Freebsd without swap?
Hi, I lost a hard drive in one of my machines here. Fortunately, the only thing on it was /tmp and a random storage partition I used as a dropoff point for backups before they get ftp'd to another machine. And...my swap partition. So how dangerously am I living to run this machine without any swap until I get my hands on a replacement drive? Frankly, it doesn't eat into the swap much at all on regular basis. Thanks for the help. Drew ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

7.0RC1 - more panics, hardware?
Ok guys, frustrating one here. I installed 7.0RC1 on the system that I've been trying to make into my new server (it's a home thing, natd, email, apache, mysql, firewall, you know, fun stuff) and it has now failed catastrophically twice. The first time I was convinced it was the hard drive. This time though, I'm not. All of this hardware *tests* ok, that means memtest, seatools, etc find no problems with the hardware. But this hardware has been around for a while. What I'm looking for is an opinion - I watch the lists, and I've seen a few other page faults and trap 12's etc, but it looks like as a whole, people have having pretty good luck with 7.0RC1. Is there certain hardware I should look out for with 7.0, for instance, I have a nic using the re driver - is that ok? I know I can panic my desktop (6.2) using the nve card in it. One thing I have to point out is, I've had strange things come up on the console with this machine - USB errors for instance. And there is absolutely nothing USB hooked up to this machine, although it does have USB hardware. Bottom line: Do I keep exactly the same hardware, and try 6.3? Do just get new hardware (hey, lets face it, hardware is cheap, especially when all I need is a box to sit there and run with two nic's in it, a console output and a cd drive). Is there anything in particular anyone would like me to try with this system before I take it out back and shoot it? (seriously, current state:) The server boots, and miraculously enough, it routes internet traffic to the rest of my network. However, it's hosed it's file system but good, which is what it did last time too - trying to log into the console results in: /usr/bin/login: No such file or directory. I've booted in single user mode and fsck'd it. I'm certain that at most, it's hanging on by a thread. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

STABLE + KEXI 1.1.2 (koffice 1.6.2) + KDE 3.5.6 = no sql?
Hello, I am using Kexi to track various things in my office, including time off. This works well because I can write queries for each employee showing me how much time they have requested off, etc. - however it appears that after a recent upgrade of all ports, which included a KDE update, SQL no longer works. For instance, I have a table called time_off that has many records in it, but even a simple query such as SELECT * FROM time_off; yields an empty result. Does anyone have any pointers on what it might take to get this working again? I have about 30 saved queries, none of them work any more. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Inventory (asset) tracking software?
Hello, I'm tapping into this vast group of knowledgeable people to see if someone out there has a solution to a problem I've been trying to tackle for a couple of weeks now. I need a way to track inventory, but not in a traditional way. We aren't selling anything, rather, all of this stays internal. We have a data center which is constantly expanding in terms of capacity. We have large amounts of hardware on site, and new hardware arriving all the time. We currently have no good way to track things such as what hard drive that came in is in what server, and if we had to replace one, what the RMA date is on it, and which one we replaced it with. I would like something capable of the following: 1) We can add in new inventory as it arrives. 2) We can indicate what server the parts go into, and also look at the server and see what parts are in it. 3) Tasks can be added to the system requesting a new server be built and what parts should be in the server (single cpu, dual, 2 drives, 5 drives, raid controler, X sticks of Y size ram, etc) that will take current inventory into account. 4) Track inventory on hand (obviously). 5) Track RMA's on items. Things it would be nice to have: 1) The ability to work with some form of bar code scanner. 2) The ability to print serial number stickers to add to hardware for internal tracking. 3) Lifetime maintenance records - what parts have gone into or come out of a machine over it's service life. 4) Mark an inventory item or server object as tested/burned in. I would like to find something open source, it can run either on as a desktop application, or a web application. If there's something out there that does this that isn't open source, that's fine too. Don't not recommend something just because it's expensive - I'm all about supporting open source projects, but the company is footing the bill, and they just want something that works. My research has turned up a few commercial packages that do parts of this, but not all of it, and nothing really integrates, so I haven't found a real solution, but I can't imagine that this doesn't exist. There were no changes made of the system, except that part of the filesystem was exported as an NFS share. These shares are setup on another FreeBSD machine for automount. I have checked my /etc and /var/logs and cannot find any reason for the mails to have stopped. Any help and guidance will be greatly appreciated. Here are some of the relevant files: Have you inadvertently aliased the root user to another user? Or perhaps you deleted an alias and should be looking in the "root" mailbox? I have virtual mail setup on my systems and I lost periodic emails as well until I configured postfix correctly to consider my local machine's hostname as an acceptable recipient. I now alias root to the virtual user I want to receive these emails. I had this same thing happen recently on one of my machines, but it was one I use for my desktop. They stopped for me when I installed KDE, upgrading from enlightenment. I don't know if there's something going on with a particular update or not, but honestly, the mails don't even appear to be getting generated, which is to say, I don't know if the job is even being run. Can you determine if the job is being run for you or not? ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
Re: Bug in 6.1 acpi?
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: (Please respond directly, as I am not subscribed) I've asked about this error message before, but this has gotten serious. Not sure if it's related, but this server keeps spontaneously having what appear to be power events every 13-40 hours or so. No errors or panic messages or core dumps. The system has dual power supplies and was rock stable running 4.X. The problem only started occuring after upgrading to 6.1-STABLE. Could it be related to this DMESG? : acpi0: on motherboard acpi0: Power Button (fixed) acpi: bad write to port 0x070 (8), val 0x43 acpi: bad read from port 0x071 (8) The hardware is an Intel L440GX+ MB with dual 1Ghz CPUs with SMP (I tried a kernel without SMP, but it didn't help), 1GB ECC RAM, 1GB Swap, Adaptec 2100 SCSI RAID level 1. It apppears to be lightly loaded in terms of CPU and RAM. This server is in production, so any advice would be greatly apppreciated. James, When you say power events, what exactly are we talking about here? Does the system just shut down, does it power down cleanly, or is it spontaneously rebooting? ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
