Are you setting the numbering properties for each chapter file? You can do
this at book level, by clicking on the filename then going to Format ->
Document -> Numbering. Or you can open the chapter file, go to the same spot
to set the numbering properties, then set the book-level properties as "Read
from File". In either case, all chapters except the first need "Continue
from previous file".

What I can't remember is whether 5.5 has a "Chapter" tab in the Numbering
dialog, or whether it's all done from the "Paragraph" tab.

Grope around in that general direction, and you should find what you need.

Help, Autonumber chapters in Frammaker 5.5 ...

2006-05-07 Thread Peter Gold
In FrameMaker releases prior to 6, chapter auto-numbering can only be
done with paragraph-based auto-number formats, in combination with
the book window and File > Generate/Update. (FrameMaker 6 introduced
the <$chapnum> book-wide building block, although the older method
also worked.)

For detailed information on auto-numbering in FrameMaker 5.5, consult
the online help, user manual, and search the archives of
frameusers.com, and the Adobe.com FrameMaker User-to-User forums.
Also, search Google for framemaker tutorials.

You're correct! This suggestion applies to FrameMaker releases
beginning with 6.

Obvious question:
How do I get Chapters to autonumber?
(Files or chapters auto number for pagination OK (???)

As one person indicated:
Format->Document->Numbering
and Numbering Dialog box comes up...
But this Dialog Box only effects Page Numbering,
there is nothing there for Chapter Numbering.

Select Paragraph Designer->Numbering Tab

allows setting of Chapter Title (and other defined headers)
via drop down list box.
So selecting Chapter, allows one to add building blocks
such as to Chapter title formating to increment
Chapter title (in Book file)...
