Re: Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is not repeated for further pages of the table

2010-07-20 Thread Avraham Makeler
Hi all,

Sorry I couldn't get back to this sooner.

I read the responses. Since there is a saying in my local culture that says
*They* are allowed, and *you* are not, which I interpret as meaning that
the individual has to abide by the opinion of the majority (and even maybe
also realign his head)...

... I therefore humbly bow my head to the large majority opinion.

Actually ... it's not the $60 that's the problem. There is going to be a
simply a practical problem of what will probably turn out to be the $60
multiplied up many times. I am not used to living with deficiencies and
bugs. In Word, I program my own solutions. In FM, for the time being, I am
going to have to pay a lot of money I don't have, or else justify
the deficiencies to my clients.

OTOH, a VBA Word macro can be written by script kiddies in a few minutes.

I assume this is a joke. I have written whole applications and tools in Word
VBA that took many days. Of my favorite is an auto linker, allowing you to
type in any section name or legal (dot) number and, at a click, the tool
replaces it with a a cross-reference to the section name or legal number.
Another is a package that provides a stable alternative to Word's list
numbering, but using SEQ fields.

This joke reminds me of the one about Pascal programmers that goes like
this: What's the difference between Pascal programmers and assembly
language programmers. Assembly language programmers play rugby, whereas Pascal
programmers play tiddlywinks...

Thanks,

  - avi

I'll just add one more kick to this very dead horse, from
the perspective of a toolmaker. Frame plugins like Rick
makes are not trivial. They require a very experienced
C/C++ programmer who knows *all* the nasty little bits of
the FDK that are undocumented, as well as the massive part
that is documented. Development time for this is not short.
And market size is around 1% of that for a Word plugin.

OTOH, a VBA Word macro can be written by script kiddies

A price of $60 for a Frame plugin is very, very low.

A price of $20 for a Word macro, euphemistically called

RE: Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is not repeated for further pages of the table

2010-07-02 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Avraham,

The appropriate adage here is time is money. If you have a lot of tables
to manipulate by hand, it can easily take hours of repetitive, tedious work.
Many TableCleaner users have recouped their investment with a single job. Of
course, value is relative; for some, $60 is expensive; for others, it is a
bargain.

Also, to clarify: Table cleaner is o-n-e utility but it has 5 categories
of functions.

RE: Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is not repeated for further pages of the table

2010-07-02 Thread Sharon Burton
I've used Rick's Table Cleaner and it's worth much more than $60. With a few
clicks, you can clean every table in a Frame file that you've imported from
Word. The tool paid for itself in the first hour I used it.

I was importing 100+ long Word files into Frame for a conversion project for
a client. I imported, ran Table Cleaner on each file and all the tables were
fixed. It took about 3 minutes.

To fix them manually (at that time in that version of Frame) involved
destroying each table and rebuilding it manually. Since there were tables
about every 3 pages... Yes, the tool is wonderful and worth every penny.

If you are selling your utilities for less, perhaps they are not as powerful
or as immediately timesaving. Or perhaps you could charge more and didn't
think of it. But Table Cleaner is worth every cent.

RE: Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is not repeated for further pages of the table

2010-07-02 Thread Bernard Aschwanden (Publishing Smarter)
Having had to do this task and stare at a screen for hours, I found the price
to be totally fair. Basically if it saves me even an
hour a month then that's 12 per year. So, for $5/hour I get a tool that does it
all in seconds. Plus I own the tool. So the next
year it's free. Or I may decide that I only paid $2.50/hour. Regardless, I'd
like to think my time is worth more than $5/hour.

Factor in sanity saved and you come out way ahead. Yup, I pay $60 for o-n-e
utility (boy that takes time to type ;) and then I make
it back by using the saved time to either do billable work, other work, or to
just enjoy sitting in my backyard for an extra hour.

RE: Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is not repeated for further pages of the table

2010-07-02 Thread Combs, Richard
I second -- third? -- what Sharon and Bernard said. In well under an hour,
Table Cleaner lets you do what would take all day to do manually. How much is
an hour of your time worth?

Values are subjective. If you never import from Word and never need to make
global changes to a bunch of tables (including native FM tables), $60 is too
much. But if you do those things, even just from time to time, Table Cleaner is
a bargain because it saves you so many hours of tedious work.

I expected there to be a simple Properties setting controlling this, but I
could not find one. I tried opening the FM documents in FM 8 to see if such

You save your FM document as a MIF file, and then load it into Word's VBA
environment (yes...Word - we just want to use the Word API's powerful string
processing facilities), and run Stephen's VBA program.

Ok, great - but it didn't work. So I debugged it a bit, and found that it
used a search string that was not quite accurate, so the searches did not
work. Ok - so I fixed that, and ran it again. Then I found that it started
to update the MIF by adding header rows, but then it hung the PC.

OK - so it probably works, but maybe it was written for a different version
 of FM and/or MIF.
So is there a different solution for this?
Or does somebody have a debugged version of this VBA program? (For FM 7.2.)

Indeed, Rick's TableCleaner plug-in is what you need. You can even batch
convert body rows to heading rows and then select the option to only convert

Re: Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is not repeated for further pages of the table

2010-07-01 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
You just have to add a header row (TableAdd Rows or ColumnsAdd 1 Row
To Heading).

Unlike Word, you can't tell Frame that a row is (or is not) a heading
row. If you want a heading row, you have to add one. If you don't want a
heading row, you have to delete it.

Also, when a table is imported from Word, it may have custom ruling
which you may not want. Select the entire table, then select
TableCustom Ruling and ShadingFrom Table (to all sides of cell)Apply.

Re: Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is not repeated for further pages of the table

2010-07-01 Thread Avraham Makeler
 Rick Quattro's Table Cleaner plugin

Thought I would sleep on this before responding... well here goes...

$60 for just o-n-e utility...? $60 is the price of many complete
applications -- ok not an MS app or an Adobe app, but an app. I have written
a number of complete Word VBA programs and until now it never occured to me
to ask more than about $20. Oh well ... Supply Demand... if it sells... it
sells...

 Hi Avi,
Rick Quattro's Table Cleaner plugin makes short work of this. Simply select
the row or rows you want to repeat, and choose Table Convert Select Rows
 Body to heading Rows.
Short of that, you might try a) applying a table format to the imported
table, and b) add a header row (Table Add Rows or Columns Add a Header a
Header Row), c) copy and paste the original cells into that, then delete the
 original row.
