Re: [Frameworks] Auto-load projector problem

2016-11-14 Thread Christopher Ball
I am lucky I guess to have two Bell and Howell autoloads that work
seamlessly. They also don't scratch and can run forward and reverse
seamlessly...also the sound is pretty good! Pure luck, I guess. I do
clean them regularly and try to not let them sit around for too long before
running them.

Re: [Frameworks] Experimental Christmas films

2016-11-14 Thread Dave Tetzlaff
> The first film I'm thinking of is: Xmas on earth by Barbara Rubin ( 1963)

It’s a great piece, not really a ‘film’ but a two-projector performance…

But it’s not really about Christmas, and it might not be the best choice for
"an audience which will include people who have little to no experience viewing
experimental film” since it’s in inner image of people wearing g full body
makeup performing a variety of sex acts, inside an outer frame of a handheld
camera moving in out and around a close up of a woman’s vagina.

That really ought to be mentioned in any recommendation, I think.
_

I don’t have any films to suggest myself off the top of my hat, but I’d suggest
playing the Residents as the audience comes into the screening room:

[Frameworks] A bit of good news out of New York // Celebrate 10 years with us

2016-11-14 Thread MONO NO AWARE
Hello Frameworkers,

Some of you may have already received this email through other social
means, my apologies if you are receiving this twice, I'm excited to share a
bit of positive news : )

Last year MONO NO AWARE, the cinema-arts
non-profit in Brooklyn New York, received a donation-in-kind of an *entire
motion picture laboratory from Filmworkers Lab in Dallas, Texas. * There
are less than half a dozen motion picture laboratories functioning in the
US today, so with our 501c3 status, this allows us the unique opportunity
to open the first ever full service non-profit motion picture lab in the
United State
s,
completely dedicated filmmakers and artists of the moving image. We also
received *the remaining parts library from Oxberry in South Orange NJ *and
are happy to help any artist-run lab space, independent filmmaker or
University replace needed components to keep their machines up and running.

This forum has been an essential resource for me and the organization MONO
NO AWARE for the last ten years. My hope is that the facility we are
building will continue to support first-time filmmakers, practicing
filmmakers, preservationists and exhibiting artists allowing MONO to play a
larger role in the greater landscape of moving image production. To add
the services of linear processing, film cleaning, and scanning to our
current facilities, atop education and exhibition initiatives is a great
undertaking, so I'm asking that members of Frameworkers please share this
news with friends, family, students, colleagues and those who have a deep
seeded interest in film. If there are any questions about the specific
equipment or services, please direct them to this email :
mononoawaref...@gmail.com

This project and the wonderful community that has grown around it have been
the greater part of my life for the last decade. Sharing this news helps to
support not only the efforts of MONO but the education / production /
preservation of our moving image culture.

As part of our tenth anniversary for MONO NO AWARE, we have organized a massive
cinema-arts festiva
l
with 21 events throughout 3 boroughs of New York City presenting the work
of 150 artists, musicians, dancers, and filmmakers now through December
3rd. Please check out the calendar for more info about the full program
and I hope that you can attend if you are in the greater NYC area. The
first weeks have been incredible with sold out shows presenting; A rare
16mm film dual projection by Carolee Schneemann in conversation with
Anthology Film Archives' Ava Tews.

+ A program of films by Gordon Matta-Clark in conversation led by Jessamyn
Fiore at ZeiherSMith Gallery.

+ A premiere of a dance/film-performance by Lucy Kerr and Q led by Dance
Films Association's Brighid Greene
,
Taiwanese Films, Nicky Hamlyn projector performance, A Bolex workshop at
Alice Austen House, and so many more. There are 10 events left in the
festival leading up to our annual exhibition of expanded cinema December
2nd and 3rd.

I do hope to see you at one of the events and that in the near future MONO
can host, support, and exhibit you/r work here in Brooklyn, New York.

Thank you all again for your support and positive encouragement,

Best,

Steve Cossman

2016-11-14 Thread G D Cohen
Many of the films in Phill Niblock's "The Movement of People Working"
series depict people performing agricultural work: "Trabajando Una";
"Trabajando Dos"; etc.

The Russian filmmaker to which the poster from "Cinema Project" referred
could be Sergei Loznitsa. See, for example, "Life, Autumn," "Settlement,"
"Artel," "Northern Light"...

2016-11-14 Thread Angelica Cuevas Portilla
Yes! I was going to say Naomi Uman, her two documentaries : LECHE and
MALA LECHE

LECHE (1998, 30 min.)
Filmed in black and white 16mm, hand-processed and hung to dry, Leche
examines details of the life of one family, living on an isolated dairy
ranch in Central Mexico.

MALA LECHE (2003, 47 min)
Considered a companion piece, this film follows the same family
presented in Uman's earlier film Leche. Now living in California's
agricultural Central Valley, the family continues to work with dairy
cattle but under very different circumstances.

[Frameworks] Experimental Christmas films

2016-11-14 Thread Harriet Warman
Dear FrameWorks community,

I'm planning a screening at the beginning of December for an audience which
will include (hopefully) some people who have little to no experience
viewing experimental/artist's film.
I'd like to show one or two Christmas/festive themed works and I'd welcome
any suggestions you might have for works I should consider. They could
involve anything we might associate with the 'festive' season, even if it's
just the presence of snow.

Many thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Harriet.

Re: [Frameworks] Auto-load projector problem

2016-11-14 Thread Scott Dorsey
> Do these projectors have issues or is there a trick?

Autoload systems are touchy and need constant maintenance. If you pick one
up off the shelf that has not been lubed in a decade, the chances that it will
work flawlessly are about zero.

Make sure that the tip of the film has been trimmed to shape properly (and
please don't trim any more film than you absolutely have to), and you can
try bending the tip in slightly with your finger. Once it threads, you
may need to give it a good jerk to make it lock properly if it has not been
properly maintained.

But... for the most part... I don't like autoshredders.

Re: [Frameworks] Auto-load projector problem

2016-11-14 Thread Pip Chodorov
And sometimes you cam jog the run lever in spurts until the film
starts to jump out of the loop former. At that point you can guide
the end of the film into the gate at the point where it is catching,
then it should load the rest of the way automatically.

Re: [Frameworks] Auto-load projector problem

2016-11-14 Thread Fred Camper
In addition to the good suggestions already given, sometimes it helps,
especially with some super8s, to bend the head of the film a bit to put
a little temporary curl in it to match the direction of the loop former.
This seems especially helpful with some super-8s.

With the Bolex super-8 18-5s, it is possible to remove the upper and
lower loop formers and the bottom film guide to turn them into manual
loads. You have to break a little plastic but it doesn't damage the
projectors to do so.

Hi,
I keep encountering auto-load projectors in 16mm and S8 mm that don't load for

auto-loading but when the film feeds in it goes straight up after the first
curve without entering the gate. Do these projectors have issues or is there a
trick?
Need more community.
