Re: [Framers] Linking to a specific page in a PDF file

2016-05-12 Thread john . x . posada
Actually, I am generating bot documents. However, I'm now linking to PDFs
that I created 1-3 years ago, before I was considering the need to link to
them.

However, I think I'm OK...the PDFs to which I'm linking by page numbers are
not moving, changing pagination, being edited, or renamed, so they are (by
law here) pretty stable.

That works great when you're generating both documents. John is
linking to a PDF he has no control over.

Re: [Framers] Linking to a specific page in a PDF file

2016-05-12 Thread jang
I have used a reliable method for cross-deliverable linking in PDF using
Hypertext markers. One set of markers defines the named destinations, using
"newlink XXX". With this method, I set the markers to have names I can figure
out without resorting to investigating tons of destinations in Acrobat Pro.
Also, I can avoid creating named destinations for everything, which blows up
the size of the PDF files.

On the referencing side, I use Hypertext markers with the text "gotolink XXX"
if it is in the same PDF or "openlink DDD:XXX" in case it is a separate PDF
document. There are a couple of snags when PDFs are created from books with
multiple chapters, each with their own named destinations, but this can be made
to work.

Of course I am much too lazy to enter all these markers manually, so I have
scripted everything. Works wonderfully.

If there is enough interest in this, I can convince Adobe to organize a webinar
where I explain and demo this technique. The same markers are also used for
HTML5 marking, where multiple deliverables are created from separate books and
still jump to the right locations in these separate HTML5 products.

Let me know if you want to see this.

Make the window small, zoom in, and set the page display to Single
Page Continuous. If when you double-click a named destination a
heading appears at the top of the window, that's where the named
destination is.

Use named destinations rather than page numbers, which can change if
the PDF is updated.

The MadCap developers didn't get that one right until version 8, and
I'm pretty sure they only got it right then because I rephrased the
issue half a dozen times until they finally understood it.

I'm not sure it's an issue any more, but if the web server does not
support byte-serving, the link won't work.
