[Frameworks] 4k theater conversion

2014-12-03 Thread Matthew Shaw

Hello everyone,

Has anyone recently made the conversion to 4k DCP at their college / university
/ local cinema? We are looking into converting our 35mm and digital racks to
DCP while keeping the option of 35, VHS, etc.

Much obliged,
Matt Shaw

[Frameworks] A.L. Rees, 1949–2014

2014-12-03 Thread Deke Dusinberre
I'm sorry to report that the avant-garde film community, and the British scene
in particular, has lost a valiant, witty champion. Al Rees died at home in
London last Friday after a long illness. He was an inspiring teacher,
insightful critic, and elegant writer—his History of Experimental Film and
Video has deservedly been reprinted several times since it was first published
in 1999.
He was also a warm and loyal friend.

Cher Deke,

c'est une bien triste nouvelle. J'ai eu la chance de rencontrer Al
Rees à l'occasion d'une présentation de mes films à Londres chez
no.w.here. Il m'a fait le grand plaisir d'apprécier mon travail.

Bien à toi,

Helga

Re: [Frameworks] 4k theater conversion

2014-12-03 Thread Dennis Doros
Dear Matt,

You might want to also ask the Art House Convergence listserv
http://www.arthouseconvergence.org/resources/ since almost everybody on
that list has either converted or about to. There's also a lot of the
companies that do the conversions (Boston Light and Sound, Cardinal) on the
listserv willing to give free advice.

You also should definitely talk to the lovely folks at NYSCA's Electronic
Media and Film department. New York State's Regional Economic Development
office and NYSCA with their Digital Film Projector Conversion Program
have been leading the way to helping theaters and non-profits convert to
digital. There's a brief outline of it here
http://regionalcouncils.ny.gov/assets/documents/workshops/CouncilontheArts2013.pdf
in their PDF. I think it's the only program like it in the country. I was
on the original advisory panel for it and I have seen it's been very
successful.

Best regards,
Dennis Doros

Dear Deke,

Thank you for sharing this very sad news. I’ve long admired Al’s work - his
book and numerous articles on experimental film are never far from my reach
when I’m writing, and I’m sure many other scholars would say the same. He was
encouraging of my own work, which meant a lot to me. He’ll continue to be a
