RE: recurring decimals (1 FM8 file attached)

2010-04-18 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hi, Mike.

I tried the Rubi capability out and it seems like it would work for me, if I
solve one minor problem. So, I'd appreciate your comments on this issue.

I used the Special-Rubi function (for example, on the final char 9 in the word
10.999Z) and used the period for the dot. Pretty cool! _But_, the size of
this dot is pretty small, barely visible, and I have not been able to adjust
its size to make it larger.

Is there a special way to do this size increase?

Thanks!

Syed,

That method actually worked very well in certain places in my document, but I
have a problem with it in a few others.
In some cases, the dot needs to be above the number, but the very next
character is either another number or a letter. For example (contrived but
real samples here):
19.1345...
Where a dot needs to be above _both_ the 1 and the 5, or:
10.999Z
Where the dot is above the final 9 that is just before the Z. I actually
have three places in this document where I need this constructed example,
believe it or not!
Anyway, I don't seem to be able to eliminate the space _after_ that digit with
the dot using the method you describe unless I am overlooking something simple?
The first example above shows as 19.1 345 i.e., a space after the 1 and the
5 - the digits that have the dots, and the second example shows as 10.999 Z.
BTW, with a little bit of experimentation, I was able to change the font of
the number in the equation to match the other test, so that worked our pretty
well (not perfect spacing - particularly after the number with the dot - but
usable).

I have similar problems positioning diacritics in Canadian Aboriginal
languages. I use the Rubi ((Special-Rubi)functionality to enter the
diacritics required, and then I move them into place using the alt-arrow
method described. The advantage is that Frame treats the combination as a
single letter. - Might not work for some of the placements you need, though.
Cheers,
Mike

RE: recurring decimals (1 FM8 file attached)

2010-04-18 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Ah! Dummy me ... please ignore my previous e-mail. It is late at night, and I
forgot to do the Apply after changing the font _size_ just on that dot.

The Special-Rubi technique works best of all! I like the fact that it can be
used to modify a single character, and I was able to position that dot just
where I needed it. It also allows me to use the multi-digit recurring decimal
fraction beautifully ... much better than using an equation actually, since I
can apply the Rubi to both the leading and final digits of the recurrence
separately and very easily!

Thanks much!

Hmmm ... I am not familiar with the Rubi functionality at all. I will do some
reading on it - it appears to be something new in FrameMaker 9, I guess since I
don't remember it in earlier versions at all.

Thanks much for the response!

Finally, I was unable to get to that link in your e-mail below ... is that a
correct link to your example?

Thanks for the assistance!

This document is written in English (specifically, Palatino Linotype

current need to change this document into another language, by the
 way.)

Since the equation fonts may be different to your text fonts, you may try
another method:

- type the number 1.333 and after the last figure a period and a blank.
- select the period
- move the period over the last figure with ALT+arrow or for larger amounts of
  dislocation ALT+SHIFT+arrow.

Unfortunately this dislocation can not be captured into a character format but
with the help of MIF such a format can be defined.

See my attached FM 8 file.
Until sunday I will place this on my website at
