But this is first time I've had a Break in attempt going on for this long

As far as I remember, according to the install doc for F-Prot,
you're supposed to put /usr/local/bin before /usr/bin in your path.
Also it depends of using bash shell.
Check the docs at F-Prot's website.

Try to connect with an ordinary user-account.
If you need root access, use an account in the wheel-group,
and then su to root after you're connected.
I belive that direct root-login are disabled.
