2018-12-26 Thread paris-experimental
Hi Michael, print-on-demand is not the solution, too complicated for bad result.

The only way should be to find some University press or English publisher to
become a co-editor of the English edition.

So I could pay a graphic designer to realize a lay-out and a printer to print
it on paper !

If anyone is interested, please contact me off list.

I can fully understand the costs of printing a physical edition being a
constraint. Have you considered setting it up as a print-on-demand book, as
with Amazon's createspace? It's basically the same design files you would use
for the ebook. Since you're already using Amazon this should be relatively
easy. I personally prefer print over electronic.

"The Group of films produced under the flag of Zanzibar has been for me the
greatest discovery in French cinema. It’s a group of films that nobody
seriously interested in cinema can afford to miss. It’s an exciting bridge
between the Nouvelle Vague and the avant-garde, between poetry and narrative.
None of these films has lost anything in time: just the opposite. They have
grown in their intensity of personal, poetic and cinematic vision."
Jonas Mekas (2000)

« Si jamais il a existé une idée du pop en France, c'est de là qu'elle giclait.
Dans toutes ses contradictions : révolution et luxe, défonce au néant et à
l'acide, idéal de mystique, d'anorexie pascalienne et de beauté. Car tous les
Zanzibars étaient beaux, jusqu'au scandale. »

In collaboration with Re:Voir, Paris Expérimental published, in 1997, The

[Frameworks] NEW BOOK BY MAURICE LEMAITRE

2017-08-21 Thread paris-experimental
NEW BOOK BY MAURICE LEMAÎTRE
Maurice Lemaître (b. 1926) is a poet, painter, filmmaker, and performer. A
historic figure of the Lettrist movement from its inception, whose
revolutionary ideas, together with Isidore Isou, helped propagate. Paris
Expérimental is proud to present Done with Filming, its fifth Lemaître
publication.

DONE WITH FILMING

by Maurice Lemaître

Done with Filming is the title of a film made by Maurice Lemaître between 1985
– 1990. It is composed of a collection of slides, primarily from New Wave
films, on which the artist has intervened in multiple ways: with touch-ups,
smudges, and graphic and visual interventions. Simultaneously, the soundtrack
consists of a fake journalistic-style interview in which Lemaître, in his
characteristic manner that is both serious and humorous, gives an account of
his relationship with cinema, criticism, and creation.

The book imitates the format of the film, in a printed version. The text of the
bilingual sound-track (English-French) winds its way throughout the
approximately 200 images. The book showcases the visual power of Lemaître, with
his détournements of images, who is undeniably one of the most talented of the
Lettrist generation. In the interview, Lemaître poses the question of cinema’s
imminent end, while also passing the torch to future generations.

collection. He holds forth on the uses and the metaphorical interpretations of
various objects that come from different civilizations and epochs.

The book is accompanied by a CD with audio excerpts from the evening.

-   PETER KUBELKA

Peter Kubelka (b. 1934 in Vienna) is a historic figure of independent cinema.
Shot between the 1950s and the 1970s, his œuvre offers new forms of filmic
expression. Today, his films are represented in international art museums and
cinematheques.  With his friends, Jonas Mekas, Stan Brakhage and P. Adams
Sitney, Kubelka was one of the original founding members of Anthology Film
Archives in New York. Later, he founded the Austrian Filmmuseum of Vienna and
taught filmmaking as well as cooking at the Frankfurt School of Fine Arts
(Städelschule). His artistic interests surpass filmmaking. A keen observer, he
compares the visual arts to music, language, and cooking, which he believes to
be the world’s oldest art. In April 2017, the Centre Pompidou has invited Peter
Kubelka to give a lecture series and to screen his most recent film, Monument
Film in its French premiere. Paris Expérimental’s new book on him will be
published for this occasion.

Hi Maxwell,

Welcome to the list!

The list Chuck sent lacks the title I would have recommended in the first
place: Michael O´Pray's "Avant-Garde Film: Forms, Themes and Passions". It is
actually conceived as an introduction to avant-garde film. It doesn't cover
recent works but it goes from the 1920s to 1980s - 90s. It's a great book for a
beginner, and if you are looking for "something broad that will give a jumping
off point for as many artists as possible" you may want to have a look at
Vogel's "Film as a Subversive Art" too!

2017-01-07 14:07 GMT+01:00 John McAndrew <jj.mcand...@gmail.com>:

I'd say just start with books that are easily available and cheap to pick up,
like A.L. Rees' A History of Experimental Film and Video, published by the
British Film Institute (either edition is fine). I don't think bombarding
someone with a list of 30 or so books as an "introduction" is a good idea... if
they want to research the subject further then they can investigate some of
those other titles in the bibliography at the end of that book - you know,
after they've first finished reading it.

Does anyone know a good introductory book on contemporary experimental
film/video that isn't all about either work from pre-1980, or focused heavily
on video installations? I've been trying to think of one, and am coming up
blank...

[Frameworks] Stan Brakhage's catalogue raisonné - looking for partners

Dear Friends of experimental cinema

I'm running Paris Expérimental publishing house.

As you may know, we are preparing, with agreement of Marilyn Brakhage, Stan
Brakhage's catalogue raisonné.

For the edition of this book we acquired a help of the French Ministery of
Culture which covers only a part of the financing of the book.

We are now in search of the other part to be able to publish this bilingual
book (English-French) of more than 500 pages and 150 illustrations.

The catalogue raisonné will be released in November 2015 for the 30 years of
Paris Expérimental which will be celebrated in the Centre Pompidou.

This catalogue raisonné will make authority. Curated by Emilie Vergé,
supervised by Marilyn Brakhage and accomplished with the help of the biggest
specialists of Brakhage,

it will be the final catalogue of the work of Brakhage, exhaustive and
necessary to every scholar, curator, collector, enlightened amateur.

We are offering to lovers of Stan Brakhage’s work, institutions, universities,
publishers and organizations which are involved in showing, archiving,
publishing,

studying experimental cinema, has a page of advertising in the book to promote
their activities – expense 750 euros.

Editions Paris Expérimental contribute since around thirty years to the
knowledge of the experimental cinema and this project of catalogue raisonné of
Stan Brakhage

follows the publication in 2012 of the catalogue raisonné by Jonas Mekas
published for the 80 years of the artist.

Our books are distributed worldwide by Les Belles Lettres SAS (www.bldd.fr)

If you are interested to being part of this publication to promote your
activities and contribute to help us to publish this essential book, please
contact me off list.

We need 10 partners to be able to publish the book. Each one will have an
entire page to present its activities.

Here is the challenge.

Here is the beginning of the film

OUT OF (k)NOWHERE : A FILM BY ANNE PRAT (2003-2006)

« Ouverture »

Very little was left of the film by Anne Prat, a brilliant student who studied
cinema with me at the University of Paris in the 1970s.

Anne Prat was not just any student. She would usually arrive twenty minutes
before the end of class – something that I found rather annoying – and only to
see the screening of the avant-garde films that concluded each lesson. Three
weeks before summer break in 1976, even though she had not taken part in any of
practical lessons, she presented a short film, shot in the Brakhage style,
which surprised all of us with its technical mastery. She informed me she was
going to stop studying and go to Australia, and that her film was just the
beginning of a larger and more complicated cinematographic work.

Two years later, I found out that Anne Prat, after returning to Paris, had
found work in a film lab for the sole reason of being able to develop for free
the numerous reels she had shot and to duplicate, on the sly and for herself,
some classic films she particularly liked. All this in order to realize her
ambitious film project, on which she worked tirelessly, which consisted of a
large composition for two film projectors, and various sound fragments. She
described certain passages to me, speaking of «images and sounds that come out
of nowhere, as if in a daydream» and revealed the film’s definitive title: Out
of (k)nowhere.

A few weeks later, Anne Prat left a message on my answering machine, informing
me that she was returning to Australia. She told me that she had left the
material for her film at the university, in a big box, and asked me to pick it
up. At that time, I had no idea I would never going to see her again.

In November of 2002, while creating an inventory of my films, I rediscovered
that big box. I thought back on Anne Prat’s project, and remembered her story
and what she had told me twenty years earlier.

So I started viewing the film and listening to the sound recordings, one after
another, in the designated numerical order. In the box, I only found one rough
scenario that indicated that the film was to be two hours long overall and
divided into a number of parts, separated from each other by silence, darkness
and the songs of exotic birds. There was a cassette attached to the notes, of
the bird songs, recorded by Australian ornithologist John N. Hutchinson.

Using my memory as the starting point, and the material left by Anne Prat, I
have tried to reconstruct that which Out of (k)nowhere could have been.

The film begins with the short, silent Brakhage-style work, meant for only one
screen. Later, where it was possible, I reconstructed the dual-screen
projection according to the directions in the outline.

C. L., Paris, 7 May 2003

This film is not on line.

Film Culture magazine, founded in 1955 by Jonas and Adolfas Mekas is an essential resource and document, measuring the pulse of the
American avant-garde film from January 1955 to Winter 1996.
The publication contains several indexes: an index of authors, a subject index, an index of film titles and an index of illustrations, as
well as a complete table of contents.
The research tool proposed here is preceded by two rare documents. The first is the transcription of a discussion at Columbia University
in 2001 between Jonas Mekas, J. Hoberman, Andrew Sarris and P. Adams Sitney. The second is a reprint of the Editorialfrom # 14, November 1957, in which Jonas Mekas, editor of the journal, calls
for the renewal of an experimental cinema in America.

Born in Lithuania in 1922, Jonas Mekas has made over 90 films, videos and installations since his arrival in New York in 1949.
Each piece inventoried is accompanied by a technical text, a list of public collections and distributors, and one or several notices summarizing the content of the work.
Presented in chronological order, Jonas Mekas’oeuvre can be understood in its entirety.
The editor as well as author of the foreword is Pip Chodorov, one of the best connoisseurs of Joans Mekas’ work. An accompanying text by Emeric de Lastens and Benjamin Léon reposition the artist’s work in its historical context and its stylistic evolution.
This book is also an invitation to travel through Mekas’ life work, thanks to many rich and evocative illustrations.
