Anything by Oskar Fischinger!
There is also a film that cracks me up, if you can find it. Sour Death
Balls, which was distributed by Carousel Films and Video. I just don't
know what happened to their holdings after the company went out of business.

franco - not 'traditionally' an experimental film, but godard's weekend
is as dystopic a view of the idyllic ountryside as you will get.
otherwise, again narrative films - straw dogs came to mind, and haneke's
white ribbon.

Ann Severson's ANIMALS RUNNING
Gunvor Nelson's MY NAME IS OONA
Ken Jacobs's OPTIC ANTICS [featuring Laurel and Hardy]

It's more fantastical than experimental, but Heavenly Creatures seems to fit

And it should go without saying, Deliverance, though clearly not experimental
in any overt way. A Clockwork Orange, too. I was thinking also, Viridiana.

Experimental filmmakers don't seem to get out of the city that much, and when
they do they're more likely to wax rhapsodic on 'nature'. I'm not sure the
violence and ignorance that reign in the little villages is something most

Non experimental films are welcome also.
