Hello frameworkers,
I’ve been given some reels of 16mm magnetic film and was wondering if anyone
knows whether it’s possible to remove the magnetic coating somehow? Have tried
bleach and water which has done nothing.
Thanks,

It's designed to be as hard as possible to remove the coating as possible,
though you could try acetone if it's polyester-based stuff. If it's acetate,
acetone will dissolve the base.

May not be worth the trouble. The base itself may be opaque... Try scrapping
with a razor blade to see.

Thanks Scott I’ll try the acetone, that’s basically nail varnish remover?
Francisco, the base is clear as I’ve scratched at it with a pin. Wondering if
there are chemicals which will remove the coating like when bleach can just
remove the emulsion from film, but not sure what the magnetic coatin
The magnetic coating is barn paint. It's ground up rust in vehicle that
keeps it sticking to the base.
If you're looking for clear base, though, it would seem a lot easier to
trade the more-expensive magfilm to someone for less-expensive clear base.

Hello frameworkers,
Two questions re: Ernie Gehr's Serene Velocity.
anyone out there--researchers/preservationists--undertaken the
mundane task of doing frame counts?
are there any titles or credits on the film?
Thanks in advance. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing the film in
the past dec

The film has no titles. Ernie Gehr said the film didn't need them.
As to the frames, I think he has mentioned that every stage in the zoom lens
was set to four frames, but I could be wrong.
Cheers.

I do believe there is a title card on the film. "Serene Velocity" written
in pen on a piece of paper and photographed, placed long before the images
start. Ernie Gehr was a professor of mine and once explained that he added
titles like this because, while he would prefer that they not be part of

I have had the film on rewinds and it is a four frame rhythm per each focal
length. As farnas i can remember there is at least two mistakes that i
notice while watching it projected.
