RE: Import by Reference Question/Bug ?
"Heroic open" is an escape-key command that causes FrameMaker to ignore any of the conditions that normally cause warnings or messages during the open process, and therefore allows you to open files that have certain minor forms of corruption. The command is Esc, o, H (meaning Escape, lower-case O, and capital H pressed *in sequence* rather than in combination). BTW, you can find many postings about heroic open in the FrameUsers archive by using the Google query string "heroic open" site:frameusers.com (where the quotes *are* part of the quety string) -Fred Ridder > Subject: RE: Import by Reference Question/Bug ? > Date: Wed, 19 Aug 2009 08:58:37 -0400 > From: jeff.coatswo...@jonassoftware.com > To: framers@lists.frameusers.com > > Ok, I give - what's a "heroic open"? If multiple missing files are all in the same new location, say ../pending_graphics, then in the FM Missing Files dialog, you only need to identify the new path once for the first missing file. FM will look in that same location for the other missing ones, rather than bothering you again. RE: Import by Reference Question/Bug ?
My apologies Richard, you did state this in an earlier response. I use the import by reference function as a kind of alerting system. My Engineering group has a bunch of directories filled with schematic and mechanical drawings they convert to jpg or png or pdf. I then import by reference from these directories into my Frame file to create a drawing book. If Engineering is changing a drawing, it is taken out of its original directory and placed into a pending directory waiting for the DCO and the new drawing to become available. When Engineering moves the file, this breaks the import by reference link thus alerting me that my drawing book needs to be updated. Its at this point I run into my problem of not being able to get by the Missing File window. I have also run into the scenario you state below where multiple files have been moved for updating. I get an updated drawing placed back into its original directory, Frame recognizes the new drawing and moves on to the next missing file and sticks, its as if the Ignore and Skip functions just don't work. Well, I hate to repeat myself, but: "I have to wonder why the file path or name of your imported-by-reference drawings keeps changing. What is it about your workflow that causes this problem to keep coming up? Maybe you can fix that part so this just doesn't happen anymore." Or to deal specifically with the immediate problem: 1) In the Missing File dialog, FM tells you the path and name of the file that's missing. Make a note of it, and then cancel. 2) Put a file of the correct name in the correct location -- preferably the actual file that should be used, but any file of that type will do. 3) Try opening the FM file again. If the Missing File dialog reports another missing file, try the Ignore option, and if that doesn't work, repeat step 2. 4) Repeat step 3 until the FM file opens. Once it's open, you can try the MIF wash business, but I strongly suggest you instead focus on finding out why you keep having these missing file problems and fixing that. HTH! Richard Richard G. Oops, l should be the one feeling stupid for recommending the MIF save when the problem is that you can't successfully open the file. Duh! Will "heroic open" get you past the "Missing File" dialog? Or another approach to try is using File>Import>File to import the content of the reluctant file into a clean, working template file. -Fred Ridder > Subject: RE: Import by Reference Question/Bug ? > Date: Tue, 18 Aug 2009 15:44:42 -0400 > From: rmelan...@spirecorp.com > To: rmelan...@spirecorp.com; art.campb...@gmail.com; kmcdan...@pavtech.com > CC: framers@lists.frameusers.com; feimin.lore...@onsemi.com > > Boy do I feel stupid :-) > > I am trying to open a file to save it as a MIF file to "clean out any > impurities" that I am unable to open because of the impurities. RE: Import by Reference Question/Bug ?
For the record, the Wash as MIF command works perfectly in the free trial version of Mif2Go. The only thing affected by the trial version vs. the fully licensed version is that the word order is randomized in many of the converted output formats (e.g. HTML Help) so that you cannot use the trial version to produce real deliverables. The utility functions work fine. Manual washing is only a few simple steps (saving as MIF, then opening the MIF and saving as .fm), but when you have Wash via MIF in the menu you get really lazy... -Fred Ridder > Subject: RE: Import by Reference Question/Bug ? > Date: Tue, 18 Aug 2009 14:31:03 -0500 > From: jim.pink...@voith.com > To: feimin.lore...@onsemi.com; framers@lists.frameusers.com > > Yes, that's right. RE: Import by Reference Question/Bug ?
I was unemployed for a while a few years ago and through the generosity of Omni Systems, I received a copy of MIF2Go. After the response below, "wash as MIF" caught my attention I Googled it. This appears to be a function of MIF2Go, I am probably stating what everyone already knows :-) Anyway, I do NOT have the "wash as MIF" option in the file menu of Frame. How do I get it? RE: Import by Reference Question/Bug ?
Rick, On your first email, I opened a graphic and made some edits. I did not change the graphic filename. Then open the corresponding Frame file without any problems. I renamed the graphic file and reopened the Frame book. When it ran into the missing graphic, I selected Ignore and it just ignored that graphic and opened the file. I closed the Frame file and tried it again and selected Skip and got the same response. This tends to tell me that something in Frame has gotten corrupted. You might try reinstalling, at least the latest patch (p277) and then try opening the file. If this doesn't fix it, then I would re0install Frame8 and then, of course, all updates. -Original Message- From: Richard Melanson [mailto:rmelan...@spirecorp.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 18, 2009 11:04 AM To: David Spreadbury; Combs, Richard; framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: Import by Reference Question/Bug ?
