No I have not installed from the mini-inst, but from the standard FreeBSD
5.3R release disk #1.

Anything else that could be the cause of my problem?

Are you installing from the mini-inst.iso ? If so, I don't believe XFree
 is
included on that image. If you want to install the XFree binaries, you
may want to download the full iso set.

Do you mean that the X Window system is not installed, or that XFree86
is not installed? FreeBSD 5.3 uses xorg by default.

My installation of X Window (via xorg) using the 5.3R cd1 was

Acer TM 603TER freezes on 5.x

2004-12-04 Thread freebsd_daemon
Dear list,

Installing FreeBSD 5.x (5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 5.2.1, and 5.3) on my Acer Travelmate
603TER the machine freezes after being up for a few seconds (just enough
time to mount my USB stick and save a dmesg). On 5.3R I get an ata1-slave:
FAILURE - ATAPI_IDENTIFY timed out error message (I am not sure if the
freeze is related to this), otherwise the install works okay (no freeze);
did not used to be so on the other 5.x-Releases (froze during install).

It does not matter if I boot with ACPI enabled or disabled; it always
freezes.

I do not experience that problem with 4.x (since 4.6R) and not with OpenBSD
3.5 and 3.6.

I would really apreciate some advice and help.

The dmesg from the last try (5.3R) is attached.

TIA

zheyu

Re: Is my Apache server running as the root user or not?

2004-12-04 Thread Peter C. Lai
This isn't on-topic for the list, but I'll answer it anyway. The Apache
parent runs as root so that it can attach to port 80. After a packet reaches
port 80, Apache will hand it off to a child process running as www. The
parent process also does other housekeeping duties as you would expect from
any other parent process.

Isn't there a way to install freebsd from hard disk with only a bootable grub? (all file systems are ext3)

2004-12-04 Thread yiyihu
Hi,all,

I really want to know if there is a way to install freebsd from hard
disk. This old laptop doesn't contain a floppy drive, And I didn't get a
CD burner either. Certainly, The rubbishy computer couldn't be boot use
pxe kind of thing. I've searched google and I have done what I can do
for the result. And still no clue,So anyone here can tell me if there is
a way to install freebsd from hard disk? Grub is installed in a
seperated partition. And the grub manual says it can boot the bsd
kernel.

I am sure that it can be installed with only a bootable hard drive.I
wonder if someone can make a kernel with tmpfs kind of thing
supported. And a loop file contains a minimum root with bsd installer in
it.Then It can do the job.

Or maybe there is a solution like this already?
Well,thanks all for your attention!

Sendmail mungs sender address

2004-12-04 Thread orville weyrich
I was running a FreeBSD 4.3 system. It crashed and I
built up a new FreeBSD 4.10 system. But I cannot get
Sendmail to work the way it did before.

The relevant part of my network includes two hosts,
call them FIRE and BASHFUL. FIRE is my firewall
machine, It runs FreeBSD 4.3 and has not changed. It
relays mail from my internal network to the world and
back. BASHFUL is behind the firewall, is my new 4.10
machine, and is configured to use FIRE as its smart
host. FIRE is known to the universe as
FIRE.MYDOMAIN.COM.

I want mail sent from BASHFUL to carry a sender
address of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Instead it carries a
sender address of [EMAIL PROTECTED] (if sent
from pine on BASHFUL) or [EMAIL PROTECTED] (if
sent from a command-line invocation of sendmail
itself). All changes to sendmail.cf and pine
configuration seem to be ignored).

What has changed that my outgoing mail is broken? My
incoming mail works fine.

Thanks

Problems with VINUM recovery

2004-12-04 Thread orville weyrich
I was trying to test my ability to recover from a disk
crash and managed to toast my system disk. Therefore,
I do not have any relevant vinum history file or
messages file.

What happened is that I purposely blew away the drive
named ahc0t15, and was trying to recover it.

In error, I ran the create command A SECOND TIME with
the exact same configuration file as the first time,
and it created two aditional plexes, which it of
course couldn't fit onto the physical disks, except
for raid.p2.s0, raid.p2.s9, raid.p3.s5 and raid.p3.s5.

I decided that it wasn't working properly, and was in
the process of zapping my entire vinum volume to
recreate it and try again (I had decided that my plex
pattern was not the best), and had zapped the drive
ahc0t02, when I accidently blew away the system disk,
crashing my system.

The good news is that most of the important data I
care about on the system disk was copied to the vinum
volume just to put some data on the volume -- but now
I really WANT that data on the vinum volume, because
it is the most recent backup.

As it stands now, I want to:

(1) delete raid.p2 and raid.p3

(2) rebuild drive ahc0t02 to recieve revived
raid.p0.s0 and raid.p1.s5

(3) rebuild drive ahc0t15 to receive revived
raid.p0.s9 and raid.p1.s4

(4) revive raid.p0.s0 from the valid raid.p1.s0

(5) revive raid.p0.9 from the valid raid.p1.s9

(6) revive raid.p1.s4 from the valid raid.p0.s4

(7) revive raid.p1.s5 from the valid raid.p0.s5

I think (hope!) all of this is possible.

My vinum volume was created on a vanilla FreeBSD 4.3
system. The system has now been reloaded with a
FreeBSD 4.10 system in order to produce the vinum list
output attached (let me know if you have trouble
reading the file as attached).

Trying to rm raid.p2.s8 gives the message
Can’t remove raid.p2.s8: Device busy (16)
*** Warning configuration updates are disabled. ***

I am afraid to reenable configuration updates until I
am sure I know what I am doing.

Since I messed up in my previous attempts, and I am
now between a rock and a hard place, I need some
guidance regarding how to recover -- the failed drill
has suddenly become real :-(

I have looked at the document
http://www.vinumvm.org/vinum/replacing-drive.html and
am not sure how to apply it to the above scenario.

Please please help ... please

into the '/boot/bootloader.conf' file even though I have sound compiled
into my 'kernel'. I thought that compiling sound into the 'kernel' took
care of that. In any case, I will try your suggestion.

 Thanks!

Yes, let me know how it works out.

FDISK Woes

2004-12-04 Thread orville weyrich
I did a stupid thing and zapped my system FreeBSD 4.3
system disk (/dev/ad0) with FDISK and Label (in
/stand/sysinstall)instead of zapping /dev/da0 that I
intended to do. Needless to say, my system got sick.

I have built a new FreeBSD 4.10 system on another disk
and have the old (zapped) system disk installed in the
system (but not mounted).

Is there a way to reconstruct the disk label? (I
need to find the locations of the / (ad0s1a), /usr
(ad0s1f), and /var (ad0s1e), and then write a suitable
disk label without destroying the data on the disk.

I feel so dumb doing this, but it seems strange that
FDISK would allow me to zap the label of a mounted
disk.

Anyway, please help me save my system!

TIA

orvile.

Well I just updated to the latest stable today, and set everything to use the
nvidia agp driver, and it decided to start working. I'm just going to throw my
hands up and be glad it's working now.

Still at 5.3 RELEASE, rebuilt my kernel, and I have the NVIDIA AGP
working as well.

Wierd thing is that when I first installed it, I couldn't even start
Xorg. Kept repeating too fast on the tty. Now all of a sudden, it's
fine.

Must be moody until you coax (or beat) it into submission :)

Fast writes still don't seem to want to work - they show up as
supported, but disabled. Oh well. Not a big deal.

I need help installing FreeBSD 5.3 as the second OS on my workstation. I
have a 501 Mhz Pentium processor with Windows XP Professional and a 28Ghz hard

manager Boot-US 2.0.6 installed. How do I Install FreeBSD 5.3 into another of
the primary partitions ? I have the I386 boot only disk and I386 - disks 1 and

exigent(?) (i dont know the word for: exigente :P) when building world, is
that right?

Can't boot normally - syslog?

2004-12-04 Thread Edward Carmody
Hi,

Running a 5.2.1-Current box. After we suffered a power outage, and the UPS went
offline, the FBSD shut down ugly.

I get the usual messages scrolling by when I try to boot, but as soon as the
drive gets mounted, I see nothing but zillions of scrolling messages without
newlines:

=
logmsg: pri 166, flags 17, from oberon,g
=

over and over again. I've let this run like this for an hour, and it shows no
indication of stopping. :(

I've booted into single-user mode, ran fsck, let it fix some inconsistencies it
found, but when I try to reboot normally, I still get the same logmsgs over and
over again.

Looks like syslog is looping, but I've no idea how to start fixing this.

Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a bug, alright. If you compile in DDB and KDB into your

It doesn't compile with python 2.4; talk to the software authors or
see bsd.python.mk for how to build it with python 2.3.

Kris, I just did a fresh cvsup to make sure where I was, I tossed out all
of what I had, and rebuilt; it builds just fine. The problem is NOT
withthe binary, it's with the library.

How to duplicate?

cd /usr/ports/lang/python make install
cd /usr/ports/x11-toolkits/py-gtk make install

Then, do an

import sys, pygtk
pygtk.require('2.0')
import gtk

inside python, that ought to get you an exception, one that looks like:

I can't locate where any reference to file python24.zip is coming from,
but the file doesn't exist. If I 'touch' it, then it merely moves the
location of the problem along to the next one I need in my app. Something
is wrong, badly wrong, with the site-packages mechanism, and that means
that FreeBSD itself is fine, and in my own opinion, the python binary is
fine also.

FAILURE - ATAPI_IDENTIFY timed out

2004-12-04 Thread Alexey Koptsevich
Hello,
I have a computer (x86 with one IDE drive) which I would like to host both
FreeBSD and Linux. I installed Linux there, and it works fine. I then
tried to install 5.3-RELEASE from the CD, but the installer failed to find
the hard drive and locked with the error message
  ata0-master: FAILURE - ATAPI_IDENTIFY timed out

I then connected this drive to another machine running 5.3R compiled from
sources, and installed the system there using DESTDIR, and arranged
booting through lilo -- same result. Loader's lsdev shows IDE drive, but
then the same ATAPI_IDENTIFY failure happens, and List of GEOM managed
disk devices appears to contain only fd0.

The thread about ATAPI_IDENTIFY failure already appeared in
[EMAIL PROTECTED] on 10/29/04, and the problem was probably resolved since
then. Is it really necessary to upgrade to -CURRENT, or I am doing
something wrong?

Thanks,

Re: XFree86 server crash.

2004-12-04 Thread john
ENVIRONMENT.
Compaq Presario sr1053wm.
I can't provide log files at this point because freebsd works badly
on my machine.

DESCRIPTION
---
I have installed freebsd 5.2.1 about 20 times with various options on
my machine. The result is always the same.
The XFree 86 server always crashes.

THIS IS PROBABLY NOT DUE TO BAD DISKS.
I have tried disks from two different sources, including the boxed
set. I have also tried version 5.0.

XFREE86 DOES WORK ON MY HARDWARE
I also have Openbsd and Suse on the same machine. XFree86 works on
both of these systems. (note I am using partition magic)

I HAVE HAD SEVERAL PROBLEMS INSTALLING XFREE86.
1.. Xconfig reports and error and asks me if I want to try again.
2 ncursses doesn't work either. It didn't write a config file at all .
3. The script version wrote a config file but xfree86 still crashed.
 4. Leaving x alone doesn't work either.
 5. The computer hangs when I chose the exit install option.
(unplugging first doesn't help).

6 I have tried several different configuration settings including
all of the different ones
suggested by the Compaq support staff.( they don't really know
what is in their boxes )
All of the configuration settings that I have tried have been on
the conservative side.

WHERE ARE THE LOG FILES?
My installation of Freebsd doesn't work well enough for me to send
them. Programs like Mozilla don;t work.
(probably needs x).. I have not been able to get FreeBSD to mount a
foreign file system so I can't use Windows
or Linux to send the logs.

HOW TO REPEAT THE PROBLEM
Try to install FreeBSD on a Presario sr1053wm. Good luck!
DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO HOW TO PROCEED?

Not to poke fun at your situation, but have you considered a fresh

2) How can I verify if this drive is bootable? If I loose the main drive - I
want to just swap the backup in and boot from it. any clues here?

IDE Tape Trouble on 4.10: Volume Overflow

2004-12-04 Thread Paul Fuqua
I have an IDE tape drive, a Seagate STT2A TR-5, which I have
used for backups with FreeBSD 3.4, 4.3, and 4.7. I have a script that
dumps all my partitions, one after the other, and depends on dump -a
to notice end-of-tape and prompt me to switch tapes.
I just moved up to 4.10 -- doing a reinstall, not an update -- and
now dump -a isn't detecting end-of-tape. Instead, dump reports a
write error and there is a console message:

  /kernel: ast0: WRITE - VOLUME OVERFLOW asc=0x00 ascq=0x02 error=0x02

Is this a known problem? What can I do about it? (Aside from hacking
my script to use dump -B and mt rdhpos to work around it, which is
mostly functional but not entirely satisfactory.)
I have tried building a kernel with device atapicam and using
/dev/sa0 instead of /dev/ast0, but for some reason writing to /dev/sa0
doesn't actually write anything to the tape, even though I can probe the
tape and move it around with mt. (But that's another problem, or
perhaps some setup is needed that I haven't figured out yet.)
 Relevant dmesg output:

ast0: TAPE Seagate STT2A at ata1-slave PIO4
sa0 at ata1 bus 0 target 1 lun 0
sa0: Seagate STT2A 8.43 Removable Sequential Access SCSI-2 device
sa0: 16.000MB/s transfers

 I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.
