Coverting Word docs to Structured Framemaker

2009-05-11 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Tracy

I don't know whether your "structured Frame" files will be DITA XML topics?
If so, you can use MIF2Go to convert your Word docs to DITA, via FM. The
process goes like this:

   1. Open your Word file in FrameMaker and save it as an FM file.
   2. Choose File > Save using MIF2Go > DITA.
   3. Specify the conversion settings in the mif2htm.ini file, for example
   Heading*=title
Don't worry about the name mif2htm.ini; you will get a conversion to DITA
XML topics, not to HTML. Your FM book will even be converted to a ditamap!
   4. Go!
   5. If necessary, fine-tune your conversion settings (using the Help file)
   and run the conversion again.

Cheers

Coverting Word docs to Structured Framemaker

2009-05-11 Thread Jurgen Willems
Hello Tracy,

We've got a lot of expertise in converting word docs to medium-neutral
sources. What we always do is a transformation outside framemaker. We
transform the WordML (Word's XML scheme) to the disired DTD or scheme with a
XSLT conversion.

The way to go there is the same as you know it, only the technology used is
different. You first make an analysis of the source files and map this to
the disired DTD (structure). The result will be a conversion table that you
need to translate to XSLT syntax (the most difficult part of the job).

Hope this helps.

Hello everybody,

I just tried evaluating the Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2 and
found that RoboHelp 8 in particular did not produce consistent results.
I managed to corrupt every project I created only by continuously making
changes in the style mappings from FM to RH and then regenerating.
Sometimes the TOC would not generate at all. Has anyone been using RH8
and has anyone been able to get good results? If so what are you doing
right? Yes I watched the tutorial Adobe produced on FM9 and RH8, which
helped improve my results but it doesn't change the fact that RH8 seems
unstable.

Best,
Peter

Re: Coverting Word docs to Structured Framemaker

2009-05-11 Thread l_c_smalley
Tracy,

At my previous job, I was heavily involved in exactly this type of work for a
variety of clients.  This included designing templates, conversion tables and
even developing custom tools (using FrameMaker's Development Kit [FDK]) to
automate repative tasks.  Our firm processed hundreds of thousands of pages
from Word to structured Frame and generated richly linked (TOCs and
cross-references) SGML, XML and PDF as outputs.

The short answer is yes, the process is essentially the same after importing
the Word file into FrameMaker, as that converts the Word source to an
unstructured FM document.

The biggest caveat is that the Word documents should use well-defined styles
consistently rather than the all too frequent practice of ad-hoc formatting
(just because it looks like a Heading 1 does not mean it it really tagged as a
Heading 1), so cleanup is essential,
either in Word (via macros perhaps) or in Frame (custom FDK tools,
FrameScript, etc) and even in both applications before applying a conversion
table to get the greatest success.

Re: Coverting Word docs to Structured Framemaker

Cheers
