Re: Framemaker to PDF - Linking Problem
If you don't have the book file open, FrameMaker creates PDF links to the PDF files named after the file (that is, it creates links to file_name.pdf rather than to book_name.pdf). This makes sense. After all, FrameMaker has no way of knowing which book the file belongs to if the book is not open. I'm not sure what happens if you have two different books open that reference the same file. Framemaker to PDF - Linking Problem
Thanks to all for your answers! Doug ... so in other words, in the following example: "gotolink ../CHAP02/ER_SEC02_03.fm:sec231" (Where sec231 is a newlink marker in that document...) Frame would creake a link in the pdf file to a file named: "ER_SEC02_03.pdf "? Would it do anything with the newlink marker (would it try to find that marker in the document for the exact link location?... ie - would it create the link to the newlink marker "sec231" within the ER_SEC02_03.pdf ?) -Amy On Tue Jul 10 16:14 , Doug sent: >If you don't have the book file open, FrameMaker creates PDF links to the PDF >files named after the file (that is, it creates links to?file_name.pdf rather >than to book_name.pdf).? Framemaker to PDF - Linking Problem
Yes, that's what it would do. If you create the file-specific PDF file, any newlink markers defined in FM should be defined in the PDF file. You have to be careful about your files' directories when you do this. If your files are in separate directories, the links will expect the PDF files to be in separate directories, too -- directories that mimic your source directory structure. This probably isn't what you want. To get around all this, I generally create a production-specific directory, and create production-specific books (which can reference the working files). Then, you simply open up all those books, and create the PDF files. Framemaker to PDF - Linking Problem
Hi, We work on large sets of documentation that require links between various Chapters, Sections, Books, etc. Our final deliverables are in PDF format. When creating the PDF file for a specific book, we have found that for some reason, we need to open ALL of the other book files that are linked to the current book in order for the links to work. For example, if I'm printing the PDF for Section 5.3 book, and it contains links to sections 2.3 and 7.8, we need to open the book files for 2.3 and 7.8 to print or sometimes the links don't work. An example of the link verbage we are using in the marker is: gotolink ../CHAP02/ER_SEC02_03.fm:sec231 Is this typical ?Since they are relative links, I really don't understand why Framemaker would require all of the linked files to be open when creating the book. Well, since no one else has responded... yes, for the links to work, you do need to have all the destination files open when you build the book PDF. However, I don't know _why_. I suspect it's because FM passes specific (a named location) location info into Acrobat that is somehow checked for validity, but I don't _know_ that.
