Let us take a look at you smbd.conf, that might help.

Samba seems to slow or hang (top reports smbd CPU usage as 40%) when
files are copied off the server using windows exp

Sometimes - particularily over the weekends - our samba server at
school stops working.
Sometimes it's only the smbd daemon, sometimes the whole system
doesn't react anymore.
After a reboot or a restart of smbd everything works fine again.
