The only other thing I can think of is that the old kernel
had support for PnP, whereas the new ones doesn't. This shouldn't
matter though if I'm supplying the parameters directly to the card.

I'm using the "experimental" ATA code though; are you using IDE
disks with the ATA or old WD driver, or are you using SCSI disks ?

driver in -stable, and he committed a fix for that.
Is it possible for that fix to be MFS ?
