I can't speak for all versions, but in 7.0-7.2 at least, this is how epses
are rendered on.screen---as shaded boxes. Rest assured however that they
distill brilliantly.

The EPS needs to be saved with a low-res preview. Open the EPS in
Photoshop or whatever editor you use to create them and save them WITH
preview. You'll then see a preview of the image in FrameMaker.
