RE: FM 10 - crashes and PDF bookmark settings

2012-04-05 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi,

At least the paragraphs which are used for bookmarks could
be set for each file individually already in FrameMaker 8. I had
used this to add the GroupTitlesIX paragraph format solely in
the index file to get the single characters as bookmarks (and
similarly for the glossary headings). There was no need to add
this paragraph format to the first file in the book. This behaviour
did not change with FrameMaker 10 (which I use for a week now).

I figure that the same holds true for the Tags tab. I do not know
which setting in which file (or the whole book) takes precedence
in the Settings and the Links tab.

The way the bookmarks settings works is:

o You can set the paragraphs for bookmarks in each single file.
But you can also select all files in the book and set this for all
  files.
(I do not remember which paragraphs are shown, if you select just
the book. There are not all available formats shown of all files in the
book and also not the formats of the first file in the book. I just tested
this with a file with only 3 paragraph formats as first file.)

o Bookmarks are then created as set in each file.

This behaviour was already explained in detail some months ago either
here or in the Adobe FrameMaker forum.

Best regards

Winfried

2012-04-05 Thread Robert Lauriston
In my observation, with FM10, when the focus is on a book file and I
select Format Document PDF Setup, the Include Paragraphs and
Don't Include lists on both the Bookmarks and Tags tabs include all
tags from all .fm files, regardless of which file(s) I currently have
selected in the book.

However, when I click Set, any changes are applied only to the selected file(s).

So if you want the settings to be consistent across the book, you
should select all files before selecting Format Document PDF

Ah, that does explain my similar experience. I thought it was just me
doing something wrong. I'm in FM9 now and have discovered that you do
indeed need to select all files in the book and then set the job
options. If I remember correctly, in FM8, all you had to do was
select the book file.

And I think that you need to have ALL of the paragraph tags that you
designate as bookmarks defined in that first file. It may be voodoo,
but I couldn't get the bookmarks I needed, despite having defined
them in the PDF job options, until I had planted all of the
appropriate paragraph tags in that first file (the coverpage in this case).

I've been mostly happy with FM 10 since I upgraded a couple of months ago from
FM 8. A question and a note, though.

Question

It seems like FM 10 does not save my PDF bookmark settings. I can't recall ever
seeing this before, and it's really a pain in the neck. I select my Adobe PDF
printer, go in and set up my bookmarks by para style and the levels, select
None as the level to display, click Set, save the book (and even when it does
not crash), go right back in and the settings are gone. What gives???

The settings do hold long enough for me to print to .ps, so I can distill, as
long as I don't go back into the PDF setup. Anyone else seeing this? Any
solutions?

If this is a new feature, I hope we can get an update to remove it. It's most
annoying when you're in final production stages and have to generate the PDF
multiple times to get the final version.

Note

I started seeing FM crash when I saved a book. I found that I'm not alone. I
think it was related to having track changes turned on. After I turned it off
and accepted all changes, it seems to have stopped.

Does anyone have a definitive solution for this? Adobe, are you listening? This
is really annoying. I like to use track changes, and I like to be able to save
my book without crashing.

Thanks for any ideas!

FM 10 - crashes and PDF bookmark settings

2012-04-01 Thread LGLists
FM 10
Win 7 64 bit

I've been mostly happy with FM 10 since I upgraded a couple of months ago
from FM 8. A question and a note, though.

Question

It seems like FM 10 does not save my PDF bookmark settings. I can't recall
ever seeing this before, and it's really a pain in the neck. I select my
Adobe PDF printer, go in and set up my bookmarks by para style and the
levels, select None as the level to display, click Set, save the book (and
even when it does not crash), go right back in and the settings are gone.
What gives???

The settings do hold long enough for me to print to .ps, so I can distill,
as long as I don't go back into the PDF setup. Anyone else seeing this? Any
solutions?

If this is a new feature, I hope we can get an update to remove it. It's
most annoying when you're in final production stages and have to generate
the PDF multiple times to get the final version.

Note

I started seeing FM crash when I saved a book. I found that I'm not alone. I
think it was related to having track changes turned on. After I turned it
off and accepted all changes, it seems to have stopped.

Does anyone have a definitive solution for this? Adobe, are you listening?
This is really annoying. I like to use track changes, and I like to be able
to save my book without crashing.

Thanks for any ideas!

FM 10 crashes

2011-08-30 Thread Scott Penney
I've never seen this problem in FM 10 before. I had upgraded to 10 earlier this
summer, but only began to have problems in the past week.

The version of FM is 10.0.1.408, installed on a Windows 7 64-bit machine. I
have 8 GB RAM with an Intel Core 2 processor.

Whenever I open an FM file, whether created in FM 8, 9, or 10, FM hangs after a
few minutes, during which the menu bar disappears. At this point, I can only
close the program. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but this did not
work. First I upgraded on the network. But reinstalling, I upgraded from the
website. In neither case did I use a disc. I don't know if that's a problem.
There was an Adobe forum message in which the crash problem was solved by the
CD reinstall.

On the Adobe forum I came across another posting that described a similar
failure, with the added advice that the registry should be cleaned. But I
don't know the exact steps for cleaning the registry.
