Re: [Frameworks] Research about "Essential Cinema" ? Anthology Film Archives

2019-09-30 Thread Albert Alcoz
Thank you for your answers Pip, Joel and Mark.

I'll try to get the book *The Essential Cinema*, first published by the New
York University Press in 1975 and then by the Anthology Film Archives
around 1989.

Someone gave me the email of P. Adams Sitney so i will try to write him to
know the initial ideas behind the project Essential Cinema and the
procedures to establish and consolidate it.

Best,
Albert

When I did some research in the Brakhage papers at CU Boulder, I came
across a bunch of documents pertaining to the Essential Cinema
selection/committee process, which were fascinating. Stan Brakhage was
initially involved in the committee, but ended up leaving it, apparently.
There were lists of films and spaces for people to vote for the film's
inclusion, etc. If you can get access to some of that material (maybe P.
Adams still has them?) it would be well worth a look.

Albert,
The project was funded by Jerome Hill, Anthology’s benefactor, but he died in
Anthology’s second year, after that time no new acquisitions were made and
there are no plans for future acquisitions. The project is stuck in time ca
1971.

Hi Monise,

There seems to be some discussion about films made with the DeVry 35mm
(“lunchbox) camera here:

Some footage I shot with this camera provided a large area for hand painting
and can be seen in my film “Regatta” which can be viewed from my webpage.

Re: [Frameworks] research

2016-06-18 Thread Morgan Hoyle-Combs
I have been using numerous wind up and hand cranked cameras made by the Kodak
company from the 1920s. One of which is the Cine Kodak Special. Its
essentially the precursor to the Bolex H16. Ive used it for stop motion,
hand cranks, fade ins/fade outs etc. Obviously you can still get film for it,
but the earlier Cine Kodak models such as the A, E and K come with teeth that
take double perforated film. Places sell it here and there, but it has become
hard to come by nowadays. Because of this, Ive been recycling double perf
leader and footage to make myself hand made emulsion to be used with these
cameras. Ive even debated snatching one of the oval keystone wind ups and
making the use of its motor for a hand crank system. Robert Schaller has
done both former and latter. I would look him up.

Are you looking for recent films or older ones? If the latter, Shirley
Clarke uses bleach and (I think) other things on her short *Butterfly *that
you can see now on the recently-restored dvd of *Portrait of Jason. *Storm

all 1960s stuff and you may be asking for something more
recent/sophisticated.
