Re: [Framers] Style mapping: Word to FrameMaker 2017

Alternatively, look into Silicone Prairie Software. He has a reasonably
priced plug-in that will make a listing of your paragraph tags from a
template and remove all non-list tags from your target document. I use
this plug-in, the Character, and Table plug-ins to manage importation of
documents from Word into FrameMaker.

That should get rid of any of the excess formats. (I've done this in the past

Re: [Framers] Style mapping: Word to FrameMaker 2017

2017-12-14 Thread Duszynski, Jim K
I believe if you use option 3, and have text as a paragraph format, you can
assign all those stray styles to the text pgf. And once you do, you can save a
preset file of the mapping you performed. As we know because Word saves every
variation of style, you will always have mapping to perform. But at least you
can increasingly build the preset file.

To complete the import, the Silicon Prairie plugin, Paragraph Tools, is an
effective tool to keep, delete and map document pgfs. Tools are also available
for character and tables.

Not that I have come across--unless I'm missing something obvious.

While I appreciate the new Word import feature (it has been in InDesign for
some time), it works best if one is working with experienced Word users who
know how to use styles properly. That is not always the case.

The problem is when the Word file comes in with a bunch of unwanted styles
(sometimes not even used in the document). Granted, one could import those
styles and rename & reformat them or map them to existing styles, but that
isn't how I like to work in many cases. A simple solution is for Adobe put back
in an option to import as plain text (like the previous import dialog used to
have).

Option 1: a working "solution" is to open Word and copy the text. In
FrameMaker, use the Paste Special menu and choose text.
Option 2: save the Word file as text and import.
Option 3: go with the flow and map the Word styles to Frame styles, but that
works best if all writers use styles consistently.

Hi All,

In my bucket of Framemscripts, I have one called
ImportandFormatWordDocs.fsl. It's been a long while since I have used this
script, but this coupled with Silicon Prairie's tool might get you what you
want much faster. Let me know if you are interested in receiving a copy of
this script.

Tangential to your issue, but SiliconPrairie's Paragraph Tools plug-in has
the ability to delete all unused paragraph formats. I have found this very
useful for cleaning up all the mess that Word import leaves behind.

   1. Map all formats. ;-)

   2. Leverage the ability to search for the created formats to apply
appropriate styles; then delete the now-unused, spurious styles with
your plugin of choice or by hand.

Disabling that feature would lead to what? The unmapped styles all
getting Default Para Text...? I wouldn't want that because at least an
ad-hoc, spurious style displays something that might tell you how to
   apply a proper style.

[Side note: Isn't there a mapping row for "unmapped" or "all others" in
the Ref Pages? Or am I conflating FM with another tool stack?]
