FrameMaker still uses whatever your default printer is.
SetPrint and the other Sundorne Communications utilities haven't been
updated in 15 years. I'm not certain the company is even in business
anymore, although the website still exists. They even have a zip file with
the source code, and yes,
Your machine is kind of light weight for intensive publishing. I'd
definitely try to boost the RAM.
Also, you don't say if the files are all local or on a LAN/server
somewhere, which will create another bottleneck if they have to be opened
locally, which probably involves some virus checking.

Yes, find the bottleneck first, if possible, then upgrade to fix the known
problem. In the last century, one new FM UNIX release was extremely
sluggish in any operation that involved printers. Of course, formating FM
text for the screen involves the printer. The culprit turned out to be a
routine
Don't spend money upgrading any of the hardware without using Task
Manager to see where the bottleneck is.

Hi Alison,
FrameMaker creates PDF files via Save As PDF with its own engine.
The printer is not involved. This works very well.
There can be requirements that you create the PDF via Distiller,
but this is also automated. You can still use Save As PDF.
You do not need to print to a PostScript
FrameMaker 2017 was on 32 bit architecture and FrameMaker 2019 & FrameMaker

if you have 64 bit OS, I suggest you to upgrade to latest version or try out
the latest version on t 30 days trial, Make sure
Actually, 32-bit or 64-bit, regardless of machine specs, FrameMaker is a
performance dog. It's horrible... and I say that as someone who loves the
software itself... but its resource utilization is GawdAwful(tm).
Not just during rendering phases, but Frame polls all opened pods/dialogs with
I haven't used Frame since mid-2017 but I'm about to install it for my
current job.
I seem to remember that there were some issues using unstructured FrameMaker
with the built-in (headless distiller?) PDF tool such that a certain
checkbox had to be selected at install and Frame and Acrobat had

It's the latest version.
I'm sure I saw "2020" in the download title although I wasn't aware that a
2020 version was available (it's a subscription through an affiliated office
in Austria).

In that case, you don't need to worry - there's an entirely new PDF generator
in FM2020 & SetPrint won't work with FM2020 anymore.

And I take it from your reply that the SetPrint issue still exists but
SetPrint hasn't (yet?) been updated to handle Frame 2020...
