why update...
...if is doesn't work??? It is not the first time and I think the last too but I have a question anywhere: The problem is jpeg 8.0 which need to update many ports. It is not a problem if works. But if doesn't which is my case that is a problem. As I sent a previous mails about problem to rebuilt qt33 and arts (not just me) and the problem became a BIG problem because many other applications don't work. Why all of this rush for update a port in this case jpeg which IMO is not so important (BTW Linux world use K3b for KDE 4 more than six months without problem, we don't) and update for QT33 doen't works??? Is it QT33 less important as jpeg 8.0. As a user of FreeBSD I expected that when update is in the port that is safe to use this port. But looks like that I am wrong. Thanks. The version 4.4 was out in February 9th! Because the release of this software on FreeBSD does not happen on the same day as KDE releases it. It has to be patched and ported by people who are volunteering their free time. These patches are needed to make compiling and running KDE on FreeBSD a worthwhile experience. This takes time. A lot of third party apps are not as 100% portable as they could be, and many contain a lot of 'Linuxisms' which need to be adjusted out. So do not look at the release dates on the KDE site and think that because KDE x.y.z is released by KDE on xx somemonth that it will magically appear in the FreeBSD ports immediately. This stuff has to be patched first. -Mike ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org I understand it but advertisement was not on KDE site but on the FreeBSD KDE site. I think I will wait to FreeBSD 9 and than install evrything from scratch. You would have encountered the problem that you mentioned regardless of whether you used portupgrade or portmaster, and the results would have been the same. It was a flaw in the ports tree itself, not in the updating tool. I think that portmaster is probably a better choice for most people, since it implements most if not all of the features that portupgrade does, the maintainer is more active, and it doesn't need ruby and bdb to work, or require extra databases. Mixing portupgrade and portmaster shouldn't cause any problems, as long as you take care to keep your portupgrade port and package databases up-to-date, but it probably isn't necessary to use both. Whatever you decide, I urge you to take a few minutes to read the manpage of your updating tool. It can save you a lot of time and frustration later. Also, if you want to avoid problems, after major changes to the ports tree, it is safer to wait for a few days before updating your own ports. Usually there are a few problems that are uncovered and fixed after major changes are made, and it takes a few days or a week for this to happen. b. Thank you. It may be that your ports tree is still not up-to-date, because this is one of the few ports that doesn't work with python 2.7.x [The upstream maintainer was working on a new version (see the port website), but hasn't finished it yet], so Martin modified the port: http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports/devel/py-psyco/Makefile.diff?r1 =1.17;r2=1.18 Do you have those changes? Is py-psyco using python 2.5.x or 2.6.x during the build? If not, update your ports tree (and make sure that it really _is_ up-to-date, by looking at the file afterward, because some mirrors have been having problems lately), then (for safety) rebuild whatever version of python (2.5.x or 2.6.x) you are using with py-psyco, and then try again. If it still doesn't work, post your full build log to the freebsd-python mailing list. b. Thank you very much for reply but I see that is not possible to build it (I red about psyco on mailing list). Running memtest is a great diagnostic for bad memory. It's good that it passed; so this suggests thermal problems, or less likely, a marginal power supply unit which can't handle full load. prime95 / mprime has a diagnostic mode which lets you fully load up both CPU and memory resources, and might be better suited to identifying a problem if memtest didn't find anything Regards, Thank you very much. You'll need it in case you're using Linux ABI stuff, and if I remember correctly, this is required for the Opera Flash plugin. I'm using such a combination here. That's why I have # Device Mountpoint FStype Options Dump Pass # - -- --- --- - linproc /compat/linux/proc linprocfsrw 00 in /etc/fstab. This requires options COMPAT_LINUX options LINPROCFS options LINSYSFS in your kernel config, or load the corresponding kernel modules. The line linux_enable=YES in /etc/rc.conf should do that. There will be some bug fixes yet to go in, but it is unlikely these will be show-stoppers. RC2 is not unsafe and there's no reason not to install it for learning or evaluation or development purposes. I wouldn't advise using it for anything your livelihood depends on though. Plan on upgrading to -RELEASE as soon as possible if you do play with -RC2. However, you're unlikely to have a pleasant experience if you've got dodgy RAM in your machine. All bets are off if the computer cannot rely on getting the correct data back from RAM. I wouldn't even try booting up a live CD unless the memory problems have been fixed. Otherwise, why do we have to see this every time we update our ports? I have seen that there's a configuration option for libxul so that it can install, but using portmaster the option is not the same or not present? Anyone want to take a shot at explaining this never ending libxul-* saga? Regards, Antonio I think Firefox doesn't depend but I installled VLC player and VLC Mozilla plugins needs libxul. I used beforeMplayer and Gecko plgins which need libxul too and because that I switched to VLC because I thought that I am free of libxul but no. future of the desktop
Thanks to Solid's new UPower, UDev and UDisks backends, the deprecated HAL is no longer needed to manage hardware on Linux. Applications do not need to be updated to make use of these new backends. The HAL backend is still available for systems that do not support UPower. It happened with XFCE and now the same story with KDE. Is GNOME next? How looks like the future of desktop on FreeBSD or is time to install Linux here? Thanks in advance. According to your dmesg output da4 at umass-sim1 bus 1 scbus3 target 0 lun 0 da4: HTC Android Phone 0100 Removable Direct Access SCSI-2 device da4: 4 MB/s transfers the da4 device is the correct one. Check which access files are created: # ls -l /dev/da4* You can check the partitioning of the da4 device with # fdisk da4 which should show you what kind of partitions are available to access, and what type they are of. If you see a FAT partition, it will probably be /dev/da4s1, so (including security means, just for testing): # mount -t msdosfs -o ro /dev/da4s1 /mnt should mount it read-only. You can also use a per-filsystem identification using # file - /dev/da4s1 for proper identification (at least this works with partitions containing UFS filesystems, no idea about FAT stuff). Check dmesg output in parallel to see if the Android didn't cut the wire due to a timeout. Take one step after another: First identify what is available, then identify it, and finally mount it for testing. If it all works, make a permanent option (e. g. in /etc/fstab) for it if you want. fdisk da4 *** Working on device /dev/da4 *** parameters extracted from in-core disklabel are: cylinders=967 heads=255 sectors/track=63 (16065 blks/cyl) parameters to be used for BIOS calculations are: cylinders=967 heads=255 sectors/track=63 (16065 blks/cyl) Media sector size is 512 Warning: BIOS sector numbering starts with sector 1 Information from DOS bootblock is: The data for partition 1 is: sysid 11 (0x0b),(DOS or Windows 95 with 32 bit FAT) start 8192, size 15536128 (7586 Meg), flag 0 beg: cyl 0/ head 130/ sector 3; end: cyl 967/ head 150/ sector 15 The data for partition 2 is: UNUSED The data for partition 3 is: UNUSED The data for partition 4 is: UNUSED I don't know how tou mount.
