Re: [Frameworks] ¿hay alguien en el d.f., Mexico?

2013-03-16 Thread Brenda Contreras
Hi Kristie,

I was living down in el DF up until recently and although my focus was not on
mainstream Mexican films from the Golden Age I did work with a lady who was
writing a book on the history of studios in Mexico. She may be able to help you
with connections or first hand info but just lemme message her first. I'm not
sure if she has time.

Other than her, I would advise you to contact the Cineteca Nacional and the
AMACC. They also have lots of info on Gabriel Figueroa (i'm sort of assuming
you would want to research him too).

oh and fyi, during semana santa and semana pascua a lot of locals head out to
the beach so it may not be the best time to head down there.

best of luck,
Brenda Contreras

Hola.

gracias,
Kristie

Below is more information on the films. Hope you can make it out there!

Explorations and Documentations: 10 Short Films from the North American
Experimental Cinema

This
program emerged directly as a product of the daring spirit of the
underground film community. Composed of 16mm, VHS, Super 8, digital and
archival footage, the works in ‘Explorations and Documentations’ are
culled from the curator’s personal geographical journey. This survey of
experimental films from Mexico, Canada, and the United States take on
views disparate from traditional cinematic storytelling regarding
gentrification, fallen heroines, portraiture, poetry, sexual encounters,
 and imagined journeys.

Featuring works by: Barbara Hammer, Ricardo Nicolayevsky, Dolissa
Medina, Navid Sinaki, Elena Pardo, Rafael Balboa, Leslie Supnet, Morris
Manuel Trujillo, Karl Lind Cat Tyc, and Dalia Huerta Cano.

Jane Brakhage (1974) 16mm by Barbara Hammer
A documentary on the pioneer woman, her wisdom, philosophy and common
sense: Jane Brakhage as herself is the viewpoint rather than Jane
Brakhage, wife of the filmmaker, Stan Brakhage.

Naomi (2005) Super 8 by Ricardo Nicolayevsky
Part of a collection of 9 portraits titled the Mexico City Portraits.
This series showcased Portraits of women film and video makers, born or
 residing in Mexico City.

The Moonsong of Assassination (2010) Video by Dolissa Medina
A documentary creation story about Tex-Mex “Tejano” music singer
Selena, who in 1995 at the brink of crossover success, was shot and
killed at age 24 by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar.

The Assumption (2011) mixed; Digital and VHS by Navid Sinaki
A man in conversation with Death recalls the cities, the men, and
textures that he loved, as well as those that broke him apart.

Mi Barrio (2009) 16mm and Video by Elena Pardo
A portrait of a neighborhood in Mexico City.

Intermezzo (2006) 35mm by Rafael Balboa
For the very first time I had the chance to work with original music
strings frequencies provided by Julio Clavijo. The entire film is
made with 35mm found footage, after much destruction by chemicals the
results really bites people.

Sun Moon Starts (2009) Super 8 by Leslie Supnet
sun moon stars rain is a psychedelic visual elegy, lamenting the death of
Mother Nature's children.

PRELUDE (2009) 16mm found footage by Morris Manuel Trujillo
A found footage experimental short film made of abandoned, later found,
worked and hand painted on; images loaded with symbolism, both
autobiographical and premonitory.

Striping (2006) SD by Karl Lind Cat Tyc
A hacked VCR remembers a poem by Cat Tyc.

Alle Mensen en Andere Ziveraar (2010) 16mm by Dalia Huerta Cano
An exploration on a confused state of a trapped and wild experience on
supposedly dancing forever or never with someone. An experimentation
with 16mm double exposure and by hand developing using extra materials
as buckets, sand and any film scratcher. Co-directed with Belgian artist
 Patrick Danse.

[Frameworks] Buying film in Mexico City

2012-03-23 Thread Brenda Contreras
I checked the archives before writing this and didn't find what I needed.

I'm looking for a place that sells 16mm film in Mexico City. I checked and
asked all over Donceles street with no luck.  Does anyone have some first hand
insight of where I should look.

thanks,
Brenda Contreras

[Frameworks] Call for Submissions!

2012-01-01 Thread Brenda Contreras

The Arts at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San
Francisco, a visual arts exhibition program, is planning a Spring 2012
program of experimental film and new media from the Middle East, North
Africa, and their diasporas. Inspired by the Arab Spring and its
potential for a radical redress of oppressive structures of power, the
program explores ways in which power determines frames of social and
cultural visibility. Drawn from work both invited and solicited
through this call, the program examines marginalized subjectivities.
Submitted work should address gender and sexuality, (cross) border
identities, counter-cultural practices, or other experiences not
commonly reflected in mainstream narrative films.

This program is co-sponsored by Artist Television Access and the San
Francisco Arab Film Festival. There are no limitations on length and
no fees for submitting your film. For submission form and guidelines
please send an email to menaexperimen...@gmail.com. Deadline for
submissions is Feb 1,  2012.
