chkrootkit

2009-01-28 Thread ajtiM
Hi!

My system: new installed FreeBSD 7.1, KDE 3.5.10

I ran chkrootkit and I got:

 ...
Checking `sshd'... /usr/bin/strings: Warning: '/' is not an ordinary file
 ...
 ...
Searching for t0rn's default files and dirs... nothing found
 Searching for t0rn's v8 defaults... Possible t0rn v8 \(or variation\) rootkit
installed...

I ran rkhunter -c also and on the end I have:

 System checks summary
 =

 File properties checks...
 Required commands check failed
 Files checked: 103
 Suspect files: 0

 Rootkit checks...
 Rootkits checked : 77
 Possible rootkits: 0

 Applications checks...
 Applications checked: 4
 Suspect applications: 0

I am confused about chkrootkit and the line:
 Searching for t0rn's v8 defaults... Possible t0rn v8 \(or variation\) rootkit
installed...

 Thanks in advance.

Have you properly updated chrootkit? If so, it appears you have a
rootkit on your system. How old is the installation?

I installed chkrootkit from the ports and I have FreeBSD 7.1 about one week
and just FreeBSD is on computer. Fresh installation and IMO I visited
just safe web pages. I have a desktop computer, cable Internet. I have
Skype installed but I didn't use yet.

I think this post [1] might be relevant from the debian mailing list.

I red and supposed to be libproc.a problem
I don't have experience with the chkrootkit and it is not clear for me where
it found a rootkit: which file, dir...

The link Eitan posted is very clear. It is (most likely) a false alarm.

Thank you very much, Ethan and Glen :). Yes, it is false alarm :).

In BIOS I have Hyper-Threading enabled.

Everything work good but not all the time. If I compile something and than
start KDE it looks okay but everything is slower, specially KMail. It
happened also when I left computer on and next day KDE is slower. If I
disab;e HT in bios than is oaky but performance of the system is not as good
as with HT on.

I use FreeBSD more than year now. I started with 7.0 beta, than 7.0 and I
never had the same problem. On 7.0 I had kernel compiled with ULE and it
works without any problem.

Thanks...

why update...

2010-02-06 Thread ajtiM
...if is doesn't work???

It is not the first time and I think the last too but I have a question
anywhere:

The problem is jpeg 8.0 which need to update many ports. It is not a problem
if works. But if doesn't which is my case that is a problem. As I sent a
previous mails about problem to rebuilt qt33 and arts (not just me) and the
problem became a BIG problem because many other applications don't work. Why
all of this rush for update a port in this case jpeg which IMO is not so
important (BTW Linux world use K3b for KDE 4 more than six months without
problem, we don't) and update for QT33 doen't works??? Is it QT33 less
important as jpeg 8.0. As a user of FreeBSD I expected that when update is in
the port that is safe to use this port. But looks like that I am wrong.
Thanks.

Because the release of this software on FreeBSD does not happen on the same
day as KDE releases it. It has to be patched and ported by people who are
volunteering their free time. These patches are needed to make compiling
and running KDE on FreeBSD a worthwhile experience. This takes time.

A lot of third party apps are not as 100% portable as they could be, and
many contain a lot of 'Linuxisms' which need to be adjusted out.

So do not look at the release dates on the KDE site and think that because
KDE x.y.z is released by KDE on xx somemonth that it will magically appear
in the FreeBSD ports immediately. This stuff has to be patched first.

You would have encountered the problem that you mentioned regardless
of whether you used portupgrade or portmaster, and the results would
have been the same. It was a flaw in the ports tree itself, not in
 the updating tool.

I think that portmaster is probably a better choice for most people,
since it implements most if not all of the features that portupgrade
does, the maintainer is more active, and it doesn't need ruby and bdb
to work, or require extra databases. Mixing portupgrade and
portmaster shouldn't cause any problems, as long as you take care to
keep your portupgrade port and package databases up-to-date, but it
probably isn't necessary to use both.

Whatever you decide, I urge you to take a few minutes to read the
manpage of your updating tool. It can save you a lot of time and
frustration later. Also, if you want to avoid problems, after major
changes to the ports tree, it is safer to wait for a few days before
updating your own ports. Usually there are a few problems that are
uncovered and fixed after major changes are made, and it takes a few
days or a week for this to happen.

 b.

Thank you. I am reading /usr/ports/UPDATING special like now but there are
problems. And I have a problem again with /usr/ports/devel/py-psyco
I get:
c/mergepoints.c:242: error 'JUMP_IF_FALSE' undeclared here

There is not enough context here to learn much, but this is the kind
of error that could occur if this port is built with python 2.7.x. It
may be that your ports tree is still not up-to-date, because this is
one of the few ports that doesn't work with python 2.7.x [The upstream
maintainer was working on a new version (see the port website), but
hasn't finished it yet], so Martin modified the port:

 http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports/devel/py-psyco/Makefile.diff?r1
 =1.17;r2=1.18

Do you have those changes? Is py-psyco using python 2.5.x or 2.6.x
during the build? If not, update your ports tree (and make sure that
it really _is_ up-to-date, by looking at the file afterward, because
some mirrors have been having problems lately), then (for safety)
rebuild whatever version of python (2.5.x or 2.6.x) you are using with
py-psyco, and then try again. If it still doesn't work, post your full
build log to the freebsd-python mailing list.

 b.
Thank you very much for reply but I see that is not possible to build it (I
red about psyco on mailing list).
For now everything works but I have more ports to rebuild but psyco is the big
problem.

Thanks again...

 hi mitja,

i believe your hardware is broken, i would try to get a pci usbcard an
disable the onboard controller, or configure a Generic Kernel and put
the hardisk in an different Computer from your buddy or your second
machine , and check if the problem still exists.

 greets

 daniel

I have on the computer Linux too and I never have a problem.

jpeg-7

2009-07-20 Thread ajtiM
Hi!

My system: FreeBSD 7.2, KDE 3.5.10.

I updated jpeg-7 with portupgrade -fr jpeg-* and looks that evrything works
fine (GIMP, Firefox...) except GQview 2.15 (gqview-devel). It doesn't show
jpg, gif, png or better from 100 pictures it shows one or maybe two. It show
just black square.
Did I forgot to rebuilt something or it is problem with GQview. pleaee?

Thanks in advance...

Did you always use K3B? Have you changed permissions on the device files?
And finally: Are you sure that you are really using a blank DVD-R that is
not defective? I'm asking because I was that clever myself to try to
write to a defective media. :-)

Yes, I use K3b always. I bought 10 DVD-R on Sunday. I did try to different

Okay, this indicates it writed DVD-R. Additionally, it doesn't seem to
be able to write DVD+R. Again, check for the appropriate media.

DVD's which I bought are DVD-R

 Everything else looks completely valid.

Have you tried to use plain growisofs in order to check that it's

Some thoughts. Every time I set up k3b to run under FreeBSD I had to run
it as root or it would not recognize the drive properly. The first thing I
can think of is to make sure that under set - devices your drive is
displayed properly. If not, try running k3b as root. Not an ideal
solution but ti should at least get you going, if that is the problem.

The other problem I have had is that I had to change from
 Writing Mode : Auto
 toWriting Mode: DAO

I don't know why but I would have read / write errors, change the Write
Mode to DAO and then it would work.

I hope this helps, I understand your frustration...

I had this writer at one point. Check the NEC site for supported media. It
doesn't support all writeable DVD layers, especially the low cost ones,
however there are some firmware upgrades that add new media support.

It hasfirmware upgrade but I need Windows. On my computer is just FreeBSD.

Running memtest is a great diagnostic for bad memory.

It's good that it passed; so this suggests thermal problems, or less
likely, a marginal power supply unit which can't handle full load.
prime95 / mprime has a diagnostic mode which lets you fully load up both
CPU and memory resources, and might be better suited to identifying a
problem if memtest didn't find anything

Thank you very much. I will try because I cannot do any update...but I am not

You'll need it in case you're using Linux ABI stuff, and
if I remember correctly, this is required for the Opera
 Flash plugin.

I'm using such a combination here. That's why I have

 # Device Mountpoint FStype Options Dump Pass
 # - -- --- --- -
 linproc /compat/linux/proc linprocfsrw 00

 in /etc/fstab. This requires

   options COMPAT_LINUX
   options LINPROCFS
   options LINSYSFS

in your kernel config, or load the corresponding kernel
 modules. The line

   linux_enable=YES

 in /etc/rc.conf should do that.

Thank you.
But as I nderstand the Opera should be FreeBSD native. I didn't installed
Linux version. And I don't have flash plugin installed either. BTW I use
gnash.

9.0-RC2 is (probably) going to be very similar indeed to the eventual
9.0-RELEASE. There will be some bug fixes yet to go in, but it is
unlikely these will be show-stoppers. RC2 is not unsafe and there's
no reason not to install it for learning or evaluation or development
purposes. I wouldn't advise using it for anything your livelihood
depends on though. Plan on upgrading to -RELEASE as soon as possible if
 you do play with -RC2.

However, you're unlikely to have a pleasant experience if you've got
dodgy RAM in your machine. All bets are off if the computer cannot rely
on getting the correct data back from RAM. I wouldn't even try booting
up a live CD unless the memory problems have been fixed.

   Cheers,

file system on 9.0

2011-11-19 Thread ajtiM
Hi!

One more question before I start installing FreeBSD 9.0 RC-2.
Now we have a new bsdinstall and as I red and if I understood correct there is
also SU journaling file sistem. I will switch to the GPT partion. If I want to
have SU-j file system is it enough that I just choose this option and voila?
And another question is about ports. There is an option ports tree which is
marked default. It is okay that I use this later with portsnap?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. I think so. 'options UFS_GJOURNAL' is present in GENERIC kernel
config. If you use GENERIC kernel, it is there.

And another question is about ports. There is an option ports tree
which is marked default. It is okay that I use this later with portsnap?

Sure. portsnap is designed to work with the ports tree.
Thank you and one more, please...

Partitioning: if I choose guided than I got:
freebsd-boot
freebsd-ufs /
freebsd-swap

If I press enter on freebsd-ufs / than I got options to make moe partitions.
Is it okay that I make /, /var, /tmp and /usr as I have now.

The cleanest solution is to forgo qt/kde, but

   The question remains:

How is a user-started process (e. g. when you run

only root and root-like users (and programs!)
   should be allowed to?

  % mkdir /.config
  mkdir: /.config: Permission denied

As a normal user, you _intendedly_ can't do this.
Why would you assume that a program you start

I don't have any QT/KDE stuff but isn't kdm suid

That could be the reason: kdm, belonging to the
KDE world and quite probably using Qt, running
with the permissions to access /.

You could temporarily try to disable kdm and
replace it by xdm, or no display login manager
at all. In that case, /.config shouldn't appear
 anymore.

I don't know because I don't use kdm and I don't see that kdm running. I have

In .xinitrc I have just:

I think you need to reinstall Opera so it will be linked
against the current version libz.so.6. Maybe you have
left out an important step when upgrading from v8 to v9.
 See /usr/src/Makefile's comment header:

 [...]
  7. `make installworld'
  8. `make delete-old'
  9. `mergemaster'(you may wish to use -i, along with -U or
 -F). 10. `reboot'
 11. `make delete-old-libs' (in case no 3rd party program uses them
 anymore)

Steps 8 and 11 are important here.

In case you've not removed the libs from v8, Opera still

Make sure you have performed the upgrading steps properly
before rebuilding Opera. This is important when rebuilding
installed applications after system upgrade (unless you
have installed the compat8x-i386-x.y.* port and _not_
 installed any further applications).

I didn't update version 8 to 9. I mage new install of FreeBSD 9.0-RC3 and than
I use freebsd-update upgrade to FreeBSD-RELEASE.
I did reinstall Opera two times and it is the same.

I don't know whey LibreeOffice didn't saw that I have libjawt.so?

Thanks.

kernel generic options

2012-01-22 Thread ajtiM
Hi!

My system:
FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE #0: Tue Jan 3 07:15:25 UTC 2012
r...@obrian.cse.buffalo.edu:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386

Because pkg_libchk show that Opera 11.60 misses libz.so.5 I want to install
/misc/compat8x as one user suggested me but generic kernel optins are:

# $FreeBSD: release/9.0.0/sys/i386/conf/GENERIC 227305 2011-11-07 13:40:54Z
marius $
...

options COMPAT_FREEBSD5 # Compatible with FreeBSD5

options COMPAT_FREEBSD6 # Compatible with FreeBSD6

options COMPAT_FREEBSD7 # Compatible with FreeBSD7
'''
'''

O.K. I will rebuild a kernel but my question is why is not options for FreeBSD
8 as default, please?

Thanks.

I did install openjdk6 with portmaster -o and I have two problems still (I did

I'm assuming authors have bumped their ports' revision numbers to force
a rebuild, using the patched openssl lib.

There might be a little of that, but most of the recent activity is
 accounted for by

* Numerous ports moving to the new OPTIONSng framework

* Hundreds of PORTREVISION bumps after an update to graphics/png

* Removal of old koffice ports and the import of the Calligra office
  suite to replace it.

   Cheers,

My system is FreeBSD 9.0 Release and the lst time I use Clang. It works very
good but the lst problem was with Calligra which didn't built.

As I red in /usr/ports/UPDATING I ran portmaster -r png- and there are so many
ports which should be rebuild.
My question is: Is it better (safer) to use gcc or try clang? Or is it better
to not update png?

llvm/clang 3.1

I update the system with pormaster and llvm was updated to 3.1 but clang shows
clang version 3.0 (branches/release_30 142614) 20111021
I installed lang/clang which is 3.1 and I have it in /usr/local/bin:
clang version 3.1 (branches/release_31)
Target: i386-portbld-freebsd9.0

In /etc/make.conf I have:
CC=clang
CXX=clang++
CPP=clang-cpp

Today I try to build with /usr/local/bin/clang which is 3.1 and it works for
graphics/opengtl but it didn't work for multimedia/cuse4bsd-kmod 0.1.24 and
than I change back as I wrote above in make.conf and everythink works and I
rebuilt opengtl whith clang 3.0 and it works.

Is it important just update llvm to 3.1 on FreeBSD 9.0 Rel;ease, please? Do I
need to pkg_delete lang/clang?

I was wanting to ask this question for a long time, but you have
beaten me to it :) I was going to ask specifically if firefox does
depend on libxul that it is necessary? Otherwise, why do we have to
see this every time we update our ports? I have seen that there's a
configuration option for libxul so that it can install, but using
portmaster the option is not the same or not present?

Anyone want to take a shot at explaining this never ending libxul-* saga?

I think Firefox doesn't depend but I installled VLC player and VLC Mozilla

 Hi,

It has been a long time since I tried to install Openoffice from
packages, but I would prefer not to have to build it.

future of the desktop

2011-01-27 Thread ajtiM
Thanks to Solid's new UPower, UDev and UDisks backends, the deprecated HAL is
no longer needed to manage hardware on Linux. Applications do not need to be
updated to make use of these new backends. The HAL backend is still available
for systems that do not support UPower.

It happened with XFCE and now the same story with KDE. Is GNOME next?
How looks like the future of desktop on FreeBSD or is time to install Linux
here?

Thanks in advance.

perl - update

2011-02-02 Thread ajtiM
Hi!

My system: FreeBSD 8.1

I like to update perl to higher version and I don't want to screw up...
I red /usr/ports/UPDATING:

perl-after-upgrade script supplied with lang/perl5.12

If I update to perl 5.12.3 is it enough that I run above script, please?
In /etc/make.conf I have:
# added by use.perl 2010-11-05 17:40:46

PERL_VERSION=5.8.9

I have above from version 8.0. Do I need to change version from 5.8.9 to 5.12
or to 5.12.3?

Thank you very much.

perl update again

2011-02-02 Thread ajtiM
Hi!

Again me with the perl update from 5.8 to 5.12.
I did portmaster -o lang/perl5.12 /lang/perl5.8
and upgrade was without problem.
Than I ran portmaster -r perl-
and there were also for rebuild arts, qt33 which I dont have installed and
portmaster --check-depends doesn't shows any problems.

I went back to version 5.8 because I don't want to install those ports which I
don't have.
Did I do something wrong?

Thanks in advance.

 Probably (though not certainly)
 mount -t msdosfs /dev/da4s1 /mnt

I did what you suggested but it doesn't works:
no such fles or directory.

Your phone might be similar to my HTC Evo. In the phone, I had to go to
Settings - Connect to PC and set 'Default connection type' to 'Disk
drive'. Once I did that, I could mount the phone in the same manner as a
 thumb drive.

 According to your dmesg output

 da4 at umass-sim1 bus 1 scbus3 target 0 lun 0
da4: HTC Android Phone 0100 Removable Direct Access SCSI-2 device
 da4: 4 MB/s transfers

the da4 device is the correct one. Check which access files
 are created:

   # ls -l /dev/da4*

You can check the partitioning of the da4 device with

   # fdisk da4

which should show you what kind of partitions are available
to access, and what type they are of. If you see a FAT
partition, it will probably be /dev/da4s1, so (including
 security means, just for testing):

   # mount -t msdosfs -o ro /dev/da4s1 /mnt

should mount it read-only. You can also use a per-filsystem
 identification using

   # file - /dev/da4s1

for proper identification (at least this works with partitions
containing UFS filesystems, no idea about FAT stuff).

Check dmesg output in parallel to see if the Android didn't
cut the wire due to a timeout.

Take one step after another: First identify what is available,
then identify it, and finally mount it for testing. If it all
works, make a permanent option (e. g. in /etc/fstab) for it
 if you want.

fdisk da4
*** Working on device /dev/da4 ***

parameters to be used for BIOS calculations are:

Media sector size is 512
Warning: BIOS sector numbering starts with sector 1
Information from DOS bootblock is:

I don't know how tou mount. I like to reach a memory card for upload mp3 from
computer.

Thank.

On my Optimus S, you must force GEOM to retaste the media after making the
SD card available to mount via the android interface, eg:

 true /dev/da4

Thank you very much. Now I can mount it.
