My favourite story was about the
Jamaican gentleman living in London who addressed his electricity bill only to
'Degenerate Bawd'. Allegedly it was correctly delivered.

Re: Thought for the day

2010-05-27 Thread Tori Muir
I found 'nice' to be most troubling after having married a Brit. In that
US it's a bit of a limp compliment, but in the UK it carries stronger
positiveness. Did you like the curry? It was nice, thanks has a
totally different effect in the two dialects, especially to her who
cooked the curry!

And it never fails to crack me up when I hear him say I could just
murder a glass of water! or they do a gorgeous crab salad -- in
Amurrican English, we don't use murder or gorgeous that way.

RE: Thought for the day

2010-05-27 Thread Mary Sheahan
An American friend (male) studied for a year in London.
Apparently he nearly spilled his beer when an attractive female used the phrase
knock me up to mean stop by and knock on my door.
Parallel construction to ring me up -- but drastically different than the
American meaning!

I saw a similar sign in a Glasgow
restaurant that said, This door is alarmed. I thought,
 How can you tell?

Because English is used (quite) a bit differently in the
UK, I kept chuckling about the signs I saw while I was in
Scotland. I knew what they meant, but the North American
meaning was quite different than the UK meaning.
