Re: Generating web pages out of FM

2014-03-12 Thread Robert Lauriston
FM 12 integrates the most popular features of RoboHelp, which does a
much better job of generating HTML than FrameMaker:

For the best-looking HTML from FrameMaker source, check out WebWorks ePublisher.

RE: Generating web pages out of FM

2014-03-12 Thread Keith Soltys
I’ve been using an evaluation copy of FrameMaker to test the online
capabilities.

The most capable format is the Responsive HTML5, which is comparable to the
Reverb format in Quadralay’s WebWorks ePublisher. It includes a slick skin
editor that lets you customize the visual appearance. As with all of the output
formats in Frame 12, you can control the text formatting by mapping your Frame
styles to the online CSS styles.

I think you could get a very good looking set of pages out of this format, but
whether you can customize it enough to meet your needs is an open question. For
example, I haven’t been able to add a footer below the content that contains a
table with our logo, contact information, and a copyright notice. I do this in
WebWorks by editing the page template file, but I haven’t figured out how to do
this with the Frame templates – there doesn’t appear to be any documentation
about low-level customization like this.

You might want to download a trial copy of Frame 12 and try it out. The new
publishing features are a big improvement over previous versions, but I don’t
think offer the customization capabilities of either WebWorks ePublisher or the
full TCS with RoboHelp.

Regards
Keith

A message from a Doubting Thomas: We read Adobe's assertion, that with the
latest version of FM we become able to transform our files directly into
good-looking web pages. However, this isn't the first time the corporation has
claimed this for its product and with earlier versions of FM it simply was not
true. Now the latest version of FM has been available for some months and yet
we haven't seen anyone claim on this discussion list, that this time they have
succeeded.

We're standing by, to purchase a new PC with the latest Microsoft operating
system and such, on which to install this latest FM version. Funding has been
approved and we're ready to go to town! --But, we're hesitant. A scalded dog
runs away from dishwater.

What gives? Has anyone actually done this yet? Has anyone now been able to
directly transform their FM files into good-looking web pages? Can someone
provide the URL for an example of this?

RE: Generating web pages out of FM

2014-03-12 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi,

I also recommend to test the trial version yourself.

I installed it in a virtual machine so that nothing else will be affected.
When I tested the conversion to HTML Help briefly with the default
settings, it worked very well! Very fast. Very convenient! Seamless,
no issues. Many options to configure your conversion.
However, that’s for our documentation. I do not know how yours look
like.

Mif2Go has some options which FrameMaker 12 does not offer
and vice versa. They are different. If you miss anything in FrameMaker 12,
then check out Mif2Go, I will continue using Mif2Go, mainly because I do
not want to configure the FrameMaker conversion.

Best regards

Winfried

Re: Generating web pages out of FM

2014-03-11 Thread Art Campbell
I beta tested it for about a year, and I can tell you that it does better
HTML export than any previous version.
That said, I haven't tried to export hundreds or thousands of pages And
I can't give you a URL; most of the stuff I was working with was
proprietary.

I think best case it may meet your needs out of the box (and I wouldn't be
surprised if your needs are pretty staightforward).
Worst case is you have the fallback of MIF2Go which always produces spiffy
output. And you would also have the option of outputting through RoboHelp
if you wished.

RE: Generating web pages out of FM

2014-03-11 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
Lots of discussion on the FM Adobe forums about creating responsive HTML5 &
other forms of output straight out of FM. But why wait? Just grab a
non-production machine & suck down the FM12 trial (it’s the same as the real
one) & play around with it for 30 days – remember to perform updates right away
as there’s already FM12 patches out there.
