Sorry to not give you answers to your specific questions, but you may want to consider changing to another system to make it simple. I believe that with a small number of users, free on-line versions of Git hosted solutions are perhaps the best way to go. For example, check out Github (www.github.comhttp://www.github.com) and BitBucket (www.bitbucket.orghttp://www.bitbucket.org) - BitBucket is free for up to 5 users with unlimited repositories (no file limits). We are using unstructured Frame and will mainly use SharePoint as a repository for our Frame, RoboHelp, Word, and associated graphics files. We are currently on FrameMaker v10, but will be moving to v12 soon. I have the connection set up in CMS | Configuration Manager and it seems to be working OK, VPN willing. Any words to the wise from people who have already done this? Our needs are pretty basic - IT wants us off StarTeam and we just want an accessible repository that a small number of writers (1-3) can easily get to. So far, it seems a little slower than StarTeam and there is a 100 file upload limitation. Several of our books have more than 100 referenced graphics files. SharePoint doesn't seem to want to let me drag and drop folders, only files. This will make for a tedious transition, unless I can find a way around this limitation. Hi Zaeem, Thanks for replying. I'll look at these comparisons, but I fear the PTB are pushing this change. I'm not sure Doc will be allowed to go a separate way. RE: FrameMaker and SharePoint
Hello Lester I used SharePoint in a previous life. No problems with it as regards FrameMaekr, except that: 1. Version control for FM binaries consists of storing copies, not diffs. 2. If I remember correctly, SharePoint does not search the content of FM files (though it does Office documents and PDF, I believe). 3. There is a cryptic error message that pops up when file paths exceed 255 characters, so don't nest your files too deeply and keep folder/file names short. Hope this helps. RE: FrameMaker and SharePoint
I think many Content Management systems have problems in 'diffing' binary files, so they don't try - they just save complete copies with each 'change'. We previously used Documentum/FrameLink and that was how that system operated also. We have recently installed SharePoint in our company and I have just started playing around with it. I checked in a whole (unstructured) book, along with a graphics sub-folder. If I check out the book only, the version increments. I can then edit the book by clicking on it in Sharepoint. I can then open the chapters etc normally - just as if they were on a conventional file server. Cross references and referenced graphics work normally. If I change a chapter file, SharePoint recognizes that and checks the chapter file out. However, it does not increment the chapter version then or when I check it back in. Effectively the checkout/checkin operation just becomes a flag and the system behaves like a 'dumb' file server. If you want the chapters to version, then you have to check them out first, Regards, Micheal O'Laoghaire BSS Line of Product Documentation Comverse Inc. Cambridge, MA.
